In **1 Samuel 16**, it occurs 4 times in **verses 1, 2, 7 & 12**. In each of these, "Lord" is Yahweh ([[H3068]]). [0] - Yahweh ([[H3068]]) occurs 16 times in 1 Samuel 16 - How did Samuel "hear" the Lord? - Are these examples of a Christophany? - Did the Holy Spirit speak to Samuel? - **Verses 13 & 14** specifically mention the "Spirit of the Lord". Is that different than "the Lord"? - Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David, then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David [13] - Unlike the previous examples I have studies, **verse 13** says about the Spirit, "from that day ([[H3117]]) forward ([[H4605]])" [13] - **Verse 18** says the Lord is with David [18] - The next verse says that the "Spirit of the Lord" departed from Saul [14] - **Verses 14, 15, 16 & 23** refer to "a spirit of distress from the Lord" tormenting Saul. **Verse 23** refers to the same "spirit" but calls it a "spirit from God". What is the difference between these and the good "Spirit of the Lord"? So Saul sent messengers to capture him, but the messengers would prophecy instead. Finally, Saul went and he too prophesied [11-24] - The Spirit of God came upon Saul's messengers and they began to prophesy [21] - The second and third set of messengers also prophesied, but the Bible doesn't mention the Spirit of God coming upon them. Perhaps it is assumed?? [21] - Finally, Saul went. - The Spirit of God came upon him [23] - Saul walked around prophesying until he came to Naioth in Ramah [23] - Then Saul stripped off his robes and prophesied before Samuel [24] - He collapsed and lay naked all day and night [24] - People said, "Is Saul among the prophets"? [11-12] - When Elijah stood by the mountain and the Lord passed by, it is similar to God showing His glory to Moses [11-13] - Elijah heard the still small voice (whisper). So it seems that God spoke to Elijah in an audible voice [12, 13] - 2016.03.18 - An angel / angel of the Lord came to Elijah and provided food and drink that was sufficient for a 40-day journey. [5, 7] - ’m pretty sure that angels and the HS are different. However, there has to be some sort of connection. [5, 7] - What is the connection between the HS and “the word of the Lord”? [9-10] - Assuming the Lord / God is triune, then somehow the HS is connected with this event. [9-10] - First, God told Elijah to go stand before Him on the mountain [11] - Next, the Lord passed by him [11] - Then, there were three events in which the Lord was not in (windstorm, earthquake & fire) [11-13] - Finally, He was in a still small voice. [12] - I never noticed before that Elijah had already been conversing with God prior to the whisper (see **1 Kings 19.9-11**) [11-13] - I’m not sure how to sort out all this. [23-24] - It would seem reasonable that if there was something idolatrous / offensive to God, it would hinder the Holy Spirit. I need to get conclusive Biblical proof of this concept. [23-24] --- ### Isaiah 11 #### 2023.03.23 {1-2} - As mentioned below, this chapter is about Jesus. Taken together with Isaiah 42, it would seem that God will put His Spirit on Jesus. What's confusing is the singular nature of the Spirit in chapter 42 and the plural (seven Spirits) mentioned in chapter 11 as well as Revelation 1. - For the longest time, I struggled with seeing more than six Spirits in this passage. However, after several convos with others, I think the "seventh" is actually the first mentioned, "The Spirit of the Lord." Previously, I "assumed" the 6 that followed were "characteristics" of the Spirit of the Lord. [2-11] - Lord [2-x2] = [[H3069]] - God [2, 6, 7, 8, 9] = [[H0410]] - Lord [3, 4, 6, 10] = [[H3068]] --- - [[Micah_03|Micah 3]] - Date - [8] --- ### Matthew 1 #### Context #### Spirit Summary - the Holy Spirit {18, 20} --- ### Matthew 2 #### Context #### Spirit Summary - No Spirit in this chapter --- ### Matthew 3 #### Context #### Spirit Summary - the Holy Spirit {11} - the Spirit of God {16} #### 2017.08.08 - John said Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire [11] - John further discusses the fire part by saying that the chaff will be burned with unquenchable fire. [12] - The “Spirit of God” descended like a dove and rested on Jesus and a voice from heaven spoke. All three of the trinity were present at the baptism. [16-17] - Based on the juxtaposition, it is reasonable to conclude that the “Holy Spirit” and the “Spirit of God” are the same. Also, the same Strong's Greek word [[G4151]] is used in both places. However, I need to keep researching that assumption. So He waited to give the Holy Spirit until [[Peter_(Bible_Character)|Peter]] showed up. - In some respects, the HS arrival in this story was a [[Rebuke|rebuke]] to the apostles that they didn’t go as [[Command|commanded]] and that they hadn’t properly trained the deacons. - If my theory is correct, then we can’t rub the lamp to get the genie out. God shows up when it is optimal for His plan. The story of [[Simon (Acts 8)|Simon’s]] desire for the Holy Spirit’s power would seem to confirm my observation [18-23)] - No major manifestation recorded by [[Luke_Author|Luke]]. However, **Acts 8.17** says they received the Holy Spirit. Again, there doesn't seem to be any contextual / amplifying info about being in the Spirit. Some questions: {10} - Is John referring to: - the "seven Spirits?" - Or a singular Spirit entity (the Holy Spirit)? - Or to a different spirit entity? - What did he mean / what does it look like to "be in the Spirit?" --- - 2022.12.03 - Tongue ([[G1100]]) occurs 8 times in the book of Revelation. It seems that in each case it is referring to the native language of its respective people group. If they get an impression that does bear fruit we want them to remember it. If they get an impression that does not bear fruit we want them to hold it suspect. - If someone says, "God told me (xyz)" we ask, "What are you going to do about that?" or "How is this going to change your life?" - I have some 3/3rds studies on this too - If you think it's the Holy Spirit, and if could see Jesus doing it, and at this point you don't know of a biblical reason not to do it, obey! - 2016.03.16 - [[Name_Key#^nk-11|M]] - Simple, prayer - 2016.03.16 - [[Name_Key#^nk-12|M]] - You can read the Bible and ask yourself, "What should I obey in this teaching?" - 2016.03.16 - [[Name_Key#^nk-13|M]] - Interesting question. Prayer, thoughtfully reading the Word, quiet time alone, waiting to hear from Holy Spirit, choosing to truly model Jesus' life in our own lives ... the Word mentions many ways. But I don't think there is a "tried and true" formula necessarily. Also writing down dreams if we hear Holy Spirit speaking to us as we sleep and dream. But I'm also convinced that it is rare for people to hear from the Lord, if they're convinced it cannot happen - through a lack of faith. Not impossible, but rare. In the book of Revelation, Jesus says, "Behold I stand at the door and knock, and if any man hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and sup with him, and he with me." Also, the prophet Joel said (and was quoted in the book of **Acts 2:17**), "‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams;'" These are prophecies, visions, and dreams, that we will receive and hear from Holy Spirit and, like Jesus, we shall only see and speak those things we hear from the Lord of Hosts. - 2016.03.16 - [[Name_Key#^nk-14|F]] - I agree with [[Name_Key#^nk-16|M]]...prayer, spending time in the Word, and just being open to hearing His voice. I know the Holy Spirit speaks to me in the smallest of things to the greatest. I'm familiar with His voice and completely trust Him.
