# Know the Trinity ## Background - 2023.05.13 - On 2015.02.19, I started a note to gather all the examples in the Bible of the Trinity. As of today there were only two entries, so I merged them into this study. - 2022.10.21 - As discussed above, this study initially started as the quest to "know Him who is from the beginning" and I had determined that the "Him" is Jesus - I think I want to broaden the study to "know the Trinity". - In light of this decision, this study will have lots of overlap with the [[Names_of_Jesus_Study]] [[Names_of_the_Father__Bible_Study]] - 2022.10.15 - Although this note is dated 2022.10.15, a lot of this stuff has been in the works for a long time. I hope to link in much of it as time goes on. - The original genesis for this goes back to the Strategy Coordinator (SC) training we did in 2017. At that time, I felt God talking with me about [[1_John_02#A New Commandment|1 John 2.12-14]] . Because we were focused on NPL and accomplishing the "goals" given to us by the [[NPL]] leadership, I viewed those verses through that lens. - However, since we left NPL and recovered from the effects of the "kool-aid", I now feel God telling me that He wants me to know Him. - Somewhere, I have a note saying that although I originally thought the "Him" in these verses referred to "God", I now believe the pronoun refers to Jesus. - ## Questions - Does the pronoun in [[1_John_02#A New Commandment|1 John 2.13 & 14]] refer to "God" or to Jesus? - What does it mean / look like to "know" Jesus? - Is there any connection with the secret things? See my notes there on this verse --- - [[Deuteronomy_32|Deuteronomy 32.26-27]] - What does the Bible mean when it says: - 26 I would have said that I would cut them to pieces and blot out their memory from mankind, 27 if I had not dreaded the taunt of the enemy, lest their adversaries misunderstand and say: ‘Our own hand has prevailed; it was not the LORD who did all this.’ ” - Does God dread? - [[Psalm_139|Psalm 139.17]] - 2022.10.21 - David said that God's thoughts are precious to him. - In my pursuit of the Trinity, I would say the same thing - Isaiah 11.1-3 - 2022.10.29 - I think most people assume the "shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse" that [[Isaiah_the_Prophet|Isaiah]] is talking about is [[Jesus_Attributes|Jesus]] {1} - If that is true, then several things get very messy - If the Lord in this passage is God the Father, then this passage says that Jesus delights in the fear of His Father {2-3} - If Jesus is [[God|God]] and Lord, then this passage says that Jesus delights in fearing Himself {2-3} - I think the following: - The "Lord" in this passage and probably most of the others strictly refers to [[God_the_Father|God-the-Father]] - Therefore, Jesus is a different entity than "[[Lord|Lord]]" - Jesus does in fact "fear" the Lord who is His Father - Compare with the [[Fear_Study]] - I think this adds another confirmation that [[Jesus_is_NOT_called_God_(NOJ)|Jesus is not called God]] --- - Matthew 1.25 - [[G1097]] --- - Matthew 3 - 2015.02.19 {16-17} - Jason pointed out that when Jesus came out of the water, the Spirit descended like a dove and the Father's voice spoke from heaven, all three were present --- - [[Matthew_05|Matthew 5]] - 2023.05.09 {8} - Context - Jesus' teaching on the Beatitudes - The sixth "blessed" says "Blessed ([[G3107]]) are the pure ([[G2513]]) in heart ([[G2588]], for they will see ([[G3708]]) God ([[G2316]])." - I want to "see" God because, I am assuming that to "see" Him is to "know" Him. I'll flex as needed if I find out my assumption is wrong - Based on the definition of horaó, it would seem my initial thinking was correct --- #### Matthew 7 - See my thoughts on being [[Known_by_Jesus|known by Jesus]] --- [[Matthew_11#Hidden Things Revealed|Matthew 11.25-27]] - Following Jesus condemnation of several cities in which He had done most of His miracles, He said some curious / difficult things. - **Verses 25-27** seem to support the predestination viewpoint - In those verses, He talked about hidden and revealed things. These verses seem to build on the ones in **Deuteronomy 29.29**. See [[2021.09.30.1410_Background_The Secret Things of the Lord_Bible_Study]] for more details about my quest. - Although many people find the predestination thing difficult to accept, I see it clearly explicitly delineated in Scripture. On the other hand, the opposite viewpoint of freewill can only be derived implicitly. - Unrelated, it appears, to the topics discussed above are the next three verses dealing with being weary and burdened. Jesus promises rest for our souls. The English word "virgin" actually comes from three Greek words - [[G0435]] - a man - [[G3756]] - not - [[G1097]] - I know? - This is a good example of the definition of [[G1097]] which refers to the intimate knowing of sexual intercourse Luke 6.43-45 - [[G1097]] {44} Luke 8.4-15 - [[G1097]] {10} Luke 8.16-18 - [[G1097]] {17} Luke 10.1-12 - be sure [[G1097]] {11} [[Luke_10|Luke 10.21-24]] - 2022.10.21 - Although this study has been focused on knowing Jesus as based on [[1_John_02|1 John 2.12-14]], I want to know the whole Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit - [[777]] - Jesus, please "choose" to "reveal" the Trinity to me - See my comments at [[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_DUPS/2021/2021.09.30.1410_The_Secret_Things_of_the_Lord_Bible_Study#Luke_10 Luke 10.21-24]] --- #### Luke 13 - See my thoughts on being [[Known_by_Jesus|known by Jesus]] --- - John 4 - 2015.02.20 {23-24} - Jesus is the "truth" (John 14.6) so all three are present in these statements ### John 1 {1-14} #### John 17 2024.01.19 - Context - In **chapter 17**, John records Jesus' prayer for Himself, His disciples and all people {[[John_17|John 17]]} - Based on **verse 1**, John said that Jesus was praying to His Father - Thoughts - In **verse 3**, Jesus defined eternal life as knowing: {[[John_17|John 17.3]]; [[G0166]]; [[G2222]]; [[G1097]]; [[G0228]]; [[G2316]];} - The Father, the only true God - Jesus Christ, whom God the Father sent - So, to say it again, eternal life is to know God the Father and Jesus, His Son ### 1 Corinthians 8 {4} [[1_Corinthians_13|1 Corinthians 13.12]] - 2025.02.25 - Compare with the [[Great_Commandment_Study]] - 2022.10.17 - The four occurrences of "child" and one of "childish" are all the same Greek word, [[G3516]]. These are different than the [[G5040|little children]] and [[G3813|children]], in [[1_John_02#A New Commandment|1 John 2.12-14]] - Paul makes it clear that no amount of knowledge can take the place of "love". However, it is important to look at this in context. The surrounding section headings and applicable chapter / verses are shown below: - Food Sacrificed to Idols {8.1-13} - The Rights of an Apostle {9.1-18} - Paul the Servant to All {9.19-23} - Run Your Race to Win {9.24-27} - Warnings from Israel’s Past {10.1-13} - Flee from Idolatry {10.14-22} - All to God’s Glory {10.23-33} - Roles in Worship {11.1-16} - Sharing in the Lord’s Supper {11.17-34} - [[1_Corinthians_12#Spiritual Gifts|Spiritual Gifts]] {12.1-11} - [[1_Corinthians_12#The Body of Christ|The Body of Christ]] {12.12-26} - [[1_Corinthians_12#The Greater Gifts|The Greater Gifts]] {12.27-31} - [[1_Corinthians_13#Love|Love]] {13.1-13} - [[1_Corinthians_14#Prophecy and Tongues|Prophecy and Tongues]] {14.1-25} - [[1_Corinthians_14#Orderly Worship|Orderly Worship]] {14.26-40} - It seems clear that Paul is emphasizing that it is all about God as well as interpersonal relationships within the church. So, I think the emphasis on "love" is making sure we know that we must "love" each other and not get wrapped up in all the stuff he discusses in these chapters - On the other hand, in this season of my life, I am focusing on loving and knowing God and Jesus. I am not suggesting that I am doing that at the exclusion of loving other people. I think it is a both-and not an either-or. [[Philippians_03|Philippians 3.1-11]] - 2022.10.20 - I agree with Paul on both thoughts - Knowing Jesus is better than anything in the universe {8} - I also want to know Jesus "and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to Him in His death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead." {10-11} - These verses amplify why I am on this quest - The "knowing" in **verse 8** is [[G1108]]. It refers to experiential personal knowledge. This sounds a lot like some of the MSR to include Crossbridge today that emphasizes woowoo Spiritual experiences. On the other hand, I am striving to ensure that my "knowledge" of Jesus is 100% consistent with the scriptures. ### 1 Timothy 2 {5} ### Titus 2 {13} ### James 2 {19} [[1_John_02#A New Commandment|1 John 2.12-14]] - 2022.10.17 - The Greek word [[G1097]] used in these verses translated "to know": - implies an intimate knowledge such as sexual intercourse - It also implies a relationship between the person "knowing" and the object known - Bottom-line, I want to know God, the Father and His Son, Jesus, my Savior in a way that is consistent with [[G1097]] - 2022.10.21 - As I was continuing to study this passage, I noticed three occurrences of the phrase "of God" in this chapter. - love of God {5} - But if anyone keeps His word, the love [[G2316|of God]] has been truly perfected in him {5} - word of God {14} - and the [[G3056|word]] [[G2316|of God]] abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one {14} - will of God {17} - but whoever does the will [[G2316|of God]] remains forever {17} - I need to meditate on this for a while - [[777]] - Lord, please speak to me about this
