# Freedom vs. Man-Made-Rules Study
## TL;DR
- Short list of NT Freedom verses:
- John 8.31-32
- So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
- 1 Corinthians 10.29b
- For why should my freedom be determined by someone else’s conscience?
- 2 Corinthians 3.17
- Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
- Galatians 5.1
- It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.
- Galatians 5.13
- For you, brothers, were called to freedom; but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, serve one another in love.
- Colossians 2.20-23
- If you have died with Christ to the spiritual forces of the world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its regulations: “Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!”? These will all perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such restrictions indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-prescribed worship, their false humility, and their harsh treatment of the body; but they are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
- James 1.25
- But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so—not being a forgetful hearer, but an effective doer—he will be blessed in what he does.
- James 2.12
- Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the Law that gives freedom.
- 1 Peter 2.16
- Live in freedom, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.
- Other Significant Observations
- Jesus set us free from:
- Paying the temple tax (Matthew 17.26)
- Law (Romans 7.6)
- Law of sin and death (Romans 8.2)
- Jesus set us free to?
- Serve in the new way of the Spirit (Romans 7.6)
- What does the Bible say about the commands of men?
- They have no value against the indulgence of the flesh (Colossians 2.20-23)
- The attack against our freedom in Jesus will come from within:
- See 2 Timothy 4.3-4 in particular
- Paul directed Titus to rebuke those who teach the commands of men instead of the truth. (1 Timothy 1.3-4 & Titus 1.13-14)
- Whoever doesn’t honor what Jesus did on the cross to pay for our freedom, doesn’t honor the Father. {John 5.22-23}

- Jesus tied “continuing / hold to / abide ([[G3306]]) in His word” with being His disciples. From that, we will know the truth ([[G0225]]) and the truth ([[G0225]]) would set them free. This is the same “abide” that occurs 11-times in **John 15** {31}
- What is interesting the the Jews total lack of awareness. They forgot about being slaves in Egypt and were currently “slaves” to Rome. {33}
