# War Bible Study
## Background
### 2026.04.25
- I decided to merge the "'End-Times Wars Study" (ETWS) into this one. I've creates another section in the tl;dr to summarize war related activity in the [[End-Times|end-times]]
- #### ETWS Background
##### 2024.09.09
- Generally, this study is focused on two things:
- Physical as opposed to spiritual warfare
- Wars, battles, conflicts, etc that will occur in the end-times
##### 2024.05.02
- While transferring the War Study, it occurred to me to create a doc outlining the wars, battles & conflicts that will occur related to the end-times.
### 2024.04.29

## tl;dr
- Who is the enemy?
- Satan / Devil (Mark 4.15, James 4.7)
- Satan is God’s enemy [Romans 16.20]
- We are in a battle against Satan that started in **Genesis 3**. {Ephesians 6.11-12}
- How should we treat our enemies?
- Love them [Matthew 5.44]
- Slay / slaughter the enemies of Jesus [Luke 19.27]
- There is something to taking a stand / standing / standing firm / standing our ground and "be still"
- When the Egyptians were pursuing the Israelites, Moses told the people to:
- "stand firm" (Exodus 14.13)
- "be still" (Exodus 14.14)
- Goliath took his stand before the Israelites for 40 days [1 Samuel 17.16]
- Satan presented himself before God [Job 1.6 and 2.1]
- We are commanded to Stand / stand firm / stand our ground [Ephesians 6.11, 13]
- Should we have a wartime instead of a peacetime mentality?
- This passage talks about “rest”. It could be used to justify a peacetime mentality. [Matthew 11.28-29]
- In peacetime, the church Increased in numbers/Grew in numbers/Multiplied/Continued to increase [Acts 9.31]
- The Greek word "topos" ([[G5117]]) can refer to a physical place or a stronghold
- Most verses simply refer to a physical place
- Some verses actually refer to holy places such as: John 20.7, Acts 7.33, 49, Acts 21,28, Romans 12.19, 1 Timothy 2.8, Revelation 12.6, 8, 14
- Some verses could be strongholds such as: Matthew 12.43, Matthew 24.7, Matthew 24.15, Matthew 27.33 (x2), Mark 6.11, Mark 13.8, Mark 15.22 (x2), Luke 11.24, Luke 21.11, John 19.13, 17, 20, 2 Peter 1.19, Revelation 16.16, Revelation 18.17
- Jesus as a pacifist
- The Lord of Armies: (Psalm 46.8-11)
- Makes wars cease
- Breaks the bow and shatters the spear
- Burns the chariots with fire
- Jesus did not go on the offensive against Satan. He took a defensive posture. {Matthew 4.4, 7, 10}
- Jesus said: {Matthew 5.5, 7, 9, 39, 44}
- Not to resist an evil person [39]
- Love our enemies [44]
- Pray for those who persecute you
- Blessed are the meek [5]
- Blessed are the merciful [7]
- Blessed are the peacemakers [9]
- After Peter cut off the servant's ear, Jesus said to him, "no more of this" [Luke 22.51]
- Jesus as a warrior
- There is every reason to believe that the man who appeared in front of Joshua is / was Jesus. Assuming that is true, then Jesus is the commander of the Lord’s army. [Joshua 5.13-15] Two observations to solidify this theory:
- Joshua fell face down and worship and the man did not correct him like the angel did in other situations
- The man told Joshua to take off his shoes because he was standing on holy ground
- Jesus used scripture to defend against Satan. [Matthew 4.4, 7, 10]
- I have come to bring a sword {Matthew 10.34}
- Jesus won these battles, but the war was not over yet [Luke 4.13]
- Mark implies that Jesus was doing battle for the whole 40 days. Luke clearly states that He was being tempted the whole 40 days. Matthew says Satan came to Him after fasting for 40 days. [Luke 4.2]
- Jesus did battle against Satan and set the woman free. He did it by stating that she is free and laying His hands on her. [Luke 13.12]
- Contrary to other teachings of Jesus, here He instructs those around Him to slay / slaughter His enemies [Luke 19.27]
- What is the difference between these “enemies” and those Jesus talks about in Matthew 5.44? [Luke 19.27]
- The cloak was a very valuable item. So, for Jesus to tell them to sell their cloaks and buy swords, that was a significant financial statement {Luke 22.35-36}
- When the disciples responded by saying that they had two sword, Jesus said "That is enough". I am guessing that either two were sufficient, or that was enough talk about swords. {Luke 22.35-36}
- Everyone, rich, poor, free, or slave will try to hide from the wrath of the Lamb and God {Revelation 6.15-17}
- The Lamb will triumph {Revelation 17.14}
- Jesus is the Commander of the armies of heaven and wages war {Revelation 19.11-16}
- God as a warrior
- The Lord's army was part of the 7-day creation [Genesis 2.1, Isaiah 45.11-13]
- God will fight the Israelite's battles [Exodus 14.13-14]
- Moses gave God the glory saying that He is a warrior [Exodus 15.3]
- God said that He was summoning His warriors to execute His wrath [Isaiah 13.3]
- The oracle says every man’s heart will melt. So, I am not sure the “army” is made up of “men” [Isaiah 13.7]
- God commanded that the strongholds of Canaan be destroyed [Isaiah 23.11]
- As Joel described the “Day of the Lord”, he used the imagery of an army of locust to describe the army of God [Joel 2.1-11]
- It is God who will do the crushing. [Romans 16.20]
- God's commands to the Israelites about warfare
- The Israelites were to drive out all the inhabitants of the promised land [Numbers 33.50-56]
- What is our role?
- We are to acknowledge that God is our King and He is the one that fights our battles [1 Samuel 8.19-20]
- Don't be afraid [Exodus 14.13, Joshua 1.9, 1 Samuel 17.11]
- Be strong and courageous [Joshua 1.6, 7, 9]
- Rely on God. Asa defeated an army in verse 8 because he trusted in God. However, he failed to rely on God in verse 7 and therefore failed to defeat the Syrian king’s army. [2 Chronicles 16.7-8]
- After David (a man after God's own heart) talks about how God knows everything and it is impossible to escape Him, he adds a paragraph that seems out of place with the rest of the psalm. He says:
- God, I want you to slay the wicked
- Go away from me, you bloodthirsty men, who speak deceitfully of God
- God, Your enemies take Your name in vain
- God, I hate those who hate you
- God, I detest those who rise against You
- hate them with perfect hatred
- I count them as my enemies
- There is something to taking a stand / standing / standing firm / standing our ground
- Goliath took his stand before the Israelites for 40 days [1 Samuel 17.16]
- Satan presented himself before God [Job 1.6 and 2.1]
- We are commanded to Stand / stand firm / stand our ground [Ephesians 6.11, 13]
- Moses told the Israelites to stand firm as the Egyptians threaten them prior to crossing the red sea [Exodus 14.13-14]
- Compare Exodus 14.13-14 with Ephesians 6.11, 13]
- When we pray, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” that is about the most offensive (as opposed to defensive) thing I have found so far. However, it is really a prayer asking God to do His thing and for Him to be offensive. [Matthew 6.9-10]
- We have to persevere to the end. [Matthew 24.13]
- We will be persecuted, killed and hated by all nations as well as one another [Matthew 24.9-10]
- I'm not sure about the meaning of "all who draw the sword will die by the sword" Obviously, there have been countless people, especially the military, over the years who have killed someone and die of natural causes. [Matthew 26.52]
- Unlike the Matthew or Luke versions, there is no mention of healing the servant's ear or a rebuke to Peter for drawing his sword. [Mark 14.43-52]
- We should use Jesus' example in our own Personal warfare [Luke 4.1-13]
- I am guessing that the reason for Jesus' teaching at the sermon on the mount was to prepare us for the world's hatred toward Christians. He wants us to respond differently to that hate than the rest of the world responds. I'm not sure we should extend that teaching to national protection (military) or even personal protection when threatened with bodily harm. [John 15.18-19]
- There is no criticism of Peter for hurting the servant, only for attempting to defend Jesus [John 18.11]
- We are to put on the full armor of God which includes: [Ephesians 6.13-17]
- Belt of truth
- Breastplate of righteousness
- Feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace
- Shield of faith
- Helmet of salvation
- Sword of the Spirit
- Arguably, the two "offensive weapons" we have to wield are the "sword of the Spirit" and prayer. [Ephesians 6.15, 18]
- Other
- God not only brings prosperity but also creates calamity [Isaiah 45.7]
- Persecution caused a scattering of those in the church. This helped to fulfill the command in Acts 1.8. "If you don't do Acts 1.8, God will cause Acts 8.1" [Acts 8.1]
### End-Times Wars
- For now, we are experiencing the [[Braxton_Hicks]] phase {Matthew 24.8}
- We are not to be alarmed despite the coming ugliness as we approach Jesus' return {Matthew 24.6}
- Regardless when "the day of evil" comes Paul makes it clear we need to be prepared and gives us the preparation plan; putting on and keeping on the full armor of God! {Ephesians 6.13-18}

- Continue with verse 17
2018.11.15
- The three oldest sons of Jesse followed Saul to the war [13]
- For 40-days, Goliath took his stand. **Ephesians 6** says several times that we are to stand our ground. This is the same Hebrew word that is used when Satan presented himself before God in **Job 1.6 and 2.1**. [16]
2018.11.13
- The Philistines gathered their forces for War and Saul assembled the men of Israel. [1-2]
- The Philistines had a “champion” named Goliath who was physically imposing (about 9 feet 9 inches) [4]
- Goliath had imposing armor and weapons
- Bronze helmet [5]
- Bronze coat of mail weighing 125 pounds [5]
- Armor of bronze on his legs [6]
- Bronze javelin with an iron point weighing 15 pounds [7]
- It is interesting that Goliath’s shield bearer went BEFORE him [7]
- Goliath challenged Saul and his men to fight with him one on one. He went on to say, “I defy the ranks of Israel … “ [8-10]
- Saul and his men were “dismayed and greatly afraid” [11]
- I wonder why Saul and his men “complied” with Goliath’s terms. They could have come up with a plan to attack him as a team or done what David did, or something else. [8-11]

- Asa defeated an army in verse 8 because he trusted in God. However, he failed to rely on God in verse 7 and therefore failed to defeat the Syrian king’s army. {7-8}
- Although not directly connected with army stuff, verse 9 is often quoted as motivation to obey God. {9}
- What is interesting is that **2 Chronicles 15.17** says that Asa’s heart was blameless all his days. That seems to contradict **2 Chronicles 16.9**. {9}
- Because Asa's heart wasn't fully devoted to God, Hanani told him that he would be at war from then on {9}

### Matthew 6
2018.11.23
- As we pray for churches and plant crosses, we need to be careful to keep it “private” and not visibly grandiose. [5-6]
- We should be using “Lord’s Prayer” or as I like to call it, the “Disciple’s Prayer” (Jesus taught the disciples to pray like that) as we plant the crosses. [9-13]
- When we pray, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” that is about the most offensive (as opposed to defensive) thing I have found so far. However, it is really a prayer asking God to do His thing and for Him to be offensive. [9-10]

### Ephesians 6
#### 2024.05.03
- I assume most people do NOT associate the "Armor of God" section with the [[End-Times|end-times]]. However, I do think there is a possibility. The main reasons I am including it in this study are several fold:
- Paul commands the Ephesians (and I would assume all Christians) to be "strong in the Lord and in His might power" (10)
- Paul's command to "put on the full armor of God" ... so that ... "you can make your stand (11a)
- Paul identified & characterized our enemy today and in the end-times: "the devil & his schemes" (11b)
- Paul then eliminated one description and added others to his list describing our enemy to include other entities: (12)
- not against
- [[flesh]] ([[G4561]]) and [[blood]] ([[G0129]])
- but against
- the [[rule|rulers]]
- the [[Authority|authorities]]
- the [[power|powers]] of this dark [[world]] ([[NIG]])
- the [[spiritual| spiritual forces]] ([[G4153]]) of [[evil]] in the heavenly realms
- Paul used the Greek word "palé" ([[G3823]]) to describe the conflict between us Christians and the enemy described above. The BSB translators chose to translate "palé" into "struggle" (12)
- I think a case could be made that this section is really about:
- [[stand|make your stand]] ([[G2476]]) (11)
- [[stand|stand your ground]] ([[G0436]]) (13)
- [[stand|to stand]] ([[G2476]]) (13)
- [[stand|stand firm]] ([[G2476]]) (14)
- So what does this have to do with the end-times!
- In the next paragraph, Paul starts off by implying that we need to be prepared "so that when the [[day]] ([[G2250]]) of evil comes, you will be able to stand your ground" (13)
- When or what is "the day of evil?" (13)
- Although there is no context in this section to answer that question, there are other places in the Bible that refer to "the day" as Jesus' return / the ultimate end. So "the day of evil" could refer to an end-times situation.
- It is also possible that "the day of evil" refers to the struggles & temptations we face daily. (13)
#### tl:dr
- Regardless when "the day of evil" comes Paul makes it clear we need to be prepared and gives us the preparation plan; putting on and keeping on the full armor of God! {Ephesians 6.13-18}
