# Honor Parents Bible Study ## Background - Started 2021.09.19 - G & P are studying Genesis with their group. Recently, they studied **Genesis 9** about the sin of Ham. They concluded that the whole story was really about [[Honor|honoring]] our parents. - Their interpretation seems good. However, I wanted to do a deeper dive into scripture. So, I plan to look at various passages in both the OT and NT. ## Questions - What does the Bible say about honoring our [[Parents]]? - What are the benefits of [[Obey|obedience]]? - What are the consequences of disobedience? - What is honor and what does "honoring" look like? ## ToDo ### ToDo Study #### Passages to Study - Proverbs 1.8-9 - Proverbs 6.20 - Proverbs 10.1 - Proverbs 13.1 - Proverbs 15.20 - Proverbs 17.6 - Proverbs 20.20 - Proverbs 23.22 - Proverbs 30.11, 17 - Malachi 1.6 - Malachi 4.5-6 - Matthew 10.35-37 - Luke 2.51 - Luke 14.26 - Acts 5.29 - 1 Timothy 5.1, 8 - 2 Timothy 3.1-5 ### Other - Compare with [[Respect_Honor_Glorify_Gods_Name_Study]] - See 2021.09.19.0541 - Honor Parents for more thoughts - H3513 - Start with 2 Chronicles ## tl;dr - Noah punished Ham for dishonoring him by cursing Ham's son, thus taking away the honor Ham could have received from his son {Genesis 9} ## Chapter-by-Chapter Notes --- ### Genesis 1 #### Context {0} - Intro {1-2} - The First Day {3-5} - The Second Day {6-8} - The Third Day {9-13} - The Fourth Day {14-19} - The Fifth Day{20-23} - The Sixth Day {24-31} #### 2026.04.05 {26-29} - As our creator, God is our parent and we should honor Him primarily by obeying His commands - The first command from God to mankind was in the form of a blessing - God blessed them - be fruitful - multiply - fill the earth - subdue it - rule over - fish - birds - every creature - Until today, I had not noticed that God's command to be fruitful was wrapped in a blessing - I guess it is possible that this blessing wrapper in **Genesis 1** is the reason the only commandment of the ten commandments with a promise is the one about honoring our parents (See Exodus 20.12 below) --- ### Genesis 2 #### Context {0} - The Seventh Day {1-3} - Man and Woman in the Garden {4-25} #### 2026.04.05 {24} - In order to honor our Creator / Spiritual Father by obeying His command to be fruitful and multiply, we need leave our physical father and mother and start the next generation - See my notes on Genesis 1. --- ### Genesis 9 #### Context {0} - The Covenant of the Rainbow {1-17} - Noah’s Shame and Canaan’s Curse {18-28} #### 2026.04.05 {20-25} - In light of my comments about the connections between Genesis 1.28, Genesis 2.24, Exodus 20.12 & Deuteronomy 5.16 recorded below on Exodus 20 this story makes a lot more sense now - God repeated the blessing and command to “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth." This repetition connects with the blessing, honor and promises {1} - In this story, Ham dishonored his father {22} - On the other hand, Shem and Japheth honored their father {23} - Noah punished Ham by cursing Ham's son, Canaan. Thus, Noah took away the honor Ham could have received from Canaan - The punishment Noah dealt out fit the crime perfectly --- ### Genesis 34 #### Context {0} #### Date {19} --- ### Exodus 14 #### Context {0} #### Date {4, 17, 18} --- ### Exodus 20 #### Context {0} - The Ten Commandments {1-17} - Moses Comforts the People {18-26} #### 2026.04.05 {12} - My thoughts on the 10C's haven't changed since I recorded them on 2024.06.24. See [[Thoughts_on_the_10_Commandments]]. However, I do believe that although as Christians we are not bound by the 10-C's as a "law," there are good principles for all of us to follow. For example, some of the passages in the NT for this study repeat those principles. - One of the key principles in this passage is the very object of this study; the command to " [[Honor|honor"]] our parents. - In this passage, the English word, "honor" is the Hebrew word "kabad" which occurs 115 times and has the Strong's number, [[H3513]] - Tying together Genesis 1.28, Genesis 2.24, Exodus 20.12 & Deuteronomy 5.16 - In order to honor our spiritual Father, we need to obey His commands, in particular to multiply and fill the earth - God "wrapped" the command to multiply with a blessing {Genesis 1.22} - A necessary step in multiplying is leaving our physical father and mother and uniting with a wife. We actually honor our parents when we step out on our own and start our own family - God promised that if the Israelites honored their parents - Their days would be long in the land He was giving them {Exodus 20.12, Deuteronomy 5.16} - It would go well with them {Deuteronomy 5.16} - The promises in Exodus 20.12 & Deuteronomy 5.16 tie back to the blessing in Genesis 1.28 --- ### Exodus 21 #### Context {0} #### Date {15, 17} --- ### Leviticus 10 #### Context {0} #### Date {3} --- - Leviticus 19.3, 32 - Leviticus 20.9 - Leviticus 21.11 --- ### Numbers 22 #### Context {0} #### Date {15, 17-x2, 37} --- ### Numbers 24 #### Context {0} #### Date {11-x2} --- ### Deuteronomy 5 #### Context {0} - The Covenant at Horeb {1-4} - The Ten Commandments {5-21} - Moses Intercedes for the People {22-33} #### 2026.04.05 {16} - As the fifth of the ten commandments, this is the main verse where we are commanded to " [[Honor|honor"]] ([[H3513]]) our parents. - See **Exodus 20.12** above for my thoughts on this passage --- ### Deuteronomy 21 #### Context {0} #### Date {18-21} --- ### Deuteronomy 27 #### Context {0} #### Date {16} --- ### Deuteronomy 28 #### Context {0} #### Date {58} --- ### Judges 9 #### Context {0} #### Date {9} --- ### Judges 13 #### Context {0} #### Date {17} --- ### 1 Samuel 2 #### Context {0} #### Date {30-x2} --- ### 1 Samuel 9 #### Context {0} #### Date {6} --- ### 1 Samuel 15 #### Context {0} #### Date {30} --- ### 1 Samuel 22 #### Context {0} #### Date {14} --- ### 2 Samuel 6 #### Context {0} #### Date {20, 22} --- ### 2 Samuel 10 #### Context {0} #### Date {3} --- ### 2 Samuel 23 #### Context {0} #### Date {19, 23} --- ### 1 Chronicles 4 #### Context {0} #### Date {9} --- ### 1 Chronicles 11 #### Context {0} #### Date {21, 25} --- ### 1 Chronicles 19 #### Context {0} #### Date {3} --- --- ### Matthew 15 #### Context {0} - The Tradition of the Elders {1-9} - What Defiles a Man {10-20} - The Faith of the Canaanite Woman {21-28} - The Feeding of the Four Thousand {29-39} #### 2026.04.10 {1-9} - The context of this passage is Jesus confrontation with the Pharisees and scribes about tradition {1-9} - Jesus used an example from the [[10-Commandments]] about honoring parents to address their emphasis of traditions over the commands of God - This NT example shows one aspect of honoring parents by taking care of them financially - Jesus then turned the focus to His Father and condemned the elders for failing to honor their Creator {7-9} - I am guessing that Jesus' emphasis on the 5th Commandment has to do with honoring His Father {7-9} - There are three occurrences of ([[G5091]]) in this passage {4, 6, 8} --- ### Matthew 19 #### Context {0} - Teachings about Divorce {1-12} - Jesus Blesses the Children {13-15} - The Rich Young Man {16-30} #### 2026.04.10 {19} - As Jesus addressed various theological errors with the rich young man, He listed off several of the [[10-Commandments]] all of which dealt with people-to-people relationships. One of the ones He listed had to do with honoring father and mother. {18-19} --- ### Mark 7 #### Context {0} - The Tradition of the Elders {1-13} - What Defiles a Man {14-23} - The Faith of the Gentile Woman {24-30} - The Deaf and Mute Man {31-37} #### 2026.04.10 {1-13} - This passage is very similar to **Matthew 15.1-9**. See my comments above {1-13} --- ### Mark 10 #### Context {0} - Teachings about Divorce {1-12} - Jesus Blesses the Children {13-16} - The Rich Young Man {17-31} - The Third Prediction of the Passion {32-34} - The Request of James and John {35-45} - Jesus Heals Bartimaeus {46-52} #### 2026.04.13 {19} - See my notes on Matthew 19.19 above --- ### Luke 18 #### Context {0} #### 2026.04.13 {20} - See my notes on Matthew 19.19 above --- ### John 5 #### Context {0} #### Date {23-x4} --- ### John 8 #### Context {0} #### Date {49} --- ### John 12 #### Context {0} #### Date {26} --- ### Acts 28 #### Context {0} #### Date {10} --- ### Ephesians 6 #### Context #### 2026.04.09 {1} - Compare with Colossians 3.18 - If Paul meant for both of them to be similar, then the Colossians version seems to clarify the meaning of "in the Lord." In other words, it is about honoring our spiritual Father, our Creator and not some woo-woo spiritual parent/children thing! #### 2026.04.08 {1-4} - Paul had a few things to say about the relationship between children and their parents - He told [[Child|children]] ([[G5043]]) to [[Obey|obey]] [[G5219]] their [[Parents|parents]] (G1118) "in the Lord" {1} - Then he repeated the 5th commandment that commanded children to [[Honor|honor]] ([[G5091]]) your [[father]] ([[G3962]]) and [[mother]] ([[G3384]]) {2-3} - I have a few unanswered questions - Since Paul ended the first command with "in the Lord," was he referring to "spiritual" children or natural children? Compare with Colossians 3.18 {1} - Since Paul had two back-to-back quotes was he just emphasizing the importance of obedience and honoring, or were they addressing two different sets of "parents?" {1-3} - However, since the next verse addressed fathers and not two different categories of fathers, I am leaning toward interpreting all three references as natural parents {1-4} --- ### Colossians 3 #### Context {0} - Put On the New Self {1-20} - Christian Households {18-21} - Serving with Honor {22-25} #### 2026.04.09 {18-20} - The phase "as is fitting in the Lord" in verse 18 is somewhat similar to "in the Lord for this is right" in **Ephesians 6.1**. See my thoughts above on Ephesians 6.1 - This whole section is quite powerful and applicable to this study - Paul told wives to [[Submit|submit]] ([[G5293]]) to their husbands {18} - Paul told children to [[Obey|obey]] {[[G5219]]} their parents {20} --- ### 1 Peter 2 #### Context #### Date {17} --- ### 1 Peter 5 #### Context #### Date {5-6} ---
