# Righteousness Bible Study ## Background - Started 2016.05.04 ## Questions - What does it look like to “hunger and thirst after righteousness”? {Psalm 42.2, Psalm 63.1, Psalm 107.9, Psalm 119.20, Psalm 143.6, Proverbs 8.17, Proverbs 21.21, Isaiah 26.9, Isaiah 55.1, Matthew 5.6, John 4.10-15, John 7.37-38} {[[Righteousness]]} - How is the thirst for righteousness different than the thirst satisfied by living water? {John 4.10-15, Revelation 7.14-17, Revelation  21.6, Revelation 22.1,17} - Is the “living water” available now, or only in the new Jerusalem? {John 6.35} - What is the relationship between “righteousness” and “living water”? {Isaiah 12.3, Jeremiah 2.13} - What is the role of the Holy Spirit in all this? - How is “truth” related to righteousness? {1 John 1.6-8, 1 John 2.4} - How is righteousness related to my identity in Jesus? - How does peace come from righteousness? - What is the connection between power and righteousness? - What is "right standing with God"? - What does righteousness look like? ## ToDo - Cleanup - Start at Matt 10 - Look at - [[H6662]] - [[H6664]] - [[H6666]] - [[H6771]] - thirsty - [[H6774]] - thirsty ground - [[H8264]] - - Verses for questions above - (1) Psalm 42.2, Psalm 63.1, Psalm 107.9, Psalm 119.20, Psalm 143.6, Proverbs 8.17, Proverbs 21.21, Isaiah 26.9, Isaiah 55.1, Matthew 5.6, John 4.10-15, John 7.37-38 - (2) John 4.10-15, Revelation 7.14-17, Revelation  21.6, Revelation 22.1,17 - (3) John 6.35 - (4) Isaiah 12.3, Jeremiah 2.13 - (5) 1 John 1.6-8, 1 John 2.4 ## Takeaways - Obviously, there are aspects (points of view) of this thirst thing that I don’t understand.  - From Moses’ point of view, the people thirsted after water to the point of a near riot. (**Exodus 17.3**) - Isaiah’s view of this scene was that they didn’t thirst because God provided water from the rock. (**Isaiah 48.21**) - Some examples of hungering and thirsting after God: - I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water (**Psalm 63.1**) - My soul yearns for you in the night; my spirit within me earnestly seeks you (**Isaiah 26.9**) - Jesus is the Righteous One (**Acts 3.14**, **Acts 7.52**, **Acts 22.14**) - This whole “hunger and thirst for righteousness” thing is all about the pursuit of it (**1 John 2.29**).  If I “practice” righteousness, then I am righteous. On the other hand, if I don’t practice righteousness and / or if I practice sin, then I am not born of God. (**1 John 3.7-10**) - There is a connection between “practicing truth” {**1 John 1.6** }and “practicing righteousness” {1 John 2.29 & 1 John 3.7 & 10}. ## Chapter by Chapter Notes --- ### Exodus 17 2024.02.12 {3} - There are two thirst related words in **verse 3** - Thirsty [[H6770]] - Thirst [[H6772]] 2016.10.25 {1-3} - From Moses’ point of view, the people thirsted after water to the point of a near riot. - Isaiah’s view of this scene recorded in **Isaiah 48.21** was that they didn’t thirst because God provided water from the rock. - Obviously, there are aspects (points of view) of this thirst thing that I don’t understand. --- ### Psalm 42 2024.09.11 - Although seeking God is a VERY good thing, I an not sure how this related to "righteousness" - 777 - Lord, if there IS a connection, please show me 2016.10.25 {1-2} - The psalmist is desperately seeking God. - Pants [1-x2] = [[H6165]] - 3 occurrences - Def: to long for - Thirst [2] = [[H6770]] --- ### Psalm 63 2024.02.12 {1} - David said he was seeking, thirsting and yearning for God with himself, his soul and his body 2016.10.23 {1} - A good example of going after God with everything. --- ### Psalm 107 2024.02.13 [[Psalm_107|Psalm 107]] - The context for this psalm is thanksgiving for deliverance. (6) 2016.10.23 (10) - Jesus is promising the Kingdom of heaven to those who are persecuted “because of” righteousness {[[G1343]]}. I have to admit, I am not sure how that works {17} - Paul also said that the righteous {[[G1342]]} will live by faith. Again, I am still struggling to grasp the concept of righteousness {17} 2024.02.12 {[[Romans_01|Romans 1.18-32]]} - In this section, Paul goes off on those whose godlessness and wickedness who suppress the truth by their wickedness {18} - He ends this section by referring to "God's righteous decree {[[G1345]]}" {32} --- #### Romans 2 Date {[[Romans_02|Romans 2.1-16]]} - Romans 2.5 - Romans 2.13 Date {[[Romans_02|Romans 2.17-29]]} - Romans 2.26 --- #### Romans 3 - Romans 3.5 - Romans 3.10 - 5/4/16 - This seems clear that no one is righteous!  - However, in [**Philippians 3.6**](#7rcwjui20899 "#7rcwjui20899"), Paul claims he was faultless wrt righteousness????
