Additionally, there have been two other studies merged into this one. The history is detailed below. I used a current date instead of one in the past because there were so many that applied. - Original Fear study started - 2019.07.03 - What does the Bible say about fear? - What are the divine tensions? - I saw a post on Instagram that quoted Donald Miller - "Fear tricks us into living a boring life" What if any is the Biblical basis for that statement? - What is fear and how does it affect our lives, our relationship with God and with others? - How is fear related with courage? Compare with [[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_NOTES/2018/2018.05.10.1754_Strong_and_Courageous_Bible_Study|Strong and Courageous Bible Study]] - Look at - to cause to tremble, tremble ([[H6206]]) - To be distressed ([[G0085]]) - Cowardly ([[G1169]]) - to put to flight, to terrify, frighten ([[G5399]]) - panic flight, fear, the causing of fear, terror ([[G5401]]) - How does fear affect our decisions? - 2019.12.28 - Decided to merge “[[Awe]] / [[Fear]] of the [[Lord]] Bible Study” into this study - Started 2015.07.11 - What does the Bible say about being in “awe of God”? - How should this change the way I see, understand and worship God? - Who or what is the object of the fear / awe discussed in the verses? - What needs to change in me so I do everything in awe/fear of God? - How is “Awe / Fear of the Lord” different from fear of other things? - 2020.03.14 - After doing more study on Worry, Anxiety & Fretting, I think I should combine that study into this one - Started—2019.12.29 - What does the Bible say about: - Worry ([[G3309]]) - Anxiety / Anxiousness ([[G3309]]) - Fretting ([[H2734]]) - 2022.10.29 - Based on my Journal note dated 2011.06.24, I speculated there is some sort of connection between [[Fear]] and [[Shame]]. --- ## ToDo - Copy / merge info from: - [[Fear Bible Study.ods]] - Compare with these studies - [Fear of Envy Bible Study](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mcuTE5iNXWbmolJZJUnLejnFkPNt3YeSW5ghDllN7b8/edit "https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mcuTE5iNXWbmolJZJUnLejnFkPNt3YeSW5ghDllN7b8/edit") - [Strong and Courageous Bible Study](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GHKxIyngt-XLWFhfeZlBkaARnG8chWB31m-hS42uW-8/edit#heading=h.8n3rcmctafh3 "https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GHKxIyngt-XLWFhfeZlBkaARnG8chWB31m-hS42uW-8/edit#heading=h.8n3rcmctafh3") - Compare with the lyrics in these songs - [Whom Shall I fear (The God of Angel Armies) - Song by David Wesley](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=belPmfNDuko "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=belPmfNDuko") - [Zach Williams - No Longer Slaves (Live from Harding Prison)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDnA_coA168 "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDnA_coA168") - DONE - Copy / merge into this study - [[Fear Bible Study.odt]] - Awe / Fear of the Lord Bible Study --- ## Methodology - In each of the passages, look at: - Who - Who is demonstrating fear? - Object - The object of the fear? - Actions - What did the fear-er do? - Result / Consequence - What were the results / consequences to the fear-er? - Command - What if any command was given - Fear Word - Notes / Context --- ## tl;dr - Jesus commanded the disciples: - Don't be afraid of those who will persecute them [Matthew 10.26] - Don't be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul [Matthew 10.28, Luke 12.4] - However, they should fear the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell [Matthew 10.28, Luke 12.5] - When the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water, He told them to take courage and don't be afraid. [Matthew 14.27] - Don't be afraid because they (we) are worth more than sparrows [Luke 12.6-7] - Don't worry about stuff, but seek first the kingdom [Luke 12.22-31] - Don't be afraid, because their Father is pleased to give them the kingdom [Luke 12.32] - Other "commands" to not fear - The angel Gabriel told Zechariah not to fear {Luke 1.13} - Fear of God - In Mary's song, she wrote, "His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation." {Luke 1.50} - Fear of man - Initially, Herod was afraid of the people which kept John the Baptist alive, then later, he was afraid of his guests so he had him killed {Matthew 14.5, 9-10} - Other fears - Jesus' disciples were afraid when they saw Him walking on the water {Matthew 14.26} - When Peter was walking on the water, he saw the wind and waves and became afraid, then he got wet {Matthew 14.30} - Zechariah was initially overcome with fear when he saw the angel, Gabriel {Luke 1.12} - Fear is not specifically mentioned when the angel appeared to Mary, she was "greatly troubled at his words" {Luke 1.29} - However, the angel, Gabriel told Mary "don't be afraid" {Luke 1.30} - Other thoughts - Awe and fear seem to be synonymous in English {Luke 1.65} - John makes some interesting statements that I don't understand. {1 John 4.18} - There is no fear in love - Perfect love drives out fear - Fear involves punishment - The one who fears has not been perfected in love - In **Revelation 21.8**, Jesus said the eternal abode of the cowardly deilos [[G1169]] will be the lake of fire. The other three uses of this Greek word are **Matthew 8.26, Mark 4.40** and **Hebrews 12.28.** - The **Matthew 8.26, Mark 4.40** are in the stories of Jesus calming the sea. In each case, the disciples were afraid of losing their lives to the environmental elements. - The Helps Word study agrees with the Matthew and Mark usage. - Interestingly, Luke doesn't mention their fear in the **Luke 8.22-25** version - On the other hand, the contextual meaning in **Hebrews 12.28** is more in line with a proper awe of God. I doubt God would punish people with a proper awe of Him to the lake of fire. - So, I am very confused. It would seem that being afraid of environmental elements such as wind and waves will get you thrown into the lake of fire. However, fear of man just gets a rebuke. - 2019.12.30 - I am even more confused by my statement above. I don't know where I got the "fear of man just gets a rebuke" thought. --- ## Chapter-by-Chapter Notes --- ### Genesis 3 #### {10} ##### 2021.04.30 - Who - Adam - Scripture does NOT mention anything about Eve being afraid - Object of the Fear - God - Actions - Adam and Eve hid themselves - Result / Consequence - Ultimately, they were banished from the Garden - Command - - Fear Word - [[H3372]] - Notes / Context - After Adam and Eve sinned, they encountered God while He was walking in the Garden --- - Genesis 32 - Fear and distress [7] --- - Deuteronomy 6 - Date {2, 13, 24} - fear the Lord --- - Judges 7 - Date {10} - must not fear the gods of the Amorites - Date {27} - Gideon was afraid of his father's household --- - Psalm 2.11 --- - Psalm 5.7 - 2015.04.26 - Who - - Object of the Fear - God - Actions - in reverence I will bow down toward Your holy temple - Result / Consequence - reverence and worship of God - Command - - Fear Word - - Notes / Context - --- - Psalm 19.9 --- - Psalm 23.4 - 2021.08.09 - Who - David said he would NOT fear - Object of the Fear - evil - Actions - Perhaps comfort - Result / Consequence - One of the most quoted passages in the Bible - Command - - Fear Word - [[H3372]] / [[H3372a]] - Notes / Context - David said that despite walking through the valley of the shadow of death, he would not fear evil because the Lord was with him. - Additionally, the Lord’s rod and staff comforted David --- - Psalm 27.1-3 --- - Psalm 36.1, 12 - 2015.07.13 - Who - The wicked don't fear God - Object of the Fear - God - Actions - The wicked don't fear God - Result / Consequence - The evildoers lie fallen, thrown down and unable to rise - Command - - Fear Word - - Notes / Context - --- - Psalm 37 - 20200314 [1, 7, 8] - Although the BSB translated “charah” ([[H2734]]) into “fret”, it a better definition is “to burn or be kindled with anger” [1, 7, 8] --- - Psalm 46 - 20200325 {1-3} - First, the psalmist makes some statements about God and His character: (1) - God is our refuge - God is our strength - God is an ever-present help - The psalmist first makes a strong statement:  we will not fear (2) - He then builds his case by mentioning several really tough circumstances in which most people would fear: (1-3) - Times of trouble (1) - Earth is transformed (2) - Be still (10) --- - Psalm 91.5 --- - Psalm 115.11, 13 --- - Psalm 118.6 --- - Psalm 145.19 --- - Proverbs 8.13 - 2019.12.31 - Who - - Object of the Fear - the Lord - Actions - Hate evil - Result / Consequence - - Command - - Fear Word - Fear = [[H3374]] - Notes / Context - --- - Ecclesiastes 12 - 20200102 {13} - When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: Fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the whole duty of man. - Fear [12??] = [[H3372]] --- - Isaiah 11.1-3 - 2020.01.02 - Who - Jesus (stump of Jesse) - Object of the Fear - Lord - Actions - Delight - Result / Consequence - - Command - - Fear Word - - Notes / Context - - 20190325 {1-3} - Some have said this verse lists seven characteristics of the Holy Spirit. I can easily see six plus being the Spirit of the Lord [2] - Wisdom - Understanding - Counsel - Strength - Knowledge - fear of the Lord - Fear of the Lord must be important if this is a characteristic of the Spirit of the Lord and arguably Jesus. Verse 3 even says that "He" will delight in the fear of the Lord [2-3] - Spirit [2-x4] = [[H7307]] - Lord [2-x2] = [[H3068]] - Fear [2] = [[H3374]] --- - Isaiah 41.10 --- - Matthew 1 - 191230 {20} - See my comments on 190725. Perhaps, the verb phobeó ([[G5399]]) in this encounter with the angel wasn't an affect (noun) but rather the angel was telling Joseph to not run away from the marriage. The angel said, "don't be afraid" which could be "don't run away" - 190725 {1-20} - Context - The genealogy of Jesus [1-17] - The birth of Jesus [18-25] - Although Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, the Holy Spirit impregnated her [18] - As a result, Joseph was planning on divorcing her quietly [19] - However, an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him to not be afraid to embrace Mary as his wife because it was the Holy Spirit who was the father of the child [20] - I don't understand the use of "afraid" as the affect in this context.  I could understand shame [20] - One of the definitions of the verb phobeó ([G5399](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.qeokh6om3ndm "https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.qeokh6om3ndm")) is to put to flight.  I could see how Joseph would want to "run away" from the marriage with Mary.  I just don't understand is as an affect. {20} - Afraid {20 } = [[G5399]] --- - Matthew 2 - 22 = [[G5399]] --- - Matthew 6 - 20200314 {19-34} - Context - This section is about 2/3rds into Jesus’ sermon on the mount [25-34] - The preceding sections are: [19-24] - Treasures in heaven that addresses the focus on physical possessions (19-21] - The lamp of the body that addresses how we look at the physical possessions (22-24] - The top level summary of the “Do not worry” section addresses worrying (G3309) about life, food, drink and clothing (25-34] - Jesus makes several comparisons to communicate His message - We are more valuable than birds, yet God feeds them (26) - We are more valuable than grass and flowers, yet God adorns them better than Solomon in all his glory (28-30) - The Gentiles strive ([[G1934]]) after food, drink and clothing, but the Jew’s heavenly Father knows they need them (32) - Don’t worry about tomorrow, since today has enough problems to deal with (34) - In one of Jesus’ examples, He talked about the Gentiles striving after food, drink and clothing.  I feel like He is saying to the Jews, “Come on now, you are God’s chosen people.  Don’t be like the Gentiles who strive after worldly stuff and don’t trust God.  Rather, trust that He will provide for you.”  If my assessment is correct, then on one hand, that paragraph and perhap all of the sermon on the mount only applies to the Jews.  On the other hand, post cross and resurrection, I think He could be saying, “All the non-Christians chase after all that stuff.  However, you Christians should be trusting in you Father to provide” (31-33) - Jesus’ commands: (31,33-34) - Do not worry (31) - Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (33) - Don’t worry about tomorrow (34) - Promises: - We are more valuable than the birds (26) - God will clothe you (30) - If we seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, food, drink and clothing will be added (33) - See my thoughts on the meaning of ([[G3309]]) in 1 Corinthians 7. (25-34) --- - Matthew 8 - 190721 - Context {0} - The leper's prayer (1-4) - The faith of  the Centurion {5-13} - Jesus heals at Peter's house {14-17} - The cost of discipleship [18-22] - Jesus calms the storm [23-27] - The demons and the pigs [28-34] - Jesus and His disciples got into a boat heading to the region of  the Gadarenes [23, 28] - A violent storm came up on the sea but Jesus was sleeping [24] - The disciples woke Him saying, "Lord, save us! We are perishing!” [25] - Jesus replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” [26] - Then He rebuked the winds and the sea and it was perfectly calm [26] - Compare with **Mark 4.35-41** and **Luke 8.22-25** [23-27] - The Greek word for afraid is deilos ([G1169](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.90i2y5qqata "https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.90i2y5qqata")).  It is the same word used to describe those who will be sent to the lake of fire in **Revelation 21.8** [26] - Perishing [25] = [G0622](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.3jwd6ddpnwny "https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.3jwd6ddpnwny") - Afraid [26] = [G1169](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.90i2y5qqata "https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.90i2y5qqata") - Violent [24] = G3173 - Little faith [26] = [G3640](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.ozb86gxodhn9 "https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.ozb86gxodhn9") / [G3640b](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.1eybz6ke8mce "https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.1eybz6ke8mce") - Save [25] = [G4982](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.qll0qffjs0pu "https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hSnPqp9SPXrBgZG-UZh6mijzYv_xiK55anmifIyFQW0/edit#heading=h.qll0qffjs0pu") --- - Matthew 10 - 20200314 [0] - Context--Jesus was giving His “pep” talk to the 12 prior to sending them out on their first solo missionary journey.  [0] - One of the subjects He discussed was that He was sending them out like sheep among wolves.  As a result, they would be handed over to their councils and will be flogged in their synagogues.  Additionally, they will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them.  When that happened, they shouldn’t “worry” (G3309) about what to say because they will be given what to say in that hour. [16-25] - Fear [[G3309]] - 20190709 {29-31} - Context - The twelve apostles [1-4] - The ministry of the twelve [5-15] - Sheep among wolves.  Persecution by men [16-25] - Fear God alone [26-31] - Jesus commanded the disciples: - Don't be afraid of those who will persecute them [26] - Don't be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul [28] - However, they should fear the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell [28] - Jesus points out that even though two sparrows are sold for a penny, not one dies apart from the will of their Father.  Therefore, He commands them to not be afraid because they are worth more than many sparrows. However, it is the merchants lamenting here. [15] - Object: ? God ?
