# Covenant & Oath Bible Study ## Background 2024.10.08 - [[My_Military_Oath|My Military Oath]] 2021.09.20 - We had a great conversation about [[Covenant]] at [[Church]] yesterday. - It seems to me that there are lots of similarities between a contract and a covenant. - [[Name_Key#^nk-3|M]] and [[Name_Key#^nk-4|F]] believe that there is a significant difference between contracts and covenant. However, I did not understand their position. - So, I figured I should do a Bible study on the subject. ## Questions - What are the similarities and differences between: - a covenant and a contract? - a covenant and an oath? - a pledge of allegiance and a covenant or oath? - a covenant / oath and a vow ## ToDo - ToDo Study - “oath” - [[G3727]] - [[H7621]] - [[G1242]] - [[G1303]] - ToDo Transfer - DONE - Copy notes from 2021.09.20.0436 - Covenant.ods ## Takeaways - Exodus 34 - Based on this chapter, the covenant God made with Israel was one sided {10} - It is possible for people to make a covenant with other people {15} - Numbers 30 - It would seem to me that a vow (H5088), oath (H7621) and pledge (H0632) are very similar. At the very least, they are the same when it comes to God's command to not break His word but do everything He has promised (H3318). - Matthew 5 - Jesus seems to imply that an oath and a vow are very similar and we are NOT to break either of them (33) - On the other-hand, Jesus commanded: simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No (37) - Galatians 3 - A new law does not: - revoke the previously established covenant - nullify the promise - James 5 - James said we should not swear by heaven, earth or an oath (12) - It is interesting that James used a different word for "oath" than Jesus. Compare with **Matthew 5.33** (12) - He went on to say that we should simply say yes or no o we will not fall under judgment (G2920). Compare with **Matthew 5.37** (12) - I am guessing the "judgment" part is the consequence of failing to keep the oath (12) - Extra Biblical Info - Government Oaths - Outside of marriage, most people will NOT be required to swear an oath. However, many public servants are required to do so. - 10 U.S. Code § 688 - According to US Code, retired officers are subject to recall ## Notes Genesis 6.18 - Date {18} - [[H1285]] --- Genesis 9.9-17 - Date {9-17} - H1285 x7 --- Genesis 14.13 - Date {13} - H1285 --- Genesis 15.18 - Date {18} - H1285 --- Genesis 17.2-21 - Date {2-21} - H1285 x13 --- Genesis 21 - Date {27 & 32} - H1285 --- Genesis 24 - Date - H7621 (8) --- Genesis 26 - Date - H7621 (3) - H1285 (28) --- Genesis 31.44 - Date {44} - H1285 --- Exodus 2.24 - Date {24} - H1285 --- Exodus 6.4-5 - Date {4-5} - H1285 x2 --- Exodus 19.5 - Date - H1285 --- Exodus 22 Date - H7621 (11) --- Exodus 23.32 - Date - H1285 --- Exodus 24.7-8 - Date - H1285 x2 --- Exodus 31.16 - Date - H1285 --- [[Exodus_34|Exodus 34]] - Date {12} - H1285 - 2021.09.25 - Based on this chapter, the covenant ([[H1285]]) God made ([[H3772]]) with Israel was one sided {10} - Based on **verse 15**, it is possible for people to make a covenant with other people - Based on these two verses, it could be interpreted that the covenant is two way. In particular: {27-28} - God made a covenant with Moses and with Israel {27} - **Verse 28** says that the covenant and the “Ten Commandments” are the same. However, “commandments” is actually “dabar”, [[H1697]] which generally means “words”. Out of 1441 occurrences, the NASB translates it into “commandments” only 4 times {28} --- Leviticus 2.11-16 - H1285 --- Leviticus 5 Date - H7621 (4) --- Leviticus 24.3-4 - Date (8-9) - H1285 - 2021.09.20 {3-4} - Covenant is not in the Hebrew - BSB Note: {3a} The Testimony  refers to the stone tablets in the ark of the covenant inscribed with the Ten Commandments. --- Leviticus 26.1-13 - Date (1-13, 15, 25, 42-45) - H1285 --- Numbers 5 Date - H7621 (21) --- Numbers 10.33 - {33} --- Numbers 18 - {19} --- Numbers 25 - {12-13} --- ### Numbers 30 2024.05.13 - Based on verse 2, it would seem to me that a vow (H5088), oath (H7621) and pledge (H0632) are very similar. At the very least, they are the same when it comes to God's command to not break His word but do everything He has promised (H3318). (2) - It is interesting that the Hebrew word "yatsa" (H3318) translated "he has promised" in verse 2 really means "to go or come out." An example from **Genesis 1.12**, "The earth produced" vegetation. (2) - a person's "word" is wrapped up in all this too - The rest of the chapter deals with women vowing an oath, etc (3-16) - Compare with **Matthew 5.33** (2) #### Outbound Links - Scripture - [[Genesis_01]] - [[Numbers_30]] - [[Matthew_05]] - Topics - [[Covenant]] - [[Oath]] - [[Pledge]] - [[Promise]] - [[Vow]] - Verses - 2 - Hebrew Words - pledge ([[H0632]]) - word ([[H1697]]) - promise ([[H3318]]) - vow ([[H5088]]) - oath ([[H7621]]) - Greek Words - - Study - [[Covenant_&_Oath_Study|Covenant Bible Study]] - Other - --- Deuteronomy 7 Date - H7621 (8) --- Joshua 2 Date - H7621 (17, 20) --- Joshua 9 Date - H7621 (20) --- ### Judges 21 Date - Notes #### Outbound Links - Scripture - Studies - [[Covenant_&_Oath_Study|Covenant Bible Study]] - Topics - [[Covenant]] - [[Oath]] - [[Pledge]] - [[Vow]] - Verses - - Hebrew Words - H7650 (1) - H7621 (5) - - Greek Words - --- ### 1 Samuel 14 Date - H7621 (26) ### 2 Samuel 21 Date - Breaking oaths have consequences {1-2} - [[H7650]] {2} - H7621 (7) --- 1 Kings 2 Date - H7621 (43) --- 1 Chronicles 16 Date - H7621 (16) --- 2 Chronicles 15 Date - H7621 (15) --- Nehemiah 6 Date - H7621 (18) --- Nehemiah 10 Date - H7621 (29) --- Psalm 25 - {14} --- Psalm 105 Date - H7621 (9) --- ### Ecclesiastes 8 2024.06.12 - Solomon said: - because of my oath (H7621) before God (H0430) - I should "keep the king's command" #### Outbound Links - Scripture - [[Ecclesiastes_08]] - Studies - [[Covenant_&_Oath_Study|Covenant Bible Study]] - Topics - [[Oath]] - Verses - 2 - Hebrew Words - [[H0430]] (2) - [[H7621]] (2) - Greek Words - --- ### Ecclesiastes 9 2024.06.12 - Solomon continues his soliloquy on all is vanity - This section focuses on death both to the good and the bad - Solomon addresses several classes of people in this discourse.
