## Notes
### 2025.12.01 {7}
There is nothing in scripture to indicate A&E felt "shame" as I mentioned in [[#2011.01.30 {7}]]
### 2025.12.01 {21}
On 2018.08.30 I wrote about [[#2011.05.22 {21}]] saying I didn't agree with any of Boyd's thoughts. Although Boyd is one strange duck, today, I can't say I totally disagree with the referenced note
### 2018.08.30 {21}
I’m not sure I agree with any of Boyd’s thoughts discussed in [[#2011.05.22 {21}]]
### 2018.08.30 {21}
- Keeping in mind that Moses wrote this account of being kicked out of the garden while they were wandering in the desert for 40 years provides some insights that otherwise don’t seem obvious. For example, when God made garments of skin and clothed Adam and his wife, there is a strong parallel with the Israelites’ clothing not wearing out **Exodus 14.13**, **Deuteronomy 8.4**, 29.5, **Nehemiah 9.21**.
- I think this is about more than textile fabric or skins. God implied that the fig leaves were going to be inadequate in the harsh environment in which they were about to find themselves. So He graciously provided much superior clothing. He did the same thing for the Israelites as they wandered in the desert. But the bigger story is about God’s covering:
- Before the fall, A&E were “covered” by God even though their genitals were exposed
- Immediately after the fall, they said they were naked even though their genitals were now covered with fig leaves. This “nakedness” was the lack of spiritual relationship “covering” from God.
- As the Israelites wandered in the desert, they regularly pissed off God and He regularly threatened to withdraw from them. However, after much pleading from Moses, God stayed.
- I think the “clothing not wearing out” is a physical symbol of God’s “spiritual covering” while they wandered.
### 2018.08.25 {3}
We need to focus on the commands to be clothed in Godly characteristics rather than the man-made rules to be clothed in textile fabric. See [[NOTES/NOTES_(NO_PUB)/Man_Made_Rules|Man_Made_Rules]] for more details. See also [[Mispronouncing_Yahweh]] for similar thoughts about the name “Yahweh”.
### 2018.08.25 {6-7}
- It is interesting to note that after the woman ate the fruit, there wasn’t anything shocking that happened. However, after Adam ate also, then the eyes of both of them opened. I wonder, did Eve knowingly tempt Adam after her fall so she wouldn’t die alone? [6]
- Instead of confessing their sin, they attempted to cover it up with fig leaves. [7]
- See [J-101002](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OmxgzfAbqKaOjDA50fYy8Nk_pOF8QcIBvkYoYLIgafk/edit) [6-9] for more details.
### 2018.08.25 {7}
- Among the many lies Satan told Adam and Eve:
- Being naked is wrong and should be feared
- Lying about the definition of "naked"
- We should fear God as the creator

### 2016.01.09 {22}
- I think God is talking about our physical bodies in this verse.
### 2015.06.14 {15}
- The way NIV and some other translations interpret this verse is questionable.
- It is the serpent's offspring who will attack the woman’s heel and it is the woman’s offspring who will attack the serpent's head.
- The words for offspring are the same in both cases and the words for attack are the same in both cases.
- Although it seems cool to use this verse as a prophecy of Jesus’ victory over the serpent, it is questionable.
- Here are the NET notes:
- tn Heb “you will attack him [on] the heel.” The verb (translated “attack”) is repeated here, a fact that is obscured by some translations (e.g., NIV “crush…strike”). The singular pronoun agrees grammatically with the collective singular noun “offspring.” For other examples of singular verb and pronominal forms being used with the collective singular “offspring,” see Gen 16:10; 22:17; 24:60. The word “heel” is an adverbial accusative, locating the blow. A bite on the heel from a poisonous serpent is potentially fatal.
- sn The etiological nature of v. 15 is apparent, though its relevance for modern western man is perhaps lost because we rarely come face to face with poisonous snakes. Ancient Israelites, who often encountered snakes in their daily activities (see, for example, Eccl 10:8; Amos 5:19), would find the statement quite meaningful as an explanation for the hostility between snakes and humans. (In the broader ancient Near Eastern context, compare the Mesopotamian serpent omens. See H. W. F. Saggs, The Greatness That Was Babylon, 309.) This ongoing struggle, when interpreted in light of v. 15, is a tangible reminder of the conflict introduced into the world by the first humans’ rebellion against God. Many Christian theologians (going back to Irenaeus) understand v. 15 as the so-called protevangelium, supposedly prophesying Christ’s victory over Satan (see W. Witfall, “Genesis 3:15 – a Protevangelium?”CBQ 36 [1974]: 361-65; and R. A. Martin, “The Earliest Messianic Interpretation of Genesis 3:15,” JBL 84 [1965]: 425-27). In this allegorical approach, the woman’s offspring is initially Cain, then the whole human race, and ultimately Jesus Christ, the offspring (Heb “seed”) of the woman (see Gal 4:4). The offspring of the serpent includes the evil powers and demons of the spirit world, as well as those humans who are in the kingdom of darkness (see John 8:44). According to this view, the passage gives the first hint of the gospel. Satan delivers a crippling blow to the Seed of the woman (Jesus), who in turn delivers a fatal blow to the Serpent (first defeating him through the death and resurrection [1 Cor 15:55-57] and then destroying him in the judgment [Rev 12:7-9; 20:7-10]). However, the grammatical structure of Gen 3:15b does not suggest this view. The repetition of the verb “attack,” as well as the word order, suggests mutual hostility is being depicted, not the defeat of the serpent. If the serpent’s defeat were being portrayed, it is odd that the alleged description of his death comes first in the sentence. If he has already been crushed by the woman’s “Seed,” how can he bruise his heel? To sustain the allegorical view, v. 15b must be translated in one of the following ways: “he will crush your head, even though you attack his heel” (in which case the second clause is concessive) or “he will crush your head as you attack his heel” (the clauses, both of which place the subject before the verb, may indicate synchronic action).
### 2015.06.13 {10}
This morning, I was pondering how Adam and Eve felt after they ate the forbidden fruit. This verse says they told God they were afraid. I was trying to image that scene. The picture that came my mind was when I have messed up in the past and had to face the authority figure. One feeling, my bowels usually felt like everything was going to run out. Another, my nuts tried to crawl up into my body as far as possible.
It says in **Genesis 3.7** that they sewed fig leaves together to make aprons / loincloths. I wonder if their bodies were reacting like mine does in those type of situations. If so, that could explain why they attempted to cover their genital / anal sections.
### 2015.05.17 {21}
From Boyd Allen on Google+ - Discussion question:
- Is there a difference between being clothed with "garments of skin" and "garments made from animal skin"? Since the original translation and subsequent translations never reveals the source of the skin, or what those garments looked like, the only conclusions we can have is that it either implied clothing made from animal skins or literally "clothing OF skin", or our skin we have today. IF our skin is the very clothing God made, then why are we seeing that as naked now when it is the very clothing God gave Adam and Eve?
### 2012.12.28 {1}
NET Study Note on "shrewd"
- There is a wordplay in Hebrew between the words “naked” (עֲרוּמִּים, ’arummim) in Genesis 2.25 and “shrewd” (עָרוּם, ’arum) in Genesis 3.1. The point seems to be that the integrity of the man and the woman is the focus of the serpent’s craftiness. At the beginning they are naked and he is shrewd; afterward, they will be covered and he will be cursed.
### 2012.10.28 {17-19}
See my note on [[Isaiah_55_Notes#2012.10.28 {10}|Isaiah 55:10]].
### 2012.06.27 {16}
In the curses pronounced by God, He said in reference to the relationship between man and woman:
- he will dominate you (NET)
- he will rule over you (NIV, NASB, NLT)
- he shall rule over you (ESV, NKJV, NRSV)
- he'll lord it over you (MSG)
- he will be your master (BBE)
- he shall rule over thee (KJV)
A couple thoughts.
- Some critics of nudism claim that we want to return to Eden. Certainly there is a desire to do so, but that doesn't seem possible until Jesus comes back. Nowhere in the judgment oracles of God, does He condemn nakedness or command clothes. However, he does curse the relationship between man and woman. Later in the NT, God through Paul holds out the ideal that we should all strive to meet. What is interesting, I bet almost all women and most Christian men would agree that the NT version of male-female relationship is the one we should pursue. However, (although there is nothing negative discussed in the Bible about nudity) many of those same people would probably condemn nudity by saying we are trying to return to Eden. Obviously, there is something wrong with this logic and I bet it is sourced from Satan.
- The NET note on this passage ties it back to Christ loving His bride the church.
- sn: This passage is a judgment oracle. It announces that conflict between man and woman will become the norm in human society. It does not depict the NT ideal, where the husband sacrificially loves his wife, as Christ loved the church, and where the wife recognizes the husband’s loving leadership in the family and voluntarily submits to it. Sin produces a conflict or power struggle between the man and the woman, but in Christ man and woman call a truce and live harmoniously (Ephesians 5:18-32).
### 2012.05.31 {2}
The conversation Eve had with the serpent (Satan) in **Genesis 3.2-5** is what got her into trouble. At first, I was going to write that she shouldn't have had the conversation at all. However, if that were true, then we wouldn't be free to talk with anyone but God.
I think a better view is that we shouldn't have any conversations that don't include God in the discussion. I don't mean talking "about" God, but actually include Him in the discussion. Now that we have the Holy Spirit with us, we always have God with us. However, we rarely include the HS in our conversations
Although I have read about this in notes, I really didn't get it until this morning.
### 2012.05.15 {6}
I have been pondering why none of us regularly check with God before acting on our desires. It started with Eve and continues to today. We think God is holding out on us and we can get the good stuff if we grab it while He isn't looking (as if).
777 - Lord, please forgive me and the rest of us. Help me and others stay connected to you. Help me check with you before acting on my desires.
### 2012.05.15 {14}
- In verses **Genesis 3:.1** and **Genesis 3.13**, God queried Adan & Eve respectively about their activity. However, after Eve accused the serpent of deceiving her, God did not question the serpent. He immediately started in with the judgment oracles.
### 2011.11.14 {14}
See my note on [[Genesis_03_Notes#2011.08.04 {17-19}|Genesis 3.17-19]] about eating.
### 2011.10.10 {17-19}
I have been listening to the OT in the car. Over and over, the kings would get into trouble because of their wives.
This pattern started in the orchard.
Clearly, Eve was the "best" wife possible. She was made directly by God and was Adam's wife before the fall. Yet, she fell victim to Satan's temptations. Then, Adam followed her without any thought for God.
The lesson I see here, it is not the woman's fault (although she did sin) that Adam and most men sin. It is our fault. We need to be strong leaders and stand fast for God against Satan and his attacks. I should have held off getting married until I was strong enough to be the man I needed to be for my wife. When I say, "strong", I don't mean in my own strength (because that will never be enough), but in my dependence on God.
I don't know Evan well enough to know if he is ready for marriage. I also don't know James well enough. Clearly Ryan is not ready since he is still not a Christian. I also don't think Brent is mature enough either.
### 2011.08.26 {22}
Where in the Bible does it say that our spirits live forever? This verse implies they don't.
777 - Lord, please teach me and show me Your great and unsearchable things.
### 2011.08.11 {21}
The Strong's word for clothe is, [[H3847]], labash. It can mean physical clothing such as skins and it is also used to discuss characteristics such as "clothed with integrity" [Psalm 132.9] and "adorn yourself, with majesty and excellency, and clothe yourself with glory and honor." [Job 40.10] There are 112 occurrences of this word in the OT. After further analysis, it seems that there are more occurrences meaning textile type clothing than characteristics. I looked at 64 of the 112 and 45 of the 64 dealt with some sort of textile type clothing. These included turbans and armor. At this point, I don't think I can make any type of conclusion about the "labash-H3847" provided by God for Adam and Eve.
[[777]] - Lord, please show me the purpose of the skins you gave to Adam and Eve.
### 2011.08.06 {12}
Adam blamed God for his sin. He told God that it was God who gave him the woman that gave him the fruit to eat.
We are still doing the same thing today when we claim that looking on a woman's naked body will cause me to sin. The book, "Every Man's Battle" even codifies this sin. It suggests we should "bounce our eyes" to avoid looking at a woman's "clothed" body. I have not read the book. I can only imagine what it would say about looking at a woman's naked body, the image of God.
Every time we act like it is the woman's body that causes lust in a man, we are saying that God created her too beautiful. It is God's fault that she is so beautiful. I can't control my lust, so I will blame God for my sin. Jesus made it clear that it is the evil in our hearts that causes us to sin, not what comes into the body.
How can the church endorse such a concept. It is the same thing that started in the orchard. We still haven't repented (turned away) from Adam's sin.
777 - Lord, please forgive us. Please enable us to see past Satan's deception and to embrace your truth. Please give us the strength to stand up against the lies of Satan.
### 2011.08.04 {17-19}
Woven into the curse on Adam is a hint of hope. Although it will be difficult, God says there will be food for them to eat.
- V17 - you will eat
- V18 - you will eat the grain of the field
- V19 - you will eat food
On a different note, the NETBible notes say that there is a theme around the word "eat".
- They were commanded not to eat from the forbidden tree
- They did eat
- God interrogated them about eating
- The serpent was cursed to eat the dust
- V17 - eating will come after painful toil
- V18 - eating will come after dealing with thorns and thistles
- V19 - eating will come after sweating
Still another way to look at all this; Moses was writing this after they missed the chance to go into the promised land and now they are wandering in the desert. Even though the curse wasn't fully removed, the land flowing with milk and honey sure sounded closer to Eden than the desert they were stuck in for the next 40 years. It was as if they had to relive the testing and cursing and driving out all over again. This time, they were given the opportunity to eat from the tree of life so to speak (the promised land), but rejected it in favor of Egypt. Consequently, God cursed them and made them wander in the desert. I don't know about the thorns and thistles, but I am sure there was lots of dust, painful toil and sweating going on. I can picture Moses writing this story about creation and explaining it to the people and then connecting the dots with their current situation.
[[777]] - Thank you Lord! What an incredible insight. I give you all the credit and glory for showing me this.
### 2011.07.30 {10}
In conversations with David Martin, he said he was unwilling to commit to the same conclusion I did in the second paragraph of [[#2011.05.28 {10}]]. He felt that Adam and Eve were very confused because they just entered the fallen world. However, this was not written by Adam as a real-time journal. It was written by Moses many-many hundreds of years later based on inspiration from the Holy Spirit. Although I am sure they were confused by a lot of things, but the only affect mentioned was fear. The fear is confirmed by the story that they hid from God and that they attempted to hide their "nakedness". In our culture today, a typical response to fear is hiding.
In a previous writing in my journal, I observed that there is some sort of connection between fear and shame. I still don't understand how they are related, but I feel confident there is a connection.
[[777]] - Lord, please reveal this to me. Thanks.
### 2011.07.27 {20-21}
God had just cursed the serpent, the woman, the man and the ground. In a couple of more verses, God kicks them out of the orchard in Eden. This is not a good story.
The story was written by Moses to the Israelites. I am guessing that he included this account to help them understand their origins; not only physically, but their relationship with God. There are two verses that show the provision of God inserted between the cursing and the kicking-out. The first one reminds the Israelites that despite all the cursing, Eve became the mother of everyone. God has a plan bigger than the orchard. The second provisional verse is where God clothes them. God had just talked about the thorns, thistles, sweat and painful toil. Then in a couple more verses, he says that God "drove" them out of the orchard and told Adam to cultivate the ground.
I think these verses were inserted here to remind the Israelites that despite their sin, God provides for them. This was written after they came out of Egypt and while they were wandering in the desert after sinning repeatedly. These two verses are the kick-off of the romance between God and us. Where He pursues us and provides for us despite our constant turning away from Him.
[[777]] - Thank you Lord for this insight. Please show me more.
### 2011.07.23 {20}
In the middle of the judgement oracles of God, there are a couple of sentences that seem out of place. The first one is most strange.
[[777]] - Lord, why did Moses say this about Eve at this point in the story?
### 2011.06.16 {2}
In **Genesis 2.16**, the Lord God said that Adam (and presumably Eve) could, "freely eat fruit from every tree of the orchard". (See also my note [[Genesis_02_Notes#2011.03.01 {16-17}|Genesis 2.16]])
However, after the serpent had questioned God's goodness in **Genesis 3.1** Eve failed to reply with an abundance mentality and limited God's goodness. She said, "we may eat of the fruit from the trees of the orchard". What may seem like a subtle difference, is quite significant because we do it all the time. We question God's goodness and assume He is selfish and is keeping us from enjoying all the "good" stuff there is available to us.
### 2011.06.16 {14}
I don't understand the significance, but I noted an observation: we are made from dust and in God's judgement of the serpent, He said the serpent would eat dust all the days of his life.
### 2011.06.04 {6}
Prior to technically sinning, (they hadn't eaten the forbidden fruit yet), Eve was guilty of sins Jesus later talked about. It says that she saw that it was good for food (lust of the flesh), attractive to the eye, (lust of the eye) and desirable for making one wise (pride of life). See [1 John 2:16](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CGr36y4FxM2dN1C4ByEvjtutqmylXRVb9VlzvW6JMOU/edit#bookmark=id.6g0a9w9yja84).
At this point in the story, they were still "naked and unashamed". The lust she was guilty of had nothing to do with being naked. It had everything to do with desiring something that God said she could not have. Elicit sex is another such thing God said we could not have, but we often lust after. Again, it has nothing to do with nakedness and everything to do with disobeyed God.
### 2011.06.02 {21}
Another theory about why God provided the clothing but did not provide any guidance in the Genesis account comes from Matthew Neal. God did not want us to idolize clothing or nudity (as we have with clothing). If he had said that we must be nude, then we would have suffered with inclement weather and would have struggled with thorns even more than we do. On the other hand, if He had said that we must be clothed, then we would have idolized clothing. Sound familiar?
### 2011.05.28 {10}
When Adam encountered God after sinning, it says he was afraid and naked. There are two very interesting observations:
Nowhere does it say that he was ashamed. It says that they were afraid. Many people want to assume they were ashamed because a few verses earlier, it says they were naked and unashamed. They assume that since they knew they were naked, they were now ashamed. However, the only affect discussed in the text is fear. Clearly, fear is called for in the situation. God said they would die if they ate from the forbidden tree. I doubt they understood the concept of death, but they had to assume it was a bad thing since it was the consequence of disobedience. Again, fear is an appropriate affect. On the other hand, I have trouble understanding how they would be feeling fear (???).
After sinning and shortly before the encounter with God, Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves together to make coverings for themselves. Several translations say the coverings were loin coverings or loin clothes or aprons. If these translations are correct, Adam and Eve had their genitals covered when they told God they were naked. Apparently, they felt naked despite having their genitals covered. I wonder why they felt naked despite having their genitals covered? I suspect, the nakedness has nothing to do with their genitals, but more to do with their relationships with God, with each other and with the world they were commanded to exercise dominion over.
### 2011.05.22 {21}
Some thoughts about the garments God made from Boyd Allen: ([http://bacn.bravehost.com/naturism_gospel.html](http://bacn.bravehost.com/naturism_gospel.html))
Nevertheless, something did die! An animal was put to death. Why? Could it have been a sheep or a favorite pet of Adam or Eve? Did God want Adam and Eve to understand what death was? When God made that coat of skin for them, did he just pop it out of thin air? Or did God take Adam and Eve aside and took one of their favorite animals, slaughtered it right in front of them, then made the coats for them to wear? Can you imagine being forced to wear the skin of your favorite pet after someone had slaughtered it because of some terrible deed you have done and as a constant reminder of your sins?
And to make it worse, their Godly skin, created in the image and likeness of God, is now hidden away and replaced by the skin of that dead animal! They were, in a sense, reduced in status to a dead animal, no longer a living, dynamic, human being in a wonderful relationship with God. In God’s sight, we became no better off than a dead animal! The skin of death clung to their bodies for the rest of their lives and to all humanity since then.... until....Jesus Christ.
### 2011.03.24 {7}
The "aprons" that Adam and Eve made from fig leaves is the Strong's word, 02290. It is used a total of 7 times in Genesis and generally means a belt. The belt is often used as a piece of armor to hold a knife or sword. Another interesting observation, out of 10 different translations, 4 refer to the coverings as loin cloths or aprons. The remaining 6 just say coverings.
This reminded me of [Ephesians 6:14](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1boA2AZN16DJZQWfRP-RtV6Q3qZtBju2IJvNCY-YTU5g/edit#bookmark=id.90hif45qdyrb) where Paul is exhorting the church to put on the full armor of God. The first item of armor is the belt of truth around the waist. I think it is interesting that the reaction to the initial sin was to cover the waist with fig leaves and then millenniums later, Paul is saying to cover the waist with truth. There has to be a really important clue here.
Another interesting observation. Most people say that A&E were attempting to cover their shame with the fig leaves. However there is no mention of shame in the verse except in the New Living Translation. On the other hand, based on the context, they felt fear and were trying to figure out a way to hide from God.
### 2011.03.20 {7}
Adam's rejection of his own nudity signaled a rejection of God authority in his life. (Who Hates Nudity… God or Satan?) by Matthew Neal in "The Biblical Naturist".

This is an observation from Denise. The purpose of the fig leaf covering was camouflage.
Nowhere does it say that they were embarrassed or ashamed. However, in **Genesis 3.10** Adam says that they hid because they were afraid.
The act of attempted camouflage and the attempt to hide due to fear are consistent.

Prior to sinning, Adam and Eve only knew Good. After they sinned, they knew both good and "evil'.
The statement from the serpent (Satan) had some truth. The fact is that prior to eating the forbidden fruit, they did not know evil and afterward, they did. So, when the serpent said they would know good AND evil, he was correct.
One of the things that the serpent glossed over was the fact that Adam and Eve were already "like" divine beings. **Genesis 1.26** says that we were made "after our likeness". Eve also failed to acknowledge that fact when she made a feeble attempt to stand up against Satan.
Is it any wonder that the church is so anemic today. We fail to acknowledge that we are made in God's image and likeness. Had Eve rebuked the serpent's misdirection, and stood on the foundation of her image and likeness to God, then things may have turned out differently.
Regardless how things may have been different in the Garden, it is clear from other passages that denying who we are in Christ has negative consequences.

There are numerous half-truths in the woman's statement concerning the Lord's command. Among them: There were two trees in the middle of the orchard. In her reply to the serpent, she implied there was only one, the prohibited one. She failed to acknowledge the tree of life.
This attitude is still prevalent in our society today and even in many churches. We focus on the negative, the rules and ignore the source of life and freedom.
One could argue that the first sin was Eve's failure to acknowledge the source of life as central in her life.
To whom or what are you devoted? It appears Eve was "devoted" to avoiding the fruit. She even added an extra rule to avoid the fruit. Since she was so devoted to avoiding the forbidden fruit, she missed the mark (sin) of being devoted to the tree of life (Jesus).
### 2011.03.02 {11}
Before they sinned, Adam did not realize he was created and walked with God, the creator, with no protection. There was nothing hindering a completely open and honest relationship with God and with Eve.
After they sinned, their eyes were opened to the fact of their relational nakedness.

A thought on why Adam and Eve attempted to cover their shame and we still do so today.
We have sinned against God. we messed up the opportunity to be in paradise with God forever and we now have evil thoughts and an evil and rebellious heart. We don't want other people to see what is in our hearts. So we hide.
It is possible that Satan told them some sort of lie about sex, and that is why they put on "aprons". Since one of the first commands God gave them was to procreate, it seems likely that Satan planted a lie that has grown unto death.
