# Nuda Scriptura ### 2023.11.12 - To be clear, I do believe: - Scripture interprets itself. In other words, all of the key principles should be found in numerous places in the Bible and one or more of the occurrences will provide information that will help to understand a difficult passage - I should discuss my scriptural observations with others and evaluate their feedback. - I put low weight on the difficult passages without any self-explaining references - I don't believe - I should take the feedback from others as an absolute from God - I should read commentaries ### 2023.11.10 - I learned a new Latin phrase today, "Nuda Scriptura". To be clear, nothing changed wrt my view of [[Truth]] this morning. - According to [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuda_scriptura) (so it has to be true) "nuda scriptura" literally means "bare scripture". It is a "term used by some Protestants to describe the view that [[Scripture]] is the only rule of [[Faith]] to the exclusion of all other sources." - For the longest time, I have used the phrase "sola scriptura" to describe my theology. However, again quoting Wikipedia, sola scriptura "teaches that the scripture alone is infallible, without excluding [[Church]] [[Tradition]] and other sources entirely, but viewing them as subordinate and ministerial." - This note is NOT a dissertation on the subject, but rather the first of such on the subject - I guess, until this morning I didn't know that "sola scriptura" allowed for church tradition to influence "truth" even IF from a subordinate position. - For years I have insisted that the Bible ALONE is THE sufficient source of truth! Until this morning I thought the phrase "sola scriptura" communicated that principle. But it doesn't. - So, going forward (until God changes my view) I will use the phrase "nuda scriptura".
