# Romans 1 --- ## Paul Greets the Saints in Rome - 1 - (BSB) - Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, and set apart for the gospel of God— - (BLB) - Paul, servant of Jesus Christ, a called apostle having been set apart for _the_ gospel of God, - 2 - (BSB) - the gospel He promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, - (BLB) - which He promised beforehand through His prophets in _the_ Holy Scriptures, - 3 - (BSB) - regarding His Son, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh, - (BLB) - concerning His Son, having come of _the_ seed of David according to flesh, - 4 - (BSB) - and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. - (BLB) - having been declared _the_ Son of God in power according to _the_ Spirit of holiness, by resurrection _from the_ dead: Jesus Christ our Lord, - 5 - (BSB) - Through Him and on behalf of His name, we received grace and apostleship to call all those among the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. - (BLB) - through whom we have received grace and apostleship unto obedience of faith among all the Gentiles on behalf of His name, - 6 - (BSB) - And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. - (BLB) - among whom are you also, called of Jesus Christ. - 7a - (BSB) - To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: - (BLB) - To all those being in Rome beloved of God, called saints: - 7b - (BSB) - Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. - (BLB) - Grace to you and peace from God our Father and _the_ Lord Jesus Christ. --- ## Unashamed of the Gospel - 8 - (BSB) - First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being proclaimed all over the world. - (BLB) - First indeed, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being proclaimed in all the world. - 9 - (BSB) - God, whom I serve with my spirit {Or "in my spirit "} in preaching the gospel of His Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you - (BLB) - For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the gospel of His Son, is my witness how unceasingly I make mention of you, - 10 - (BSB) - in my prayers at all times, asking that now at last by God’s will I may succeed in coming to you. - (BLB) - always upon my prayers imploring, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I will make a prosperous journey to come to you. - 11 - (BSB) - For I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, - (BLB) - For I long to see you, that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, to your strengthening, - 12 - (BSB) - that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. - (BLB) - and, that is, to be encouraged together among you through the faith among one another, both of you and of me. - 13 - (BSB) - I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, how often I planned to come to you (but have been prevented from visiting {Literally "but have been prevented" } until now), in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. - (BLB) - Now I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, that many times I purposed to come to you, and was hindered until the present, that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among the other Gentiles. - 14 - (BSB) - I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, {Literally "to Greeks and barbarians "} both to the wise and the foolish. - (BLB) - I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to _the_ wise and _the_ foolish. - 15 - (BSB) - That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. - (BLB) - Thus as to me _there is_ readiness to preach the gospel also to you who _are_ in Rome. - 16 - (BSB) - I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, then to the Greek. - (BLB) - For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is _the_ power of God unto salvation to everyone believing--both to Jewish first, and to Greek. - 17 - (BSB) - For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, {Literally "For in it is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith"} just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” {[[Habakkuk_02|Habakkuk 2.4]]} - (BLB) - For in it _the_ righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it has been written: "And the righteous will live by faith." --- ## God’s Wrath against Sin - 18 [[G3709|The wrath]] [[G2316|of God]] [[G0601|is being revealed]] [[G0575|from]] [[G3772|heaven]] against all the [[G0763|godlessness]] and [[G0093|wickedness]] of men who [[G2722|suppress]] the [[G0225|truth]] by their [[G0093|wickedness]]. - 19 - (BSB) - For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. - (BLB) - because the known of God is manifest among them, for God has revealed _it_ to them. - 20 - (BSB) - For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse. - (BLB) - For from [[G2937|{the} creation]] [[G2889|of {the} world]] His [[G0517 |invisible qualities]], both His [[G0126|eternal]] [[G1411|power]] and [[G2305|divinity]], [[G2529|are clearly seen]], [[G3539|being understood]] by the [[G4161|things made]], for them to be [[G0379|without excuse]]. - 21 - (BSB) - For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts. - (BLB) - For having known God, they glorified _Him_ not as God, or were thankful; but they became futile in their thinking and their foolish heart was darkened. - 22 - (BSB) - Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools, - (BLB) - Professing to be wise, they became fools, - 23 - (BSB) - and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. - (BLB) - and they changed the glory of the immortal God into a likeness of an image of mortal man and birds and quadrupeds and creeping things. - 24 - (BSB) - Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonoring of their bodies with one another. - (BLB) - Therefore God gave them up in the desires of their hearts to impurity to dishonor their bodies between themselves, - 25 - (BSB) - They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise! {Or "forever blessed" } Amen. - (BLB) - who changed the truth of God into falsehood, and reverenced and served the created thing beyond the _One_ having created _it_, who is blessed to the ages! Amen. - 26 - (BSB) - For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. - (BLB) - Because of this, God gave up them to passions of dishonor. For even their females changed the natural use into that contrary to nature. - 27 - (BSB) - Likewise, the men abandoned natural relations with women and burned with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. - (BLB) - And likewise also the males, having left the natural use of the female, were inflamed in their desire toward one another, males with males, working out shame and receiving in themselves the recompense which was fitting of their error. - 28 - (BSB) - Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, He gave them up to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. - (BLB) - And as they did not see fit to have God in _their_ knowledge, God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do things not being proper; - 29 - (BSB) - They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, - (BLB) - being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, malice; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness; gossips, - 30 - (BSB) - slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful. They invent new forms of evil; they disobey their parents. - (BLB) - slanderers, hateful to God, insolent, arrogant, boastful; inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents; - 31 - (BSB) - They are senseless, faithless, heartless, merciless. - (BLB) - foolish, untrustworthy, heartless, unmerciful; - 32 - (BSB) - Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things are worthy of death, they not only continue to do these things, but also approve of those who practice them. - (BLB) - who having known the righteous judgment of God, that those doing such things are worthy of death, not only are practicing them, but are also approving of those practicing _them_. --- - Previous chapter: [[John_21]] - Next chapter: [[Romans_02]] - TOC: [[TOC_Romans]] --- ###### The Holy Bible, Berean Standard Bible (https://bereanbible.com), BSB is produced in cooperation with Bible Hub (https://biblehub.com), Discovery Bible (https://discoverybible.com), OpenBible.com (https://openbible.com), and the Berean Bible Translation Committee.
