Then He said that His food is to do the will of Him who sent Him and to finish His work. - It is possible that our "daily bread" is our daily assignment from God. --- - 2020.02.23 {13} - Jesus told us to ask the Father to "lead us not into [[Temptation]]". The Greek word "peirasmos" ([[G3986]]) can mean a [[Trial]] or a temptation. Since it says elsewhere that God can't tempt anyone, it doesn't make sense to me that we should pray that God wouldn't tempt us. That would seem counter to praying in His name. The Greek word for lead us is eispheró" ([[G1533]]) - On the other hand, I can think of another way to interpret this verse: Don't lead me into [[Test|testing]] --- - 2020.02.21 {11} - This morning, I was pondering what Jesus meant by "daily" when he said, "Give us this day our daily bread". I forgot about "this day". I'll look at that also. - One of the thoughts I had about daily bread was the bread of the presence. I'll look at that tomorrow. - Back to "this day our daily". - Other translations for "this day" ([[G4594]]) - today--NIV, NLT, BLB, CSB, NET, WEB - This day--ESV, BSB, NASB, KJB - All the usual translations say "daily" - [[Luke_11|Luke 11.3]] is a little different: "Give us each day our daily bread". Each day is two Greek words, kath’ ([[G2596]]) and hēmeran ([[G2250]]) - As I was working on this, it occurred to me that the "daily bread" is like the daily manna. So the audience that Jesus was talking to would have understood that metaphor. --- - 2020.02.20 [11] - In the prayer that Jesus taught the disciples, He said we should ask the Father, "Give us the day our daily bread". All of the translations except the BLB say the same thing. The BLB says, "Our daily bread, grant us today." which appears to be a good literal translation. - My thoughts this morning have to do with the imperative, "give us" that Jesus said we should say to the Father. - It sounds like an entitlement mentality. - [[777]]--Lord, are we supposed to approach the Father with an entitlement mentality? - Perhaps, the connotation of the words "give" in my mind is negative. Perhaps my understanding of "grant" is a better word. I think of "give" as an entitlement. I think of "grant" as more of a gift with some confidence. For example, it is reasonable for a child to "expect" his parents to feed him. Despite that expectation, I was taught and I think I taught my kids that they shouldn't approach me with the imperative, "feed me!". - However, I am not fully convinced either way. - [[777]]--Lord, how do you want us to approach You? - In a conversation with Denise about all this, she pointed out the context of **verse 11**. The prayer starts out with addressing our Father who is holy. Then it talks about the Father's kingdom coming and His will being done. So, the posture of the request for food is more about a humble request, not a demand. --- - 2020.02.17 [10] - The second phrase of the "Lord's Prayer is, "Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. - What does it mean for the Father's kingdom to "come"? - Come from where? - Come to where or to whom? - Why should we ask that His kingdom come? - How will His kingdom come? - The Greek word for "come" is erchomai ([[G2064]]). It is used 637 times and means "to come, go". None of the other translations use anything different except the NLT which adds "soon" after come. - There isn't anything obviously unusual about "come" in this usage - [[777]]--Lord, what do you want to say to me about all this? --- - 2019.01.01 [13] - See my note here dated 2014.02.08. Using Bible Hub, I determined that "[[Kingdom]]" included by BYZ and TR is in fact ([[G0932]]). [13] --- - 2015.09.18 [28-30] - Until today, I never noticed that all the translations talk about “lilies” as the flower in the field. I don’t know the exact significance of that flower. However, when I did a search of lily pictures, in all of them, the sexual organs are very prominent. In fact, in some varieties of lilies, the male stamen looks like an erect penis. In almost all of the varieties, the pistil (analogous to a woman’s vulva) is the most prominent. - [[777]] - Thank you Lord for this insight! Please forgive us for disobeying your command and worrying so much about clothing. What do you want me to do about all this and when do you want me to do it? --- - 2014.02.22 [10] - Speaker - [[Jesus]] - Audience - His [[Disciple|disciples]] and crowds on the [[Mountain]] side - Message - See note here dated 2014.02.08 and the - NET sn: Your [[Kingdom]] come represents the hope for the full manifestation of God’s promised [[Rule]]. --- - 2014.02.22 [31-33] - Speaker - Jesus - Audience - His disciples and crowds on the mountain side - Message - See note above and the NET sn: God’s [[Kingdom]] is a major theme of Jesus. It is a realm in which Jesus rules and to which those who trust him belong. --- - 2014.02.09 [31-33] - Jesus said we should pursue the Kingdom of God above all else, then everything else we need will be given to us as well. [[Kingdom]] is ([[G0932]]). --- - 2014.02.08 {9-15} - This is the Disciple's [[Pray|Prayer]] that Jesus taught them. In the **Matthew 6.10**, Jesus says, "may your [[Kingdom]] ([[G0932]]) come". - Some translations add at the end of **Matthew 6.13**, "for yours is the kingdom and the [[Power]] and the [[Glory]] [[Eternity|forever]], amen". I don't know what Greek word is used for kingdom here. It is reasonable to guess it is the same. However, it isn't one of the 162 occurrences in the NET. (See my note here dated 2019.01.01) --- - 2012.11.07 [19-24] - Looking at the Greek for the word, "lamp" I discovered that the lamp provides light to aid in showing the [[Body]] which way to move and turn. By comparing the [[Eye]] with a lamp, Jesus is saying that from a physical point of view, our eyes help us avoid obstacles as we move. - This observation agrees with the one here dated 2012.07.25. Our [[Worldview]] affects how we see things and how we react to the [[World]]. - [[777]] - Lord, I still feel that there is more you want to tell me about this [[Scripture|passage]].  Please make it clear to me. --- - 2012.07.25 [19-24] - It is through our "[[Eye|eyes]]" that we light up our [[Body|bodies]]. - I don't think Jesus was talking specifically about our sense of [[Vision]]. Otherwise, in this talk about [[Money]], He would have condemned blind people. In other passages, He makes it clear that being [[Blind]] is not a sin. - I think Jesus is talking about how we "see" the world. In other words, our "[[Worldview]]". If we look at everything as an opportunity to [[Glorify]] [[God]], then we will get lasting [[Treasure]]. On the other hand, if we look at how much (money) we will get, then our eyes are diseased and our body will be full of [[Darkness]]. (See The Message translation for a similar interpretation.) A way to look at this eye thing, is what "filter" do I put over my eye that colors how I see things. [[Philippians_04|Philippians 4.8]] tells us to focus / think on such things or see things as they really are instead of the way the culture sees them. - Although this passage is mainly about money, we could stretch it to how we look at the human [[Body]]. (This is a stretch, so I don't want to fall on my sword over this.) If we look at the human body as God's crowning [[Creation]], made in [[Image_of_God|His image]], then our body will be full of [[Light]]. On the other hand, if we look at it as bad and sinful, then our body will be full of darkness. - This is an incredibly powerful interpretation. I wonder how far a stretch it is? - [[777]] - Lord, thank you for this insight. I am giving you full credit. Please correct my misunderstandings. --- - 2012.05.03 [31-33] - In these verses, Jesus makes it clear we shouldn't worry about clothing. He even condemns those who pursue such things. --- - 2012.02.15 [28-30] - Jesus said that God "clothes" the wild grass and implied that the grass was clothed in more glory than [[Solomon]]. - An interesting thought ... I am not a [[Flowers|flower]] expert, so what I am about to say may be completely incorrect. However, my understanding is that the "[[Sex]] organs" in many flowers is prominently on display. (A quick check on Wikipedia confirmed my assumption.) - Since the "clothing" of the wild grass includes a prominent display of their reproductive organs and Jesus said that God would clothe us even more, then what does that say about our attempt to hide our reproductive organs? - Many times in the NT, we are commanded to clothe ourselves in various character traits. Nowhere that I can find are we commanded to clothe ourselves with textile articles, much less to hide certain body parts. - I suggest that Jesus is talking about two types of clothing in this paragraph; textile items to protect against the elements and character traits to display His glory. - Well, I just typed up some really cool stuff about the body of Christ and lost it all. I will try to recreate it again. - Jesus said that God would clothe us even more than Solomon. Because we are so focused on individualism, we usually think about being clothed as an individual. However, Jesus is Kingdom focused and body of Christ focused. An individual flower with its reproductive organs on display is certainly beautiful, but so is an entire field of flowers in the spring. In the later case, it is the collective variation and the effects of wind and light that bring out the beauty. - One of the most beautiful displays of God's glory is the fully functioning body of Christ clothed with the one-anothers. - [[777]] - Again, Lord, please continue to teach me about all this and reveal your glory to me. --- - 2012.02.13 [28-30] - It appears that Jesus is [[Teach|teaching]] that we shouldn't [[Worry]] about things. As an example, He says we shouldn't worry about [[Clothing_Textile_People|clothing]]. We should [[Trust]] that [[God]] will provide. - Again, it seems that Jesus validated the need for clothing. However, a key question has to do with the purpose of clothing. Many in our [[Culture]] and the [[Church]] insist that the purpose of clothing is to reduce [[Lust]]. However, Jesus seems to indicate in other verses that lust comes from our [[Heart|hearts]] and not from external stimuli. Additionally, there is adequate evidence that one of the main purposes of clothing is protection from the [[Environment]]. For example, even though I love to be [[Naked]], it was so cold yesterday, I did not want to go outside without gloves or a hat, much less without pants, shirt and coat. If we were poor, I could picture myself worrying about having to be outside without adequate clothing and getting very cold. - So, it seems one of the key points wrt to nudity and the [[Scripture|scriptures]] is the scriptural purpose of clothing. - In the [[End-Times|end-times]] discussions, clothing is mentioned a few times. I don't have those references handy. My assumption has been that those "clothes" refer to the "[[Blood]] of Christ" covering my [[Sin|sins]]. - Compare with the [[NAU_Study]] and the [[NAU]] topic - [[777]] - Lord, please continue to teach me and reveal Your [[Glory]] to me. --- - 2012.02.04 [25] - I wonder what was going on in the [[Culture]] at the time this was written that prompted [[Jesus]] to address [[Worry|worrying]] about [[Clothing_Textile_People|clothing]]. --- - 2012.02.04 [28-30] - Jesus compares how God clothes [[To_Clothe|clothes]] the [[Grass]] with how He will clothe us. In this comparison, He says that the grass is clothed by the [[Flowers]]. - [[777]] - Lord, please explain all this to me. --- - 2011.03.23 [25] - Jesus said we should not worry / be anxious about our [[Body]], what to wear. He went on to ask the question, isn't there more to the body than [[Clothing_Textile_People|clothing]]? - Since I don't want to take verses out of context, here are some observations on the verses in the same paragraph: - In **Matthew 6.28 - 30**, he goes on to explain what He means. - In **Matthew 6.32**, He implies we need clothing. On one level, we do need clothes to protect against the cold and other [[Environment|environmental]] situations such as [[Thorns|thorns]]. - Back to **Matthew 6.25**. What caught my attention initially, was the phrase, isn't there more to the body than clothing? Some of the other translations capture what I was feeling even better. - NIV - Is not ... the body more important than clothes? - MSG - There is ... more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. - Although [[Scripture]] never comes out and says that we should be free to be [[Naked]], there are lots of hints and this is a good one. - Compare with the [[NAU_Study]] and the [[NAU]] topic --- BIBLE STUDIES OTHER NOTES - Luke 11.1-13 [9-15] - Luke 12.22-31 [28-30] - Matthew 9.35 [31-33] - Luke 12.22-31 [31-33] - J-120421 [19-24] - J-131117 [31-33] - J-140217 [31-33] ---
