# Holy Spirit Bible Study

## Background
- Started - 2016.01.11
- 2017.11.17 - Merged “Baptism in the [[Holy Spirit]]” into this study. That study was started on 2015.03.01.

## Questions
- Are there / what are simple, reproducible and trainable ways to listen to and obey the Holy Spirit’s leading?
- What gets in the way of hearing the Holy Spirit’s leading?
- What hinders the Holy Spirit?
- What changes do we need to make to our “methods” to facilitate hearing and obeying the HS?
- What is the role of the Holy Spirit in:
- Envision
- Engage the World
- Evangelize the Lost
- Equip Disciples
- Establish Churches
- Abide in Christ
- How should I relate to You, Holy Spirit?
- What does it mean to be "filled with the Holy Spirit"? (There are 2630 occurrences in the Bible.) Is it a one-time thing for all time, or is the filling a short-term thing for a specific purpose?
- Is it appropriate to address the Holy Spirit directly in prayer, or should I pray to the Father or Jesus?
- What does the Bible say about baptism in the Holy Spirit?
- Is there any difference between being “filled” with the Holy Spirit and “baptized” in the the Holy Spirit?
- Look at how the Holy Spirit (comes upon) rolls out from Jerusalem to the Gentiles. Compare it to the command in **Acts 1.8**.
- Is there anything unique in these initial experiences with the Holy Spirit?
- What is the nature of the Spirit in the OT compared with the Holy Spirit in the NT?
- What is the connection between the Holy Spirit and the “Spirit of Jesus” or the Spirit of His Son or the “Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead or the “Spirit of truth”, Spirit of wisdom?
- Also, look at “full of the Spirit”
- Pam suggested that the "anointing oil" ([[H8081]]) is analogous for the Holy Spirit. What is the basis for that thesis? See also **Matthew 25.1-13**
- What does the Bible say about the Holy Spirit being a "comforter?"

## TL;DR
### Spirit Summary
- See [[Spirit_Summary]] for a comprehensive list of the "spirit" occurrences in the Bible.
### Other
- We can’t rub the lamp to get the genie out. God shows up when it is optimal for His plan. {Acts 8.12-23}
- Sometimes, the Holy Spirit shows up as a rebuke for disobedience { Acts 8.12-23}
- There is clearly a connection between obedience and the HS’s power {Acts 8.4, 7, 26-39}
- The Holy Spirit is a gift. {Luke 11.13, John 20.22, Acts 1.4, Acts 2.38-39, Acts 5.32, Acts 8.20}
- Significant manifestations were initially necessary to establish the Apostle’s creds {Acts 2} and to convince them to take the gospel beyond Jerusalem {Acts 4 and Acts 9}
- It is possible “Judea” was skipped in the significant Holy Spirit events because it was filled with Jews and they had already experienced / rejected the Holy Spirit
- The same Hebrew word, “eh-yeh” ([[H1961]]) is used for “I AM” in Exodus and for the “Let there be” in the creation passages and later for the Holy Spirit coming upon people. The word was also used 33-times in the creation account in **Genesis 1 & 2**. {**Genesis 1 & 2, Exodus 3.14, Numbers 24.2, Judges 3.10, Judges 11.29, 1 Samuel 19.20 & 23, 2 Chronicles 15.1, 2 Chronicles 20.14}
- We need to confess our sins to enable hearing the HS (@@ need verses @@)
- We need to give the Holy Spirit freedom to say and do things that we don’t expect and are not comfortable hearing / doing (@@ need verses @@)
- From [Prayer Bible Study](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JbLU8HWBAIAdSvT_0Q8t-WYes3NPM_w9Ahcq9Kz4OvU/edit#): The Greek words for “persistence” and the “receives” have a consistent theme. Shamelessly asking and aggressively laying hold of what is offered. In this context what is offered is the Holy Spirit! {Luke 11.8, 10, 13}
- The Spirit of the Lord placed ([[H5414]]) / rested ([[H5117]]) / came ([[H1961]]) / clothed ([[H3847]]) / stir ([[H6470]]) His servants before they did anything great:
- The seventy elders prophesied {Numbers 11.25, 26, 29}
- Othniel {Judges 3.9-10}
- Balaam lifted up his third oracle {Numbers 24.2}
- Jephthah before he defeated the Ammonites {Judges 11.29}
- The Spirit of the Lord began to stir Samson at Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol {Judges 13.25}
- The Spirit of the Lord rushed upon Samson and he tore the lion apart. {Judges 14.5-6}
- After Samson's bride to be enticed the riddle out of him and told it to her family, the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him and he killed 30 men from Ashkelon, took their clothing and give it to those who solved the riddle. {Judges 14.17-19}
- The Spirit of the Lord rushed upon Samson and he killed 1000 men with the jawbone of a donkey {Judges 15.14-16}
- Matthew 10.20 is another example of the Spirit coming from Father. {Matthew 10.20}
- So far, none of these examples explicitly say that the "Spirit of Father" is the same as the "Holy Spirit." {Matthew 10.20}
- Father invented (Just in Time) JIT {Matthew 10.19}
- The "spirit" of Jesus is not capitalized in the translations in BibleHub except Acts 16.7
- 14 of the 23 occurrences of "spirit" in Mark relate to "unclean spirits" {Mark 0}

- Samuel said Saul would be transformed into a different person. This sounds a lot like [[2_Corinthians_05|2 Corinthians 5.17]] [6]
- In **verse 6**, Samuel said, “of Yahweh” ([[H3068]]). In **verse 10**, he said, “of God” ([[H0430]]) [6, 10]
- 2019.01.04
- Samuel told Saul that he would prophesy when the Spirit of the Lord rushes upon him [6]
- God changed Saul's heart before the Spirit rushed upon him and before Saul did anything [9]
- When Saul arrived in Giveah, a group of prophets met him as Samuel had prophesied. Then the Spirit of God rushed upon him and Saul prophesied too. [10]

- When Saul heard about the plight of Jabesh-gilead, the Spirit of God rushed upon him and he burned with anger [6]
- Apparently, Samuel wanted to communicate that Saul was angry. He used three words: [6]
- The verb ([[H2734]]) which means to burn or be kindled with anger
- The noun ([[H0639]]) which is translated into some form of anger 213 times
- The adjective ([[H3966]]) which means muchness, force, abundance
- This motivated him to take action, rally all of Israel and defeat Nahash thus confirming his calling as king. [7-15]

- [[1_Samuel_16|1 Samuel 16]]

- Throughout many of the OT book, there is a phrase something like, "the Lord said". In **1 Samuel 16**, it occurs 4 times in **verses 1, 2, 7 & 12**. In each of these, "Lord" is Yahweh ([[H3068]]). [0]
- Yahweh ([[H3068]]) occurs 16 times in 1 Samuel 16
- How did Samuel "hear" the Lord?
- Are these examples of a Christophany?
- Did the Holy Spirit speak to Samuel?
- **Verses 13 & 14** specifically mention the "Spirit of the Lord". Is that different than "the Lord"?
- Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David, then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David [13]
- Unlike the previous examples I have studies, **verse 13** says about the Spirit, "from that day ([[H3117]]) forward ([[H4605]])" [13]
- **Verse 18** says the Lord is with David [18]
- The next verse says that the "Spirit of the Lord" departed from Saul [14]
- **Verses 14, 15, 16 & 23** refer to "a spirit of distress from the Lord" tormenting Saul. **Verse 23** refers to the same "spirit" but calls it a "spirit from God". What is the difference between these and the good "Spirit of the Lord"? [14, 15, 16 & 23]
- Lord [1, 2-x2, 4, 5, 6, 7-x2, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14-x2, 18] = [[H3068]]

- Context
- David went to war for Saul and struck the Philistines with a mighty blow. Then a spirit of distress from the Lord came upon Saul and he attempted to kill David [8-10]
- Saul continued to pursue David and Michal saved David and he escaped to Naioth in Ramah. So Saul sent messengers to capture him, but the messengers would prophecy instead. Finally, Saul went and he too prophesied [11-24]
- The Spirit of God came upon Saul's messengers and they began to prophesy [21]
- The second and third set of messengers also prophesied, but the Bible doesn't mention the Spirit of God coming upon them. Perhaps it is assumed?? [21]
- Finally, Saul went.
- The Spirit of God came upon him [23]
- Saul walked around prophesying until he came to Naioth in Ramah [23]
- Then Saul stripped off his robes and prophesied before Samuel [24]
- He collapsed and lay naked all day and night [24]
- People said, "Is Saul among the prophets"? [24]

### 1 Kings 19
#### Context
- Elijah flees from Jezebel [1-8]
- The Lord speaks to Elijah at Horeb [9-18]
#### Spirit Summary
#### 2019.01.06
- The "Lord said" [11, 15]
- What does it mean for the Lord to be in /not in the wind, earthquake or fire? [11-12]
- When Elijah stood by the mountain and the Lord passed by, it is similar to God showing His glory to Moses [11-13]
- Elijah heard the still small voice (whisper). So it seems that God spoke to Elijah in an audible voice [12, 13]
- 2016.03.18
- An angel / angel of the Lord came to Elijah and provided food and drink that was sufficient for a 40-day journey. [5, 7]
- ’m pretty sure that angels and the HS are different. However, there has to be some sort of connection. [5, 7]
- What is the connection between the HS and “the word of the Lord”? [9-10]
- Assuming the Lord / God is triune, then somehow the HS is connected with this event. [9-10]
- First, God told Elijah to go stand before Him on the mountain [11]
- Next, the Lord passed by him [11]
- Then, there were three events in which the Lord was not in (windstorm, earthquake & fire) [11-13]
- Finally, He was in a still small voice. [12]
- I never noticed before that Elijah had already been conversing with God prior to the whisper (see **1 Kings 19.9-11**) [11-13]
- I’m not sure how to sort out all this. [11-13]

### Isaiah 11
#### 2023.03.23 {1-2}
- As mentioned below, this chapter is about Jesus. Taken together with Isaiah 42, it would seem that God will put His Spirit on Jesus. What's confusing is the singular nature of the Spirit in chapter 42 and the plural (seven Spirits) mentioned in chapter 11 as well as Revelation 1.
- For the longest time, I struggled with seeing more than six Spirits in this passage. However, after several convos with others, I think the "seventh" is actually the first mentioned, "The Spirit of the Lord." Previously, I "assumed" the 6 that followed were "characteristics" of the Spirit of the Lord. However, based on Revelation 1.4, I think the following seven separate entities should be considered:
- The Spirit of the LORD
- the Spirit of wisdom
- the Spirit of understanding
- the Spirit of counsel
- the Spirit of strength
- the Spirit of knowledge
- the Spirit of the fear of the LORD

- Spirit [15] = [[H7307]]
- Is poured {15}
- [[H6168]] means to be naked or bare
- So, a literal translation could be: "... until the Spirit it naked / bare upon us ..."
- Verse 15 is in the context of verse 11 where Isaiah told the "ladies of leisure" and "daughters of complacency" to "Strip yourselves bare and put sackcloth around your waists"
- Whether literal or figurative, I have no idea what Isaiah is communicating
- Other translations
- till the Spirit is poured on us from on high (NIV, ESV, BSB, KJB, NASB, LSB, CSB, MSB)
- KJB & CSB have slightly different wording, but close enough
- until at last the Spirit is poured out on us from heaven (NLT)
- This desolation will continue until new life is poured out on us from heaven (NET)

#### 2017.08.08
- John said Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire [11]
- John further discusses the fire part by saying that the chaff will be burned with unquenchable fire. [12]
- The “Spirit of God” descended like a dove and rested on Jesus and a voice from heaven spoke. All three of the trinity were present at the baptism. [16-17]
- Based on the juxtaposition, it is reasonable to conclude that the “Holy Spirit” and the “Spirit of God” are the same. Also, the same Strong's Greek word [[G4151]] is used in both places. However, I need to keep researching that assumption. [11 & 16]

#### 2016.03.13
- Although the Holy Spirit is not mentioned in these verses, they came to mind when I was praying about listening to the Holy Spirit. {9-13, 33}
- Perhaps Jesus gave us the “key” through these verses. We need to:
- honor the Father in heaven
- acknowledge that it is God’s Kingdom, not ours
- pray for and actually want God’s will (instead of mine) to be be done [10]
- focus on doing God’s will instead of filling our bellies ([**John 4.34**](#6x8rj9j1hkvu), [**Matthew 6.33**](#8lk75go1yoj6)) [11]
- confess our sins to God and others [12]
- forgive others [12]
- One question / problem with this “solution to hearing from the Holy Spirit” is that it is all us talking to God and no listening [9-13]

- This is another example of the Spirit coming from Father. {20}
- So far, none of these examples explicitly say that the "Spirit of Father" is the same as the "Holy Spirit." {20}
- Father invented (Just in Time) JIT {19}
#### 2026.01.20 {19-20}
- As a part of the mission briefing before sending out the 12, Jesus told them not to "worry about how to respond or what to say."
- He continued by telling them that it would not be them speaking, but rather, "it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit ([[G4151]]) of your Father ([[G3962]]) speaking through you."
- This is another example of the Spirit coming from Father.
- So far, none of these examples explicitly say that the "Spirit of Father" is the same as the "Holy Spirit."
- In typical God fashion, Jesus told the 12, "In that hour you will be given what to say." It will be "in that hour" not in advance. I guess it could be said that God invented (Just in Time) JIT.

- hidden these things from the wise and learned

- Among other topics, Jesus Promised to send the Holy Spirit and He taught His disciples more about the Holy Spirit {15-26}
- Jesus connected "the Advocate" with "the Holy Spirit" in verse 26 {26}
- Jesus said: {26}
- the Father will send the Advocate / Holy Spirit in Jesus' name
- the Advocate / Holy Spirit will:
- teach the disciples all things
- remind the disciples of everything Jesus told them

### John 15

#### 2026.03.25 {18-27}
- Context - Jesus is teaching His disciples about their relationship with the world
- In the last paragraph, Jesus discussed the disciples' partner, the Spirit of truth
- Jesus made it clear by repeating it:
- He (Jesus) is sending the Spirit of truth
- Although Jesus is "sending" the Spirit of truth, this Spirit comes from the Father
- Jesus wrapped up this section with a command to the disciples that they must testify about Him since they had been with him from the beginning.
- An interesting observation:
- In this chapter, Jesus refers to "My Father" 6 times
- However, when speaking about the origin of the Spirit of truth, Jesus refers to the origin as "the Father"
- I don't know if there is any significance, but wanted to record the observation

- Jesus said that unless He went away, the Advocate would not come {7}
- On the other hand if He went, then He (Jesus) will send the Advocate {7}
- When the Advocate came He had an assignment: convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment {8}
##### the Spirit of Truth {12-14}

- See [[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_NOTES/2022.12.01.1457]] for my thoughts on the book of Acts being a history book with no commands for the Apostles or for us today {8}
#### 2017.11.19
- Despite [[Philip|Philip's]] lack of proper Holy Spirit [[Train|training]] training, he was [[Obey|obedient]] and went to [[Samaria]] (**Acts 8.5**). As a result, the Holy Spirit showed up big time [7, 17]
- It is interesting that Philip, one of the [[Seven|seven]] [[Deacon|deacons]], wasn’t properly trained in [[Baptism|baptism]]. [15-17]
- Why did this story happen this way? A theory of mine: [15-17]
- Jesus told the [[Apostle|apostles]] to be His [[Witness|witnesses]] in [[Jerusalem_(Current-Original)|Jerusalem]], [[Judea]], [[Samaria]] and the [[Ends_of_the_Earth|ends of the earth]] {Acts 1.8}
- The apostles weren’t being obedient {Acts 8.1}
- Although Philip was being obedient [**Acts 8.5**], God wanted to ensure the apostles got it. So He waited to give the Holy Spirit until [[Peter_(Bible_Character)|Peter]] showed up.
- In some respects, the HS arrival in this story was a [[Rebuke|rebuke]] to the apostles that they didn’t go as [[Command|commanded]] and that they hadn’t properly trained the deacons.
- If my theory is correct, then we can’t rub the lamp to get the genie out. God shows up when it is optimal for His plan. The story of [[Simon (Acts 8)|Simon’s]] desire for the Holy Spirit’s power would seem to confirm my observation [18-23)]
- No major manifestation recorded by [[Luke_Author|Luke]]. However, **Acts 8.17** says they received the Holy Spirit. So, there must have been some sort of “[[Signs_and_Wonders|sign]]” that Simon was willing to pay for [17, 18]
- First time Holy Spirit in Samaria [14-17]
#### 2016.03.23
- Although not attributed to the Holy Spirit, it seem obvious that the Holy Spirit showed up big time as a result of Philip’s obedience [4, 7].
- Philip continued to be obedient and was sent on a mission to an [[Ethiopia|Ethiopian]] [26]
- While on mission, he [[Listen|listened]] and obeyed the Holy Spirit [29]
- No mention of whether Philip baptized him in the Holy Spirit [38]

- It is interesting that after Paul was saved, he was debating with the Grecian Jews and they tried to kill him. I am curious why he didn't debate with the Pharisees since he himself was a Pharisee. [29]
- After Paul was converted and was sent away to Tarsus, the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria experienced a time of peace. Among other things, they lived in the "encouragement ([[G3784]]) of the Holy Spirit" [31]
- Other translations of "encouragement" [31]

- Barnabas was “full of the Holy Spirit” and through his encouragement, many came to the Lord. [24]
- Again, Luke doesn’t mention water baptism or baptism in the Holy Spirit for the new converts. However, Luke repeats Peter's story where Peter quoted Jesus in saying, "John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." The Greek word translated baptized is the same in both occurrences ([[G0907]]) {16, 22-24}

- Context - In this section, Paul contrasts walking by the Spirit with gratifying the desires of the flesh [16-26]
- Paul told the Galatians:
- To walk by the Spirit [16]
- The flesh and the Spirit crave things that are opposite of each other [17]
- We don't do what we want [17]
- If they are led by the Spirit, they are not under the Law. The context of the whole book of Galatians is Paul disputing those who say they have to live under the law. [18]
- The acts of the flesh are obvious and the serious consequence for practicing them is failure to inherit the kingdom of God. [19-21]
- On the other hand, the fruit of the Spirit is good stuff. [22-23]
- Paul again contrasts living by the Spirit with being under the Law [23]
- Finally, Paul makes some challenging statements:
- For those of us who belong to Jesus, we have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires [24]
- Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit [25]

### Revelation 1
#### 2026.03.23 {4, 10}
- In John's salutation to the seven churches, it seems that he followed some sort of memo type organization {4}
- He identified that he was the person who penned the "memo / letter"
- He stated that the memo / letter was to the seven churches in the province of Asia
- He identified several entities from whom the content of the memo / letter came (apparently not John)
- Him who is and was and is to come
- the seven spirits before His throne
- Jesus Christ
- the faithful witness
- the firstborn from the dead
- the ruler of the kings of the earth
- As far as I am aware, there isn't anything else in Revelation that provides additional insight into the "seven spirits" before God's throne {4}
- However, most of the commentaries point to **Isaiah 11.2** for the 'names' of the seven Spirits
- John claims that he received the download for this letter "on the Lord’s day he was in the Spirit." Again, there doesn't seem to be any contextual / amplifying info about being in the Spirit. Some questions: {10}
- Is John referring to:
- the "seven Spirits?"
- Or a singular Spirit entity (the Holy Spirit)?
- Or to a different spirit entity?
- What did he mean / what does it look like to "be in the Spirit?"

- During goal setting give people 60 seconds of silence to listen to the Holy Spirit. This happens in the context of the commands of Christ in the Bible and provides a safe introduction to hearing the leading of the Holy Spirit. You can expand on this foundation by including listening prayer during house of peace searches etc.
- Depending on how we set up the HoP search we may ask:
- Who should we be prepared to meet?
- Where should we go?
- What story of hope should we be prepared to share?
- We have some crazy testimonies of the Holy Spirit telling us beforehand the names of people we will meet, what they would be wearing, what they need prayer for etc. (like Acts 9:10)
- After an encounter we may ask:
- What did you think of that encounter?
- Did you get any impressions from the Holy Spirit?
- Etc.
- We teach people to test everything and hold fast to what is good. If they get an impression that does bear fruit we want them to remember it. If they get an impression that does not bear fruit we want them to hold it suspect.
- If someone says, "God told me (xyz)" we ask, "What are you going to do about that?" or "How is this going to change your life?"
- I have some 3/3rds studies on this too
- If you think it's the Holy Spirit, and if could see Jesus doing it, and at this point you don't know of a biblical reason not to do it, obey!

- [[Name_Key#^nk-13|M]] - Interesting question. Prayer, thoughtfully reading the Word, quiet time alone, waiting to hear from Holy Spirit, choosing to truly model Jesus' life in our own lives ... the Word mentions many ways. But I don't think there is a "tried and true" formula necessarily. Also writing down dreams if we hear Holy Spirit speaking to us as we sleep and dream. But I'm also convinced that it is rare for people to hear from the Lord, if they're convinced it cannot happen - through a lack of faith. Not impossible, but rare. In the book of Revelation, Jesus says, "Behold I stand at the door and knock, and if any man hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and sup with him, and he with me." Also, the prophet Joel said (and was quoted in the book of **Acts 2:17**), "‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams;'" These are prophecies, visions, and dreams, that we will receive and hear from Holy Spirit and, like Jesus, we shall only see and speak those things we hear from the Lord of Hosts.

- [[Name_Key#^nk-14|F]] - I agree with [[Name_Key#^nk-16|M]]...prayer, spending time in the Word, and just being open to hearing His voice. I know the Holy Spirit speaks to me in the smallest of things to the greatest. I'm familiar with His voice and completely trust Him. The more I follow His guidance, the more apt I am to continue to recognize His voice again. I thank Him for being the Comforter.
