This is especially true since scripture says, "looked upon ALL that He had made {BSB}." - On the other hand, there is no doubt we were INCLUDED in God's assessment. I believe it IS sinful and heretical to be ashamed of the body God created and in the naked form in which it was created. - Furthermore, even more than in 2011, I think the fact that God has yet to resend His initial assessment is very important to the story line! ### 2025.12.04 {9-13} - I don't agree with my note [[#2012.11.19 {9-13}]] about this being a [[prophesy]] of [[Jesus]]' [[baptism]]. Although the verbal picture is cool, I think it is a stretch to call it a prophesy. Maybe it could be an analogy ... at best. ### 2015.06.15 {28} - This verse is arguably the first [[Great_Commission]]. We were commanded to: - be fruitful - multiply - fill the earth - govern it - reign over the fish, birds & animals - Here is a clear command to multiply. Admittedly it has to do with procreation. - See [[Matthew_28_Notes#2015.06.15 {18-20}|Matthew 28.18-20]] for thoughts on the "last" Great Commission. ### 2015.10.11 {6-8} - Perhaps [[God]] didn't want us to [[worship]] the [[sun]] and [[moon]] so He didn't pronounce them [[good]]. ### 2014.03.04 {26-27} - For more on my view of the "[[Image_of_God]]": - [[Image_of_God_Study]] - [[OT_Image_of_God]] - [[Comments_on_Image_Study]] ### 2012.11.19 {9-13} - Denise read somewhere that this passage is a [[prophecy]] of [[Jesus]] and of [[baptism]]. - The land rising out of the sea looks like Jesus rising from the [[Die|dead]] and also like someone rising out of the water after baptism. - The second half of the passage discusses [[fruit]] from the [[land]] after it rises from the [[sea]]. Again, this is analogous to the fruit Jesus / we bear after rising from the dead / baptism. ### 2012.08.16 {28} - I got to thinking about God's [[command]] to subdue ([[H3533]]) the earth. According to Dictionary.com it has seven meanings: - to conquer and bring into subjection: Rome subdued Gaul. - to overpower by superior force; overcome. - to bring under mental or emotional control, as by persuasion or intimidation; render submissive. - to repress (feelings, impulses, etc.). - to bring (land) under cultivation: to subdue the wilderness. - to reduce the intensity, force, or vividness of (sound,light, color, etc.); tone down; soften. - to allay (inflammation, infection, etc.). - The one that seems to fit the context the best is to bring the land under cultivation. - The NetBible notes say: Elsewhere the Hebrew verb translated “subdue” means “to enslave” (2 Chr 28:10; Neh 5:5; Jer 34:11, 16), “to conquer,” (Num 32:22, 29; Josh 18:1; 2 Sam 8:11; 1 Chr 22:18; Zech 9:13; and probably Mic 7:19), and “to assault sexually” (Esth 7:8). None of these nuances adequately meets the demands of this context, for humankind is not viewed as having an adversarial relationship with the world. The general meaning of the verb appears to be “to bring under one’s control for one’s advantage.” In **Genesis 1.28** one might paraphrase it as follows: “harness its potential and use its resources for your benefit.” In an ancient Israelite context this would suggest cultivating its fields, mining its mineral riches, using its trees for construction, and domesticating its animals. - I like the paraphrase, "harness its potential and use its resources for your benefit.” - [[777]] - Lord, how do we do this in a way that [[Honor|honors]] and [[Glorify|glorifies]] you as [[creator]]? - It seems the simple answer to the question above, is simply to "honor and glorify [[God]]" in all we do. Too often, we as Christians go about our lives making decisions about relationships and the creation without asking God what He wants. For the non-Christians, they actively pretend God doesn't exist and didn't create the earth. They contrive all sorts of scientific models to explain things to try to prove that God does not exist. ### 2012.12.18 {6-8} - A couple of interesting observations for day 2 of [[creation]]: - This is the only day God made no comments such as, "God saw that it was [[good]]" - It would appear that less [[work]] was done on this day compared to others, especially [[day]] 6. - Depending upon how the days of the [[week]] are numbered and what [[day]] you consider the first day of the week, day 2 could be a [[Monday]].  It would appear that God had a tough Monday. - [[777]] - Lord, I don't want to make light of your creation or your [[Creator|creativeness]].  I don't understand how the observations above fit into  everything else.  Please [[teach]] me. ### 2012.06.26 {29} - After [[Command|commanding]] man to [[Multiplication|multiply]] and fill, subdue and [[rule]] over the [[earth]] in **Genesis 1.28**, He then gave man every seed bearing plant on the entire earth as [[food]]. - Before today, I hadn't noticed that all the plants on the entire earth were given to man, not just those in the [[garden]]. - [[777]] - Lord, please show me the significance of this. ### 2012.04.20 {3} - I read somewhere that during the six days of creation, God "made" ( [[H6213]]) everything except light. In the case of light, He spoke "amar" ([[H0559]]) and it came into being. - I did a search for ( [[H6213]]) "asah" and discovered the statement above is correct. - [[777]] - Lord, what is the significance of this? ### 2011.08.06 {26-27} - We are "divine" beings because we are made in the image and likeness of God. See also **Genesis 5.1**. - We are made in the [[image]] and [[likeness]] of [[God]]. We image His [[glory]]. (We must be careful to not get that backwards and think that God images our glory. But this if off the point.) Our [[naked]] [[glory]] reminds [[Satan]] of God's glory. In addition to convincing us to hide God's image under textile [[Clothing_Textile_People|clothing]], Satan also convinces us to be ashamed of our naked glory and consequently God's glory. ### 2011.08.06 {28} - We are the only creators that have the ability and command to produce "divine" beings. See **Genesis 1.27**, **Genesis 4.1** and **Genesis 5.1**. - We were created in the [[image]] and [[likeness]] of [[God]]. Our [[naked]] [[Body|bodies]] image God's [[glory]]. [[Satan]] convinced our parents and us to cover our our glorious bodies so he wouldn't have to be reminded of God's glory every time he sees one of us. - Satan also convinced us to be [[shame|ashamed]] of our naked glory. Jesus said in **Mark 8.38** and **Luke 9.26**, that if we are ashamed of Him, he will be ashamed of us when He comes in His glory. This may be a stretch, and I will have to develop this further in the future, but I can see the connection between the shame we feel about our bodies and being ashamed of Jesus. - [[777]] - Lord, [[forgive]] me and all of [[mankind]] for being ashamed of the bodies that You created and said were very good. ### 2011.06.11 {28} This is arguably the "first" [[Great_Commission]]. Compare with **Matthew 28.18-20.** ### 2011.05.26 {31} This is the first declaration from God about [[mankind]]. Nowhere in the bible does God rescind this initial statement. Surely, the fact that it is His first statement about us is very important! ### 2011.05.25 {28} This is a foundational passage. It is the very first command issued to mankind. I don't fully grasp all the implications, but I am convinced that this is a key to understanding much of the rest of the Bible and how we are to relate to God. ### 2011.05.24 {26-27, 31} Nowhere in the Bible does God [[command]] us (as a general population) to wear clothes or to go [[naked]].  On the other hand, it is clear from scripture that God made us in His image.  It is also clear in **Genesis 1:31**, that He thought His handiwork was "very good".  How can it be "right" to think and act otherwise?  Although there is no [[sin]] in wearing clothing, I believe it is sin to be ashamed of God's image. ### 2011.05.22 {26-27} This is a foundational passage. If we build our relationship with God and others on a skewed view of our image, then our building, the church will be leaning and may fall.  **Genesis 1-3** provides the foundational basis for the rest of the Bible.  (See also **Genesis 2.25**.) ### 2011.03.20 {26-27} We are created in the [[image]] and [[likeness]] of [[God]]. The bible does not name any other [[creature]] on [[earth]] or in [[heaven]] that was created in God's image. [[Satan]] is very jealous of God and wants to destroy everything that is good from God.  Since he can't completely destroy us, he will do anything he can to tarnished God's crowning creation, us.  It is reasonable to presume that the answer to the rhetorical question God asked Adam, "who told you that you are naked" is the [[serpent]] (Satan). Every time Satan sees our [[naked]] [[glory]], he is reminded of God since we are made in his image.  Therefore he told a lie to Adam after they sinned that they were naked and needed to cover up. ### 2011.03.01 {28} God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply! According to the NET notes, the verb “bless” here means “to endow with the capacity to reproduce and be fruitful. We had a discussion about this at lunch on Sunday. Denise pointed out that we often think about a blessing as something like money or stuff. However, at least in Genesis, the "blessing" refers to [[multiplication]]. For example, God showed me how much He blessed me and CrossBridge when we were in India. He worked through us to bring 1000's into the [[kingdom]]. For me, that brought incredible [[joy]]. It was a true blessing. ### 2010.07.25 {0} Started memorizing **Genesis 1** ## Other Notes - [NAU](https://docs.google.com/document/d/11VRbC_ibUmsut6pL9BYosWwgQUvkGwuMkEcpr3AZ31M/edit) - [Image of God](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_MgOQUxv2mzPzWgVcJd_IAtwN-jpmpKzbfwon0zYWuo/edit)** - [Psalms 139.13](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eTqTQRXBqu0ps-KIEfcksOJcKCgDTUgYdYzcbS_s4y8/edit#bookmark=id.83k602tcw8ky) [26-27] - [Colossians 1.15](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qdhKm2JofvYg9FDDJdUkpvQ4Ks7gIx9nzn9gR4tq-zo/edit#bookmark=id.cox3gvoz5662) [26-27] - [J-160119 - Choice](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1izV_G4Smfi8W9dNwu-B6jWDP2ewhsjndmj-Bn_nKoww/edit) [29] - [J-150808](https://docs.google.com/document/d/17y5PPBMhhjxS63TvVjHyBrxp9hqdqZCmwakpsAy1KtQ/edit#bookmark=id.myg6iehkh49n) [26-27] - [J-150518](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sB0wwWf2GwnPdNUuYE5gs58JMaCmhCuZe8Md_6b6Ku0/edit) [3-5] - [J-130704 - Time Travel and the Image of God](https://docs.google.com/document/d/10fXyLE7z7XmmRv-97I8asdniMVqdnkOHtMbNGIuEckA/edit) [26-27] - [J-110808 - Notes for Discussion with Church Leadership](https://docs.google.com/document/d/19ljxIMp-bRvB_DQcAWV_Rc70zZiR2MptCV-gfmFR0Pw/edit) [26-28, 31] - [J-100917](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QwjWVxmtIOSluZoDOaT9XjwvwG8vgRoGQnA6C_HKCs4/edit) [16] - [J-100916](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pw7t1rLT2w1pZdGYBL1m0qkvEvUwkCfCp2nf3VGZgbY/edit) [26-27] - [J-100605 - Be Fruitful and Multiply](https://docs.google.com/document/d/11ByI2SjFECR_clpNmi0mpN0esDWGD5WYKhZaQxjd4EQ/edit) [22, 28] - [J-090304](https://docs.google.com/document/d/111lOHs93x6iDpLQFLOGCiubLRvfPXDdgCtOB1T0JFww/edit) [26] - [[Thoughts_on_The_Image_of_God_in_the_Book_of_Genesis_a_Study_of_Terminology__James_Barr]] {26-27}
