Zechariah is quoting God and says that Jerusalem will be called the "City of Truth ([[H0571]])." {2} - The second occurrence is in **verse 16**. Again, Zechariah is quoting God. In light of God's resolve to do good to Jerusalem and Judah, they (and us) were commanded to: {16-17} - Speak truth ([[H0571]]) to one another - render true ([[H0571]]) and sound judgments --- ### Matthew 22 #### 2026.09.16 ##### Context - This is the story about paying taxes to Caesar where Jesus said, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” {15-22} ##### Notes - The Pharisees spoke deceitfully to Jesus when they "complemented" Him saying, "You teach (G1321) the way (G3598) of God in accordance with the truth (G0225)" {16} - I'm not exactly sure what "in accordance with the truth" means. He said that no one comes to to the Father is through Jesus {6} - After Jesus revealed the harsh truth, He relaxed things a little by promising that He would send "another Advocate" - the Spirit of truth {17} - the Holy Spirit {26} - will teach the disciples all things and remind them of everything He told them {26} - One could argue that verses 17 & 26 are a good example of the trinity {17, 26} - Compare with **John 4.23-24** {[[John_04_Notes|15-26]]} --- ### John 15 #### Date {26} --- ### John 16 #### Date {7, 13} --- ### John 17 #### Date {17, 19} --- ### John 18 #### 2026.09.05 {38, John 11.49-52} - At the beginning of my note below, I stated that Pilate should not be criticized for saying / asking "what is truth". However, I didn't provide any more justification for my statement - I fully acknowledge that it is likely Pilate thought he was just being sarcastic. But I think it is also possible he was speaking prophetically somewhat like Caiaphas in John 11.49-52. - Despite Pilate's failure to ultimately act on truth, I think he really was attempting to discern the truth about the charges brought against Jesus - According to John, after Pilate asked, "What is truth?" he pronounced to the Jews, "I find no basis for a charge against Him." - If his question was from God, then "so what?" #### 2026.08.31 {[[John_18_Notes|37-38]]} - Although there are good reasons to malign Pilate, his sarcastic question should not be one of them {38} - I think everyone should "belong to the truth" and be a "seeker of the truth" {37} - However, I think God gave a special assignment to a small subset of Christians. The Bible generally refers to this group as "prophet" - Other "titles" could include: - seeker of the truth - guardian of the truth - truth warrior" - I can't and shouldn't speak for any of the other 8+ billion people living today. That notwithstanding, I feel God telling me to be a guardian of the truth and / or a truth warrior. One role is defensive and the other is offensive. At this time, I am not sure on which, if not both He wants me to focus - Jesus said He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Since He is "the Truth," I need to seek Him everyday and I believe I should constantly ask the same question Pilate asked, "What is Truth?" {John 14.6, 38} #### 2017.10.31 ([[John_18_Notes|37-38]]) - Jesus said He came to testify to the truth {[[G0225]]} (37) - Then He said that everyone who belongs to the truth {[[G0225]]} listens to His voice (37) - Pilate responded with a sarcastic question, “What is truth {[[G0225]]}”?
