# Strength (G2479) Study
## Background
- The genesis of this word study is my [[Great_Commandment_Study|Great Commandment Study (GC)]]. See the [[Great_Commandment_Keywords_Study|Great Commandment Keywords Study]] for more details as they apply to the GC.
## Questions
- In the Great Commandment context, what does "strength (G2479)" mean?
## ToDo
- ToDo Study
- Look at all the instances of this Strong's word
## TL;DR
- There is some sort of connection between power and strength {Ephesians 1.19, Ephesians 6.10, 2 Thessalonians 1.9, 2 Peter 2.11, Revelation 5.12 and Revelation 7.12}
- Although not the exclusive definition, there is a chance strength could refer to the physical strength of our bodies. {Mark 12.30 & 33, Luke 10.27, Ephesians 1.19 and 2 Thessalonians 1}
- Paul used physical armor on our physical bodies as an analogy to discuss spiritual warfare. Though not as strong an example, there is still some connection between strength and our bodies {Ephesians 6.10}
## Chapter-by-Chapter Notes
### Matthew 22
250218 {37}
- Strength (G2479) does NOT occur in this version of the Great Commandment (GC)
- However, Jesus did mention the other three key elements of our existence; heart, soul and mind
### Mark 12
250218 {30, 33}
- These two occurrences of (G2479) were the genesis of this word study. The outcome of this study will be applied to the (GC).
- In the GC context, the other descriptions of our existence are described first, then "strength" is added last.
- In light of this context analysis, it would seem "strength" refers to our bodies
### Luke 10
250218 {27}
- In this version of the GC, an expert in the law (probably a scribe) recited the GC instead of Jesus.
- The scribe flipped the last two in the list (strength then mind)
### Ephesians 1
250218 {19}
- The immediate context of this occurrence is Paul praying for the Ephesians that God would give them a spirit of wisdom and revelation
- In particular, Paul asked that their eyes would be enlightened so they would know the surpassing greatness of His power (G1411) in accordance with His strength (G2479) that He exerted when He raised Jesus from the dead and seated Jesus at His right hand.
- In keeping with my theory mentioned above in Mark 12 that "strength" refers to our bodies, the "strength" Paul discussed in this passage has to do with God raising Jesus' body from the grave and transporting Him (Jesus) to His (God's) right hand
- There is some sort of connection between strength and power
### Ephesians 6
250218 {10}
- Paul is exhorting the Ephesians (and us) to be "strong (G2479) in the Lord and His mighty power."
- He goes on to tell them and us to put on the full armor of God
- I am guessing, it is through the "full armor of God" that we can appropriate the strength and power of God
- Paul used physical armor on our physical bodies as an analogy to discuss spiritual warfare. Though not as strong an example, there is still some connection between strength and our bodies
### 2 Thessalonians 1
250219 {9}
- Context - Paul is writing to the Thessalonians about Jesus' return
- As stated elsewhere by Jesus and others, in the end, there will be two groups of people; those going to be with God and Jesus and those eternally separated from Them.
- WRT this study, the BSB translated G2479 into "might"
- One of the rewards or consequences of being in / out is being in the presence of the Lord and the glory of His might.
- It is unclear to me exactly to what the "glory of His might" refers. It could be some sort of power / strength thing or it could be Jesus' body as I postulated earlier
- The various usual translations include:
- glory of his might - NIV, ESV, BSB, LSB, MSB, WEB
- his glorious power - NLT
- glory of His power - BLB, KJB, NASB
- his glorious strength - CSB
- glory of his strength - NET
### 1 Peter 4
250220 {11}
- In some manner, Peter connected "serving one another" with "the strength (G2479) God provides".
- In the previous verse, Peter refers to this as a "gift" from God
### 2 Peter 2
250220 {11}
- There's at least two germane points I see in this verse
- Angels are greater in strength (G2479) and power ([[G1411]]) than the false prophets
- Based on the context, it would seem that strength and power are not the same. However, once again, they are juxtaposed
### Revelation 5
250220 {8-12}
- When the Lamb (Jesus) takes the scroll numerous entities went into full-blown worship mode {8-11}
- Next myriads of myriads of angels said in a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power (G1411) and riches and wisdom and strength (G2479) and honor and glory and blessing!" {12}
- See my comment above on 2 Peter 2 about strength and power
### Revelation 7
250220 {12}
- In a similar manner to that described in Revelation 5, numerous entities worshiped God saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power (G1411) and strength (G2479) be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
- See my comment above on 2 Peter 2 about strength and power
