# Victory vs Victim Bible Study --- ## Background 2023.01.25 - Yesterday, I came across this quote from John Piper that prompted me to write a [[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_NOTES/2023.01.25.0749|journal entry]] and start this study. > Fight Sin Like a Victor, Not a Victim - Last summer, I did a small study on [[Overcome - Promises, Commands and Statements]]. I think reviewing my notes is a good place to start with this study - 2023.01.26 - I decided to transfer those notes to this study mainly because the format was much different than I am using now - Another source I need to review is: [[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_DUPS/Notes for Gary's Talk at NAU Retreat_2022]] - I think reviewing my notes is a good place to start with this study - As I go through the notes mentioned above, I'll record additional thoughts here 2023.01.28 - After thinking about what it means to be a victim, I can see countless stories from Genesis to Revelation and everywhere in between. - In [[Genesis_03|Genesis 3]], Adam played the victim: - when he and Eve tried to cover their sin with fig leaves {Genesis 3.7} - he continued when he blamed God for giving him Eve {Genesis 3.12} - I am going to make an assumption that alot / most of the time in our lives, we cry because for one reason or another we have become the victim. It isn't clear from scripture why there was crying and tears in the first place that needed wiping in [[Revelation_21|Revelation 21.4]]. If my earlier assumption is correct, then it is likely the crying / tears are do to victim-hood. {Revelation 21.4} - This study could really be colossal!! I will have to approach it with an attitude of victory and not victim-hood! - Wartime / Peacetime Mentality Comparison - As I was adding [[Victory]] and [[Victim]] to the topic list, I noticed the "[[Wartime_Mentality| wartime mentality]]" topic. - My first thought is that the victorious / victim comparison is essentially the same as the wartime / peacetime mentality comparison. - The more I thought about this overlap, I got to thinking about the current state of affairs in the world. It seems that there are powers in our country and others that are pushing us toward WWIII. - Strangely, it seems that the very ones driving us that direction are the same ones that want to control us. I say strangely, because if my thoughts mentioned above are correct, once the whole world is actively engaged in a world war battle similar to the first two, I believe it will wake up the "woke" generation to reality. This could in turn create a new "greatest generation." - On the other hand, because the current [[Generation]] is so lazy, there is a good chance the powers will go nuclear almost immediately and the woke people will just sit back and point fingers. Perhaps, this response is the one those in leadership are assuming. - This latter response is definitely one of victim-hood - I need to find those notes and consider adding them to this study. --- ## Questions 2026.03.20 - The SPEC stuff won't be used 2023.01.25 - What is the Biblical basis (if any) for Piper's statement? - How did the Israelites act like victims during the 10 plagues and during their time wandering the desert? - Over what are we to be victorious? - Although I am not doing [[NPL]] style studies anymore, I think the [[SPEC]] questions might be a good fit for this study - [[Sin]] to avoid - [[Promise]] to claim - [[Example]] to follow - [[Command]] to [[Obey]] 2022.07.29 - As the overcome stuff is moved into this study, the overcomer and overcomee should be documented --- ## ToDo - Look at: - Overcomer / Overcomee - I think it would be good to move the info from the [[Overcome - Promises, Commands and Statements]] note into this study - Victor / Vanquished - How did the Israelites act like victims during the 10 plagues and during their time wandering the desert? - Persevere / Quit - Conquering the beast {Revelation 15.2} - Triumph {Revelation 17.14} --- ## TL;DR --- ## Notes --- ### Luke 11 #### 2022.07.29 {14-22} - Context - Jesus was accused of driving out a demon by Beelzebul. - However, Jesus countered with a teaching about a house divided. - In the story, I assume Jesus is the one who overpowers ([[Overcome|overcomes]]) the strong man (Satan) {21-22} - Overcomer: [[Jesus]] - Ovecomee: [[Satan]] --- ### John 16 #### 2022.07.29 {0} - Context - Teaching on persecution, the promise of the [[Holy Spirit]], grief, joy, prayer {0} - Teaching {33} - Jesus said that He was telling the disciples about the Holy Spirit and other stuff so they may have peace ([[G1515]]). - He went on to say that in this world ([[G2889]]), they (all of us) will have tribulation ([[G2347]]). - He finished by saying that they (us) should take courage ([[G2293]]) because He has overcome ([[G3528]]) the world ([[G2889]]). - Overcomer: Jesus - Ovecomee: the world --- ### Romans 3 #### 2026.03.20 {4-6} - There is a radical difference between the Greek based translations and the Aramaic based translations. The differences are whether the subject of the verse is the judge or the judgee. - Here are the usual suspects: - prevail when you judge (NIV) - you will win your case in court (NLT) - prevail when you are judged (ESV, NASB, NET) - victorious when You judge (BSB, MSB) - prevail in Your being judged (BLB, LSV) - overcome when thou art judged (KJB) - OVERCOME WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED (LSB) - triumph when you judge (CSB) - prevail when you come into judgment (WEB) - mightest conquer in thy being judged (SLT) - Based on **verse 6**, I believe the correct translation is refers to God as the judge, not the judgee. {6} #### 2022.07.29 {3-4} - Context - God Remains Faithful - Overcomer - God - Overcomee - Not specified - Reward - "That You may be justified ([[G1344]]) in Your words ([[G3056]]), and will prevail ([[G3528]]) in Your being judged ([[G2919]])." {4} --- - [[Romans_12|Romans 12]] - 2022.07.29 {21} - Context - Teaching on forgiveness - Overcomer - Us (Paul's audience for his letter to the Romans) - Overcomee - Evil - Passage - Do not be [[Overcome]] ([[G3528]]) by evil ([[G2556]]), but [[Overcome]] ([[G3528]]) evil ([[G2556]]) with good ([[G0018]]). --- - [[1_John_02|1 John 2]] - 2022.07.29 {12-13} - Context - A new commandment - Overcomer - Young men - Overcomee - The evil one - Reward - ??
