### Children and Parents {1-4}
250409 {1-3}
- Paul starts off this chapter with an exportation to children. He paraphrases the first of the 10 commandments that deal with interpersonal relationships in Exodus 20.12 & Deuteronomy 5.16. Paul added commentary that of the 10-commandments, this was the first with a promise. As I read the 10-commandments, this is the only commandment with a positive promise. {1-3}
250405 {4}
- What does "provoke" mean in verse 4? Compare with Colossians 3.21
- It appears the two Greek words ([[G3949]] & [[G2042]]) translated into "provoke" in both passages mean something similar: incite to anger; enrage; exasperate
- According to Paul, the consequence of provoking our children is wrath or discouragement
- I think a good example of warning in these two passages is Shawn's father on the show Psych
- Instead of provoking, Paul extorts fathers to bring our kids up ([[G1625]]) in the discipline ([[G3809]]) and instruction ([[G3559]]) of the Lord.
### Serving with Honor {5-9}
250418
- Compare with **Colossians 3.22-25** and **1 Timothy 6.1-2**
- In each of the parallel passage, Paul does not exhort the "masters" as he does in verse 9
- Although these passages could address actually slavery, I think a good use-case in the US today are employer / employee relationships
- Paul emphasized "doing the will of God" from our hearts {6}
- It's not clear to me whether "Master" in **verse 9** refers to Father or Son much like "Lord" which occurs twice in **verse 7**. However, based on other uses, I think it is likely that "Lord" refers to Jesus. So, if my assumption is true about Lord, then there are four clear references to Jesus in verses 5-8 and one not-so-clear reference to Father. Again, if my conclusions are correct, then "He" and "Master" refer to Jesus. {5-9}
### The Full Armor of God {10-20}
250517
- In a conversation with [[Name_Key#^nk-65|M]] the other day, he mentioned **Nehemiah 8.10** in the context of "joy." He was not certain whether the verse refers to joy of man toward God, or God's joy. Based on a search of parallel passages, I felt the best interpretation is "God's joy."
- Then Nehemiah told them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send out portions to those who have nothing prepared, since today is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” {Nehemiah 8.10 (BSB)}
- Since I am struggling with what it means to "be strong in the Lord," I thought the two could be related
- I have some questions about all this and very few answers.
- Is there anything I do that affects God's joy toward me; for or against??
- Do I understand correctly:
- according to Nehemiah, we get out strength from God's joy
- Our strength / ability to make our stand against the devil's schemes is related to God's joy
- How do I "appropriate" God's joy / strength?
250507
- Paul commanded the Ephesians (and by extension, us too) to "put on the full armor of God!" He went on to provide a reason for doing such; so we can make our stand against the devil's schemes.
- In the first two verses of this section (10-11) Paul mentions two "tools" / "resources" available to us
- His mighty power {10}
- full armor of God {11}
- As mentioned in the bullet above (repeating here again for emphasis), the purpose of these tools, the reason they were given to us is to enable us to "make your stand against the devil’s schemes"
- Although I fully intend to study the rest of the verses in this section, there is enough in the first two verses on which to study and meditate for a very long time!!
250425
- Continuing the word study of **verse 10**, I suspect "mighty" ([[G2904]]) and "power" ([[G2479]]) are important words.
250420
- Finally {10}
- Paul starts off this section with "finally." ([[G3064]]) I believe good exegesis requires figuring out what went before the "finally."
- At this point, I don't have any plans to go back through the first five chapters to detail what Paul meant. However, if there is any question about context, I'll have to look to those passages for insight.
- An interesting / odd note. There are only two occurrences of ([[G3064]]) in the Bible, both by Paul; one each in chapter 6 of his first two epistles, Galatians and Ephesians respectively.
- be strong {10}
- Next, Paul exhorts us to "be strong" ([[G1743]]) in the Lord and His mighty power
- At this point, I must confess I don't know what that means or how to do it. I am hoping that through this study, God will reveal it to me. I am thinking it is this phrase that is the key to this section, if not our whole human struggle against the devil.
### Final Greetings {21-24}
