- It just occurred to me that even though the **verse 6** says Jesus will be called "Everlasting Father", it doesn't say that He IS The Father God. In one respect, there have been billions of "everlasting fathers"
- 2022.10.04
- Perhaps, a way of looking at the OT examples of Jesus being called God is Jesus' explanation in [[JOhn_10|John 10.33-38]].

- There are several names associated with an entity in **verse 6**. Most people connect these with Jesus. The names are:
- Wonderful Counselor
- Mighty God
- Everlasting Father
- Prince of Peace
- Most people believe this passage refers to Jesus. Assuming that is true, then Jesus is “el” [[H0410]]
- At some point in the past, I changed the focus of this study based on what I had learned up to that point.
- My premise is that Jesus’ NT moniker is not “God”. The moniker “God” is reserved for the Father
- On the other hand, this passage is an example of Jesus “being God” in the OT sense

- Matthew quotes a passage from Isaiah 7.14 calling Jesus "Immanuel". Matthew then adds a parenthetical statement, "which means 'God with us'". It is interesting that there are several notes in the BSB saying that Immanuel means "God with us." However, other than the parenthetical statement from Matthew, that definition isn't anywhere else in scripture. {23}

- [[Matthew_03|Matthew 3]]
- 2023.05.05 {13-17}
- Context: Jesus' baptism
- When Jesus came up out of the water {16-17}
- He (Jesus) saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him (Jesus)
- A voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”
- Most people (including me) say this is a good example of the "trinity" {16-17}
- However, somehow a lot of people use this passage to "prove" Jesus is called God. I don't see it!
- Some observations about the scene:
- It's probable that Matthew was NOT an eye witness to this scene
- Matthew doesn't say that he was present
- Matthew had not yet been called as a disciple
- Matthew was an outcast since he was a tax collector
- However, Luke {**Luke 3.12**} says that "tax collectors" came to be baptized. So, it is possible Matthew was one of them
- Matthew refers to the Holy Spirit as the "Spirit of God".
- Jesus was in the water
- A voice from heave talked about Jesus and referred to Him as his "beloved Son"
- It would seem that Matthew is connecting "God" with the voice from heaven rather than Jesus in the water
- Since the voice from heaven referred to Jesus as 'My beloved Son' it seems reasonable to assume the voice is from God the Father
- In light of my observations, I think this is a good passage to conclude that Jesus is NOT called God but rather the Son of God

- 2023.05.05 {1-11}
- Context: The temptation of Jesus
- In two of the three temptations, Satan asked / tempted Jesus by saying "if You are the Son of God ..."
- On one hand, we know Satan is a liar and everything he says is a lie. So, drawing any conclusion based on something he says is not advisable
- On the other hand, if Jesus was NOT the Son of God, Satan's temptation wouldn't be much of a temptation
- Based on other passages, I think it is reasonable to conclude that Jesus is in fact the "Son of God" {3, 6}
- In all three temptations, Jesus' responded with scripture and in each of the three responses, He included a reference to "God". I've written this before in this study, but it just seems strange to me for Jesus to talk about "God" in third person if He (Jesus) should be called God. {4, 7, 10}

- In Jesus' teaching, He refers to "your Father ([[G3962]]) in heaven ([[G3772]])" {16}
- Although I don't currently see any connection between that statement and this study, I thought it was interesting
- 2023.05.09 {8}
- There are two verses in the beatitudes that make it difficult for Jesus to be called God; verses 8 & 9.
- Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. {8}
- Either Jesus is saying that no one is "pure in heart" and therefore no one will see God (which of course is true) or He (Jesus) is referring exclusively to His Father
- Obviously, the people being taught were looking at Jesus when He was teaching. So, if Jesus is called God, then all those that saw Him were "pure in heart"
- My current theology is:
- Jesus is not called God
- No one in and of themselves is pure in heart
- Only through the blood of Jesus are we "declared" pure and therefore enabled to see God the Father
- This verse especially builds the case that Jesus is NOT called God.
- See the entry for Matthew 5 on the [[Know_the_Trinity_Study|Know the Trinity Bible Study]] for more thoughts on this verse
- 2023.05.09 {9}
- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons ([[G5207]]) of God ([[G2316]]). {9}
- Jesus said the peacemakers will be called sons of God
- At this time, I don't recall any verses explicitly saying that believers will be sons of Jesus.
- See my notes on [[1_John_03|1 John 3.1-3]] below for my thoughts on believers being "children of God the Father"
- I guess I need to study what it means to be a son of God and / or son of the Father.
- So, unless there are specific verses explicitly saying we are sons of Jesus, then there is doubt.
- Although I am confident "sons of God" exclusively refers to God the Father, I am going to code this one as "unsure" so I will come back to it again in the future.

- See my comments below dated 2023.01.03
- If "God" in the "Kingdom of God" refers to Jesus, then He should be called God. However, the only way to arrive at that conclusion based on these verses is to use circular reasoning.
- The Kingdom of God is Jesus' kingdom therefore Jesus is called God.
- 2023.01.03 ^noj-40-16
- Based on the context, it seems obvious that the "Son of Man" in this verse refers to Jesus. {28}
- In addition to giving us that name for Jesus, there is an interesting combination when compared to the two parallel passages, [[Names_of_Jesus_Study#^noj-41-01|Mark 9.1]] & [[Names_of_Jesus_Study#^noj-42-09|Luke 9.27]] . Mark and Luke record that Jesus said "kingdom of God". So, it could be said that these three passages put together are examples of Jesus being called God.

- However, my other thoughts at Matthew 16.28 dated 2023.02.11 discuss circular reasoning to arrive at that conclusion {1}
- 2022.12.27
- Although Mark did not identify the voice from the cloud, Peter did in [[2_Peter_01|2 Peter 1.17]]. There, Peter said the voice was "God the Father." Assuming that is correct, then for whatever reason, God the Father chose to identify Jesus as"My beloved Son." Jesus is NOT called God {7}

- Verses 1-12
- Jesus talked about "God" twice in this section as if God were a separate entity in a similar manner in which Jesus talked about Moses. I doubt anyone would say that Jesus is Moses, so why would they say that Jesus is God? {6, 9}
- Verses 13-16
- Twice in this section, Jesus talked about the "kingdom of God". If Jesus is "God", then why did He refer to His Kingdom in third person? I think a better literal exploitation is that Jesus is NOT called God. {14, 15}
- Verses 17-31
- Again Jesus twice mentioned the kingdom of God. See my notes above {23, 25}
- Jesus also said that all things are possible with God two different ways. I am counting these two occurrence separately from the two in verses 23 & 25 because these are different. {27}
- Verses 32-34
- Even though Jesus referred to Himself as the "Son of Man" in third person, I don't recall Him referring to "God" in other places and the context clearly showing that Jesus is God. So, in this section I believe Jesus is saying the He is also called "Son of Man" and there is no evidence in this section that Jesus IS called God. {32-34}
- Verses 35-45
- James and John referred to Jesus as "Teacher" {35}
- Jesus referred to Himself in third person as the "Son of Man" {45}
- Verses 46-52
- Mark referred to Jesus as "Jesus of Nazareth" {47}
- Twice Bartimaeus called out to Jesus and referred to Him as "Son of David" {47-48}
- Later in the story, Bartimaeus referred to Jesus as "Rabboni" {51}
- 2021.06.01 {18}
- Either this was an sideways way of telling the rich man that He is God, or Jesus was talking about Himself and God as separate entities
- If Jesus has all the characteristics of God, which I do believe, and I believe that one of the characteristics is “goodness”, then maybe Jesus is in fact saying that He is God.
- On the other hand, one of the characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit is “goodness” [[G0019]] / [[G0019b]]. That Greek word comes from [[G0018]] which is the “good” used in this verse. So, it would seem that via the [[Holy Spirit]], it is possible for a believer to be “good”.

- Peter refers to Jesus as "Rabbi" {21}
- Jesus replies to Peter's comment by exhorting them to "Have faith in God". He then goes on to talk about answered prayer. It seems strange for Jesus to talk about Himself in third person. So, I think He is saying that He and "God" are separate entities. {22-24}

- 2023.02.26 {13-17}
- I wouldn't want to base my NOJ conclusions on the words of the Pharisees and Herodians. However, when they are validated by Jesus ...
- The Pharisees and Herodians "commended" Jesus for teaching the way of God. The language implies Jesus and God are separate {14}
- In Jesus' response, He said to "Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s." It sure seems that Jesus is implying the He and God are separate {17}
- 2023.02.26 {18-27}
- There are several instances in this section. I am going to count them as two separate examples
- In Jesus' response to the Sadducees, He referred to the "power of God" as if it were something from an entity other than Himself {24}
- Next, Jesus talked about the exchange between Moses and "God." In that exchange, Jesus quoted [[Exodus_03|Exodus 3.6]] which is a quote from "God". Then, Jesus wrapped it up by saying, "He is not the God of the dead, but of the living." It sure seems Jesus is communicating that He and God are separate. {26-27}
- 2023.02.26 {28-34}
- Jesus quotes parts of [[Deuteronomy_06|Deuteronomy 6.4-5]] in His response to the scribe's question.
- In the first part Jesus says, "the Lord our God, the Lord is One." This phrase and others like it is the thing that causes all sorts of wild imaginative ideas on how it is possible for God to be "One" and at the same time "three". I contend, based on this study, that since Jesus is NOT called God and "God" is a reference to the Father, there is no problem with the fact that "God" IS "One" . {29}
- Next, Jesus repeats the command to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Even if the previous phrase about oneness wasn't there, Jesus seems to refer to God as a separate entity in this command. {30}
- Next in the story, the scribe speaks {32}
- First, he refers to Jesus as "Teacher"
- Then, he paraphrases the Great Commandment repeating the phrase "God is One".
- The scribe seems to speak as if Jesus and God are separate entities
- Additionally, since this was written by Mark many years after Jesus' death, it would seem that he would have added some sort of parenthetical comment that Jesus is God.
- Finally, Mark concludes the story by quoted Jesus saying to the scribe. "You are not far from the kingdom of God." If Jesus were God, why would He refer to His kingdom in third person? {34}
- 2023.02.26 {35-37}
- Lots of names of Jesus in this section. Although Jesus is using the third person to talk about Himself, I see it as different than the other examples where I use the third person thing to "prove" that Jesus is NOT called God. In the others, the best literal interpretation is that Jesus and God are separate. However, in this section, it seems that Jesus is deliberately bringing up a confusing passage in [[Psalm_110|Psalm 110.1]] and applying it to Himself.
- The names Jesus mentioned were: "Christ", "Son of David" and "Lord"

- Context - Jesus is teaching His disciples about the end-times
- Jesus referred to "God's creation". He seemed to imply "God" was a separate entity {19}
- Next, Jesus talked about the "Lord ([[G2962]])". Jesus refers to the Lord as a separate entity in the first half of the verse. Then, in the second half of the verse Jesus continues to talk about the Lord, but via two third person singular verbs {20}
- He has chosen ([[G1586]])
- He has cut them short ([[G2856]])
- Finally, Jesus wraps up this section by talking about false Christs. I don't think He would have been talking about "false" Christs unless He and the disciples thought of Jesus as "Christ" {21-23}
- Verses 24-27
- Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of Man {26}
- Jesus seems to be saying that the Son of Man (whom I just said in the line above is Jesus) will gather His elect.

- Verse 20 says the "Lord" has chosen the elect. Then, verse 27 says the Son of Man will gather His elect

### John 5
#### 2021.05.22 {18}
- In **verse 18**, John said that the reason the Jews were bent on killing Jesus was because Jesus claimed God as His Father thus making Him equal with God. It seems clear that John is saying: {18}
- Jesus is the Son of God
- Jesus is equal with God
- There is no mention of Jesus BEING God
- In **verses 19-30**, it seems clear that Jesus is claiming that God the Father is His Father or said differently, Jesus is the Son of God the Father. {19-30}

- I can't think of a section in the Bible that more clearly says that Jesus should NOT be called "God" than this one.
- Jesus Himself lays it out plainly!
- To start it off, when the Jews quizzed Him about being the Christ, Jesus responded with "I already told you" {24-25}
- Further down the argument, Jesus says He is the "Son of God" {36}
- 2022.10.04 {33-38}
- Although I contend that I can't find anything in the Bible that says we should refer to Jesus as "God", I am not questioning His deity.
- My interpretation of these passages is the best example I can find that expresses my view.
- I do recognize that others choose to interpret these verses just the opposite.
- What I find interesting is that they always start quoting extra Biblical sources for their arguments. As far as I am able, I am attempting to use nothing but scripture.

- I think Jesus is communicating that perhaps He is "God" just like each of us are "gods"
- To restate the bullet above, in my current thinking:
- Jesus is NOT God the Father
- We (to include Jesus) are gods AND sons of the Most High (the Father)
- Unlike the rest of creation, Jesus is the first born from the dead

- The immediate context is about Paul’s qualifications as an apostle. The broader context is about the resurrection of Jesus and everyone else
- When Paul mentioned that he persecuted the church, he refers to it as “the church of God.”

- This one really needs an entire note. I’ll record a few points now so I can remember my initial thoughts
- It appears Paul is saying in **verses 6-7** that at one point in time, Jesus existed in the form of God, then at another point in time, Jesus was made in human likeness. (BTW, this isn’t contradictory to omnitemporality {omni-T}. Based on my understanding of omni-T, Jesus is omni-T as well as God. Any being that is omni-T is not limited by time and therefore it is possible for Jesus to be in the form of God and in the form of man with no limitations on when in “human” history such things occurred.) So, although Paul says Jesus existed in the form of God, that doesn’t make Him “God”.
- Paul goes on to say in **verse 9** that “God” exalted Him (Jesus) to the highest place … It seems that Paul is implying that God and Jesus are separate entities
- Finally, in **verse 11**, Paul says:
- Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord
- This confession will be to the glory of “God the Father
- It seems that Paul is implying that Jesus is Lord and the Father is God

- Verses 1-12
- Jesus talked about "God" twice in this section as if God were a separate entity in a similar manner in which Jesus talked about Moses. I doubt anyone would say that Jesus is Moses, so why would they say that Jesus is God? {6, 9}
- Verses 13-16
- Twice in this section, Jesus talked about the "kingdom of God". If Jesus is "God", then why did He refer to His Kingdom in third person? I think a better literal exploitation is that Jesus is NOT called God. {14, 15}
- Verses 17-31
- Again Jesus twice mentioned the kingdom of God. See my notes above {23, 25}
- Jesus also said that all things are possible with God two different ways. I am counting these two occurrence separately from the two in verses 23 & 25 because these are different. {27}
- Verses 32-34
- Even though Jesus referred to Himself as the "Son of Man" in third person, I don't recall Him referring to "God" in other places and the context clearly showing that Jesus is God. So, in this section I believe Jesus is saying the He is also called "Son of Man" and there is no evidence in this section that Jesus IS called God. {32-34}
- Verses 35-45
- James and John referred to Jesus as "Teacher" {35}
- Jesus referred to Himself in third person as the "Son of Man" {45}
- Verses 46-52
- Mark referred to Jesus as "Jesus of Nazareth" {47}
- Twice Bartimaeus called out to Jesus and referred to Him as "Son of David" {47-48}
- Later in the story, Bartimaeus referred to Jesus as "Rabboni" {51}
- 2021.06.01 {18}

- 2023.02.26 {13-17}
- I wouldn't want to base my NOJ conclusions on the words of the Pharisees and Herodians. However, when they are validated by Jesus ...
- The Pharisees and Herodians "commended" Jesus for teaching the way of God. The language implies Jesus and God are separate {14}
- In Jesus' response, He said to "Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s." It sure seems that Jesus is implying the He and God are separate {17}
- 2023.02.26 {18-27}
- There are several instances in this section. I am going to count them as two separate examples
- In Jesus' response to the Sadducees, He referred to the "power of God" as if it were something from an entity other than Himself {24}
- Next, Jesus talked about the exchange between Moses and "God." In that exchange, Jesus quoted [[Exodus_03|Exodus 3.6]] which is a quote from "God". Then, Jesus wrapped it up by saying, "He is not the God of the dead, but of the living." It sure seems Jesus is communicating that He and God are separate. {26-27}
- 2023.02.26 {28-34}
- Jesus quotes parts of [[Deuteronomy_06|Deuteronomy 6.4-5]] in His response to the scribe's question.
- In the first part Jesus says, "the Lord our God, the Lord is One." This phrase and others like it is the thing that causes all sorts of wild imaginative ideas on how it is possible for God to be "One" and at the same time "three". I contend, based on this study, that since Jesus is NOT called God and "God" is a reference to the Father, there is no problem with the fact that "God" IS "One" . {29}
- Next, Jesus repeats the command to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Even if the previous phrase about oneness wasn't there, Jesus seems to refer to God as a separate entity in this command. {30}
- Next in the story, the scribe speaks {32}
- Finally, Mark concludes the story by quoted Jesus saying to the scribe. "You are not far from the kingdom of God." If Jesus were God, why would He refer to His kingdom in third person? {34}
- 2023.02.26 {35-37}

- Next, Jesus talked about the "Lord ([[G2962]])". Jesus refers to the Lord as a separate entity in the first half of the verse. Then, in the second half of the verse Jesus continues to talk about the Lord, but via two third person singular verbs {20}
- He has chosen ([[G1586]])
- He has cut them short ([[G2856]])
- Finally, Jesus wraps up this section by talking about false Christs. I don't think He would have been talking about "false" Christs unless He and the disciples thought of Jesus as "Christ" {21-23}

- The Greek is odd
- There are variations in the translation
- Paul is not teaching about Jesus’ name
- However, it does seem that Paul is saying that Jesus is deity
- I think the phrase “God over all” refers to Jesus having all authority

- The immediate context is about Paul’s qualifications as an apostle. The broader context is about the resurrection of Jesus and everyone else
- When Paul mentioned that he persecuted the church, he refers to it as “the church of God.”
- Since the church is Jesus’ body / bride then it could be said that the church is His. If that assumption is correct, then when Paul said that he persecuted the “church of God”, he could be saying that Jesus is God
- However, if Paul was trying to make a theological point, he went about it sideways

- Based on the whole book of Revelation, I'm pretty sure the one seated on the throne is God the Father
- One thing that is interesting is that the speaker (I assume it is God the Father) claims two of the three monikers that Jesus does in [[Names_of_Jesus_Bible_Study#^noj-66-22|Revelation 22.12-13]].
- Alpha and the Omega
- Beginning and the End
- At this point, I don't see that it is a problem for both God the Father and Jesus to claim the same monikers. I think they could be interpreted as adjectives instead of nouns
- 2022.10.08 {5-7}
- Jesus / the Father said "The one who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son." There is similar language used several places talking about the relationship between the Father and Jesus. So, IF (and I need to find those references) my memory is correct, then if those other passages and this one corroborate my view that God and His Son Jesus are separate entities. Otherwise, then all the overcomers (hopefully including me) will be "GOD", which I believe is wrong
- 2022.03.04 {5-7}
- Although “the One seated on the throne” has consistently been identified as “God”, there is a possibility it could be Jesus
- Both Jesus and “the One seated on the throne” are NOT both in view in this paragraph so this is an “NA” entry
- It is included here because some people have connected “Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End” in this book.
- As of this date, I have not done an exhaustive study of those two names. There is a possibility I could revise this note in the future.
