# Worship Study ## Background - Started - 2016.09.19 ## Questions - What is worship? - What are the methods of worship? - Does physical position matter? - How are healing and worship connected? - Is there a connection between “worshipai” and “glorifying God”? - Is there any connection between “honoring” God and “worshiping” Him? - Compare with [[Praise_God_Bible_Study|Praise Bible Study]] and [[Respect_Honor_Glorify_Gods_Name_Study]]. - What is the difference between worship and: - Praising God - Respect, honor glory / glorifying God - Is obedience worship? - How is music used in worship and or praise? - Is singing a song worship and / or praise? - Compare the types of “worship” in kissing the ground ([[G4352]]) and “service ([[G2999]]) & [[G3000]]) - WRT worship how does [[Genesis_22|Genesis 22.2 & 5]] (Abraham sacrificing his son) compare with [[John_03|John 3.16]]? --- ## ToDo - Add the following section to the TakeAways and change the section title to "TL;DR": - ### Location Summary - NOTE: Although the modern Main Stream Religion (MSR) church implies via signage and verbiage that there is a designated place and time for worship, scripture seems to have a different view. Below is a summary of the various locations where people "worshiped" God. ### Method Summary - Bowing seems to be the most common form / method mentioned - Add references from the NWLV - Done through 1 Chronicles 29.20 - Next: 2 Chronicles 7 - Look at [[H7812]], [[H8416]], [[H7318]] - Evaluate / reevaluate - 2 Chronicles 29.28 - Psalm 51.16-17 - Psalm 95.6 - Psalm 96.9 - Isaiah 29.13 - Amos 5.21-24 - Matthew 6.5-6 - Matthew 15.9 - Luke 4.8 - Luke 18.9-14 - John 14.15 - Acts 16.14 - Acts 17.23 - Romans 1.25 - Romans 12.1-2 - 1 Corinthians 2.16 - 1 Corinthians 10.31 - 1 Corinthians 14.25 - Hebrews 11.21 - Hebrews 12.28 - Revelation 19.10 - Done - 2 Samuel 6.5 - 2 Chronicles 29.27-35 - Psalm 22.22 - Psalm 35.18 - John 4.23-24 --- ## TL;DR - 2025.04.11 - One of the main things that came out of this study was the [[NWLV|New Worship Leader Version]] and intro that I wrote [[NWLV_Overview|NWLV Overview]] - 2023.08.20 - My current thinking based on **1 Corinthians 10.31**, **Romans 1.25**, **Matthew 22.37-40**, **Acts 10.25** and many others: - Worshiping God is all about a love relationship with Him. More specifically: - It doesn't matter what we do, if our hearts are in the right place with God, then it is possible to "worship" God thorough that activity - On the other hand, if our hearts are not in the right place, there is NO activity that worships God - As we have visited church buildings across the US, we have seen many signs pointing toward the "sanctuary" but labeled something like "worship center". Sadly, this implies the designated room is the only place to worship God. I don't doubt the possibility there are some parishioners who do in fact worship God in the designated room. However, it also possible there are many in attendance who's hearts are not right with God and therefore are NOT worshiping God; no matter what "worshipful" activity they engage - Honor & Worship - Not sure “honor” and “worship” are the same. (See my observations at [[Matthew_15|Matthew 15.7-9]] [[Mark_07|Mark 7.6-7]] and [[John_05|John 5.22-23]]). - Jesus “honored” His Father. However, I think this is different than “worship” ([[John_08|John 8.49]]). - ?????? Many of the “honor” (nahah-[[H5091]]) have to do with honoring father or king or used in a negative context. (There are only three occurrences) - Bowing & Worship - Clearly, there is some sort of connection between “worship” and bowing ([[H7812]]) & kissing-the-ground ([[G4352]]) - Clearly, there is some mixing and matching between bowing down, worshiping and serving. See [[Deuteronomy_05|Deuteronomy 5.9]] - There are 82 occurrences of “worship(ed), (er)” in the BSB - [[G2999]] - 3 of 5 in NASB - [[G3000]] - 3 of 21 in NASB - [[G4352]] - 53 of 60 in NASB - Based on word count, [[John_04|John 4.20-24]] (10-occurrences) is Jesus’ primary teaching on worship. - There is a strong connection between “serving” God and “worshiping” Him {[[Deuteronomy_05|Deuteronomy 5.9]], [[Deuteronomy_06|Deuteronomy 6.13]], [[Luke_04|Luke 4.8]], [[Romans_12|Romans 12.1]], [[Revelation_22|Revelation 22.3]]}. This include bad worship {[[John_16|John 16.2]], [[Romans_01|Romans 1.25]]} - “Bless” in English means, among other things: to extol as holy; glorify - It is possible to worship anything. All of our worship activities should be about the creator. ([[Romans_01|Romans 1.25]]) - We are to worship God in Spirit and truth ([[Psalm_145|Psalm 145.18]], [[John_04|John 4.24]], [[Romans_01|Romans 1.25]] & [[Ephesians_06|Ephesians 6.14]]) - See the Worship Training I did for Timothy Church on 2016.10.04 for more takeaways. - We cannot offer our bodies to God in worship without faith that comes from God. Therefore, we can't worship God unless God enables us{ [[Romans_12|Romans 12.1]]} | AREA OF INTEREST | PRAISE | WORSHIP | | ---------------- | ------ | ------- | | Circumstances | | | | Method | [[H7812]] | | | Purpose | | | --- ## Notes --- ### Genesis 18 - (2) --- ### Genesis 19 - (1) --- - [[Genesis_22|Genesis 22]] - 2016.09.25 - Context - Abraham offering Isaac [1-19] - Abraham connected sacrificing his son with worshiping {[[H7812]]} God [2 & 5] --- ### Genesis 23 - (7, 12) --- - [[Genesis_24|Genesis 24]] - Date - {26, 48, 52} --- ### Genesis 27 - (29) --- ### Genesis 33 - (3, 6-7) --- ### Genesis 37 - (7, 9-10) --- ### Genesis 43 - (26, 28) --- ### Genesis 47 - (31) --- ### Genesis 48 - (12) --- ## Genesis 49 - (8) --- - [[Exodus_04|Exodus 4]] - Date - (31) --- ### Exodus 11 - (8) --- ### Exodus 12 - 27 --- - [[Exodus_15|Exodus 15]] - Date - Moses and the Israelites sang a song to the Lord [1] - Miriam sang to the Lord [21] --- ### Exodus 18 - (7) --- ### Exodus 20 - (5) --- ### Exodus 23 - (24) --- ### Exodus 24 - (1) --- ### Exodus 32 - (8) --- ### Exodus 33 - (10) --- ### Exodus 34 - (8, 14) --- ### Leviticus 26 - (1) --- - [[Numbers_21|Numbers 21]] - Date - Israel sang a song {17} --- ### Numbers 22 - (31) --- ### Numbers 25 - (1-2) --- ### Deuteronomy 4 - (19) --- ### Deuteronomy 5 - (8, 10) - 2016.09.25 - In this verse, there seems to be a difference between “bowing down [[H7812]]” and “worshiping [[H5647]]” [9] - Most translations have the first phrase ([[H7812]]) as ”bow down”.  However, NASB, NET and GWT have “worship” [9] - Some translations such as NIV, NLT, BSB, HCSB have the second phrase ([[H5647]]) as “worship”.  However, ESV, NASB, KJV, NET and GWT translate it as “serve” [9] --- - [[Deuteronomy_06|Deuteronomy 6]] - 2016.09.25 ^35198c - Most of the translations say “serve” However, NASB and HCSB say “worship” {13} - Of the 289 occurrences of [[H5647]], NASB translates it “worship” seven times and “worshipers” six times --- ### Deuteronomy 8 - (19-20) --- ### Deuteronomy 11 - (16-17) --- ### Deuteronomy 17 - (2-4a) --- ### Deuteronomy 26 - (10b) --- ### Deuteronomy 29 - (26) --- ### Deuteronomy 30 - (17-18) --- - [[Deuteronomy_31|Deuteronomy 31]] - Date - A song was to serve as a witness against the Israelites [19-21] --- ### Joshua 5 - (14) --- - [[Joshua_23|Joshua 23]] - Date - (7, 16) --- ### Judges 2 - (12, 17, 19) --- - [[Judges_05|Judges 5]] - Date - Deborah's song [1-12] - Is her song praise, worship or what? --- - [[Judges_07|Judges 7]] - Date - {15} --- ### Ruth 2 - (10) --- ### 1 Samuel 1 - (19, 28) --- ### 1 Samuel 2 - (28, 36) --- - [[1 Samuel_15|1 Samuel 15]] - Date - {25-31} --- - [[1_Samuel_18|1 Samuel 18]] - Date - The women from all the cities came out singing and dancing [6] --- ### 1 Samuel 20 - (41) --- ### 1 Samuel 24 - (8-9) --- ### 1 Samuel 25 - (23, 41) --- ### 1 Samuel 28 - (14) --- ### 2 Samuel 1 - (2) --- - [[2_Samuel_06|2 Samuel 6]] - 2023.08.22 - David and all Israel energetically celebrated before the Lord {5} - It could be said that they worshiping. However, {5} - I don't think that "danced with all his might before the LORD" in and of itself constitutes "worship" - On the other hand, if David and the others had the right heart attitude, in other words, it was all about celebrating God for who He is, then their actions would be considered worship - I don't think there is anything in scripture to imply that it is necessary to dance or sing in order to worship. More specifically: - It doesn't matter what we do, if our hearts are in the right place with God, then it is possible to "worship" God thorough that activity - On the other hand, if our hearts are not in the right place, there is NO activity that worships God - Based on the story {8-20} - I am guessing, the hearts and minds of the angels and shepherds were focused on worshiping God, therefore: - I think in this example the angels and shepherds were in fact worshiping God - 2019.05.14 - I don't think the angels were "worshiping" God.  It says they were "praising" ([[G0134]]) God.  It is possible that there are other verses elsewhere that talk about angels "worshiping" God, but this isn't one of them. [13] - Same logic from above applies to the shepherds [20] - 2016.09.21 - It would seem that the angels were worshiping God through praise.
