# Clothing in the Bible Study
## Background
- See [[Background-NAU_Studies|Background - NAU Studies]] for the background info
## Questions
- What are the divine tensions?
- What does the Bible say about clothing in general?
- What does scripture say about how we are to be clothed?
- Is there a difference between the OT and the NT?
- Is there a connection between baptism and clothed with the Holy Spirit?
- **Luke 24.49**?
- [Baptism Bible Study](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AKsBt0yxaOvY3o8KG6rkzcol1to-1Y8O-jmhkX9aVzw/edit)
- How do I need to realign my thoughts about the NAU stuff to be in line with scripture?
- What is the connection between being clothed in the Holy Spirit and and textile clothing?
- What is the connection between “shame” and “nakedness” and the need for “clothes” to avoid exposing our shameful nakedness.
- What did Jesus / His disciples command, model or discuss
- about textile clothing?
- about being clothed in characteristics?
- What did Jesus / His disciples command, model or discuss about being clothed in characteristics?
## ToDo
- Research “clothed in righteousness”
- Look at the following words
- [[H3801]] - Tunic, garment, robe
- [[G5509]] - undergarment
- Compare the verbs and nouns of clothe / clothes, etc.
- Apply one or more of these topics to each note:

- From Life of Messiah - E. The Crucifixion, § 176-178; 8) The dividing of the garments
- 2017.05.24
- Read John’s account of how they divided up His garments in John 19:23 – 24.
- Part of the procedure in the Roman system is that the soldiers involved in the crucifixion would have the rights to the clothes of the victim as spoil.
- Another misconception we have from crucifixion paintings is that we see Jesus wearing a loincloth. Actually they were crucified naked. In the Jewish context that would add to the shame of it all.
- The average Jewish male of first century Israel wore five pieces of clothing.
- The upper garment, also called the outer garment.
- The inner garment or undergarment or tunic.
- Some kind of a head covering.
- Shoes or sandals.
- The outer robe or the outer coat, which by itself was the largest single piece of cloth.
- At each crucifixion site four soldiers would be involved, so each one walks away with a piece of clothing. One had the upper garment, one the under garment, one the head covering, and one the shoes.
- The outer garment - Because the outer garment was the largest single piece of cloth they would normally tear it into four parts and every soldier walked away with a piece of cloth.
- But the kind of coat He wore was the kind normally worn by the wealthy class. And because of its uniqueness they decided not to tear it apart, but to gamble for it and cast lots for it. And one soldier walked away with the whole robe, fulfilling prophecy also in **Psalm 22:18**.
- They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.
- We know from earlier in the gospels that Jesus lived on the poverty level. So how would He get this kind of a coat? We do not know for certain, but we have one hint that we saw back in Luke 8:1-3. His ministry was financed by several wealthy women. It could be that one of these wealthy women gave Him this coat.
## TL;DR
- There are only a few places in the Bible that God commands people to wear textile clothes:
- [[Exodus_12|Exodus_12.11]] - The Israelites when celebrating the Passover just prior to leaving Egypt
- The priests going into the _**Holy of Holies**_.
- Ezekiel ??
- In [[Genesis_03|Genesis 3.21]], God supplies environmental protection for Adam and Eve. However, He doesn’t command them to wear them.
- Jesus seemed to have no problem advocating nudity
- [[Matthew_05|Matthew 5.40]] - He suggested giving away all your clothes if you are sued
- [[Mark_10|Mark 10.21]] - Jesus told the rich guy to sell _**everything**_ he had
- Jesus commanded us to not worry about clothing. [[Matthew_06|Matthew 6.31]]
- Jesus said God would clothe us more than the lilies of the field more than Solomon. I am pretty sure He isn’t talking about textile clothing [[Matthew_06|Matthew 6.28-32]]
- God is clothed in characteristics, not textile fabric
- Robed in splendor and majesty, covers Himself with light as if it were a garment [[Psalm_104|Psalm 104.1-2]]
- Jesus is to be clothed with a belt of righteousness around his waist and a belt of faithfulness around His loins. [[Isaiah_11|Isaiah 11.5]]
- Righteousness like a breastplate[[Isaiah_59|Isaiah 59.17]]
- the helmet of salvation on His head [[Isaiah_59|Isaiah 59.17]]
- Garments of vengeance for clothing [[Isaiah_59|Isaiah 59.17]]
- Wrapped Himself in a cloak of zeal [[Isaiah_59|Isaiah 59.17]]
- We are to be clothed in characteristics
- Priests are to be clothed in righteousness and salvation [[Psalm_132|Psalm 132.9 & 16]]
- Gideon was clothed in the Spirit of the Lord [[Judges_06|Judges 6.34]]
- The white robes in [[Revelation_07|Revelation 7.9-14]] worn by those who made it through the tribulation represent character, not textile clothing
- The burial clothes in the story of Lazarus are connected with the skins God gave to Adam and Eve. When they sinned, they died and God gave them burial clothes. Now that Jesus raised him from the dead, He said to remove the grave clothes. This is about the closest thing to a command to take off our our clothes after accepting Jesus as our savior. [[John_11|John 11.44]]
- Truth is to be fastened around the reproductive area [[Ephesians_06|Ephesians 6.14]]
- The Hebrew word for apparel [[H0899]] / [[H0899b]] and/or clothes comes from bagad [[H0898]] which is a verb that means to act treacherously/deceitfully. At least in the Hebrew mind, it sounds like clothing was associated with treachery. Kinda reminds me of **Genesis 3.1-7**

- Compare Adam & Eve's fig leaves with the [[Belt_of_Truth|belt of truth]] in **Ephesians 6.14-15**. A possible "explanation" for the fig leaves around the waist (Somewhere I have notes detailing the scriptural basis for the following. Until it is found and referenced here, the following should not be accepted as biblical truth)
- [[A&E]] were deceived by the serpent and chose to "cover-up" the lie with fig leaves wrapped around their waists
- God's question to Adam provides some clues to explain A & E's actions; “Who told you that you were [[naked]] ([[H5903]])?” God knew it was the serpent (i.e. Satan) but scripture wants us to know too.
- [[Truth]] is the only counter the serpent's "lie"
- But why the waist for the fig leaves and why the waist for truth? I think Satan suggested the location in an attempt to thwart procreation.
- We are made in God's image. {Genesis 1.26-27}
- Arguably the first command to mankind is “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it." {Genesis 1.28}
- I think Satan wants to prevent the reproduction of God's image. So, he suggested to A & E that the appropriate response to their sin was to cover up their waists.
#### 2023.04.19 {21}
- WRT my note below dated 2016.06.26, arguably, God DID command the OT priests to wear certain outfits when they did their ministry
#### 2016.06.26 {21}
- Nowhere in the Bible does God command us to wear textile clothes. In this verse, when God "clothed" ([[H3847]]) A&E, He was supplying environmental protection for Adam and Eve.
- Garments - ([[H3801]]) other translations - clothing, coats
- [[Clothing_Textile_People]]
#### 2015.06.25
- Many of the occurrences of "skin" [[H5785]] refer to human skin [21]
- Most people assume God killed some sort of animal to make the garments of skin. However, there is nothing in the passage to require that the garment be made of animal skin. [21]

- After Joseph’s brothers “stripped” him of the robe, it isn’t clear if he was naked or had an undergarment. Considering Israel’s wealth, it is most probable that Joseph had some sort of undergarment. [23]

### Genesis 39
#### 2013.05.10 {12}
- I came across the Hebrew word, "beged" ([[H0899]]) while reading **Genesis 39.12**.
- Of 217 occurrence in the NET, all but two of them are translated as some form or [[clothing]]. The other two are blankets and saddlecloths. The latter two are again some type of fabric.
- What I found interesting, is that the first definition of the word is "treachery, deceit".
- Although the NET never translates "beged" as treachery or deceit, the first definition is such.
- There has to be some sort of significance to this observation. I have always felt that clothing was connected to deceit. It is involved in hiding who we really are from the sight of those around us.

2022.04.21 {5}
- In [[Exodus_03|Exodus 3.5]], when Moses went over to the burning bush, God said to him, ““Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take [[H5394]] off [[H5921]] your {feet} [[H7272]] sandals [[H5275]], for the place [[H4725]] where you are standing [[H5975]] is holy [[H6944]] ground [[H0127]].”
- I don’t understand what it is about sandals that “defile” the ground on which someone stands.
- I could make a wild guess that it is [[NAU]] related, but it is just that, a wild guess.
- Another thing I find interesting is that in **Acts 7**, Stephen quoted this statement when he was retelling the story about Israel’s history. Of all the things in Israel’s past, why did Stephen feel it was necessary to quote this phrase? See my note in this study on **Acts 7.33**

#### Notes
- 2023.01.11 {1-13}
- The context of imminent travel notwithstanding, I wonder if the command to be dressed also has a meaning of being covered by Jesus' blood.
- [[Clothing_Characteristics_People]]
- 2012.05.04 {1-13}
- God gives a command for the Israelites to be "dressed" to eat the Passover. {11}
- It seems from the context and the various translations that God wants them to be "dressed for travel". There is no indication from the context or the various translations that God is concerned about someone's genitals showing while they eat.
- Here are some of the other translations. My comments are in parenthesis and italicized.
- BSB - fully dressed for travel
- NET - dressed for travel
- NIV - with your cloak (*outer garment*) tucked into your belt
- NASB - with your loins girded
- ESV - with your belt fastened
- NLT- Be fully dressed
- MSG - Be fully dressed
- BBE- dressed as if for a journey
- NKJV - with a belt on your waist (*I guess you could be almost nude as long as you have a belt*)
- NRSV - your loins girded
- KJV - with your loins girded
- The context is clear. When the Israelites were leaving Egypt, they were in a hurry and God wanted to ensure they got out quickly. I am reminded of the passage of Lot and Sodom and how the angels were insistent that they hurry.
- Another passage that comes to mind is [[Revelation_16|Revelation 16.15]], "Behold, I come like a thief! Blessed is he who stays awake and keeps his clothes with him, so that he may not go [[Naked]] and be shamefully exposed." NIV This passage seems to have a similar message. Be ready to go!

- In **verse 38**, the BSB translation to the English words "tunic" ([[H4055]]) and "armor" ([[H8302]]) seem to be questionable. {38}
- Based on the various translations shown below and other studies ([[H3801]]), I think of a tunic as an undergarment rather than "military attire"

2023.04.01
- A thought about belt / "truth".
- Compare with my question below on 2017.10.04
- Jonathan stripped himself of his articles of textile clothing
- I noted the possibility that doing so was a picture of our relationship with Jesus
- However, I didn't have a good thought about the belt
- What if ... I am supposed to strip myself of "my truth" and surrender to THE TRUTH and put on Jesus
- A similar thing could be said about the robe. Symbolically, I surrender "my kingship" over my life to the real KING
2017.10.04
- Some have said this could be a picture of our relationship with Jesus. If so, then I need to:
- Be knitted to Jesus’ soul [1]
- Love Jesus as I love my own soul [1, 3]
- Make a covenant with Jesus [3]
- Strip myself of:
- Robe (honor, my “kingship”) [4]
- [[Armor]] (self protection) [4]
- [[Sword]] (offensive weapon) [4]
- [[Bow_(weapon)]] (offensive weapon) [4]
- Belt (?? [[Truth]] ??) [4]

- Everyone had multiple changes of clothes (like in modern western culture ) then it wouldn't be a problem to take a few min to change into clean clothing
- On the other hand, if ...
- The passage was accurately translated as "removed our clothes"
- Since most people only had one change of clothing, it would mean going naked
- In light of the hard work and the possibility of war, it does make sense to wear clothing 24/7
- It is interesting that the KJB added to the Hebrew (even put some of it in italics). The added phrase strongly implies the average person would be naked while doing laundry

- Clearly the articles of clothing that Job put on were characteristics and not textile [14]
- Job clearly connects common articles of [[Clothing_Textile_Items|textile clothing]] (robe, turban) with a [[Clothing_Characteristics|characteristic]] (justice) [14]
- What is interesting is that the root of robe “meil” [[H4598]] is “maal “[[H4598]] is [[H4603]] which means to act unfaithfully or treacherously. However, I’m not absolutely sure what’s the significance.

- Robed in splendor and majesty
- Covers Himself with light as if it were a garment
- Here is one more example of God being clothed; not in textile fabrics, but in characteristics, splendor, majesty and light.
- Based on these verses and many others, it is reasonable to "assume" that in other passages that mention God's clothing, they aren't talking about textile fabrics. This is consistent with the NT passages that command us to be clothed in various characteristics.

### Isaiah 32
#### Notes
151119
- The Lord is saying, via Isaiah, to women (in particular those who are at ease and complacent), that they should strip off their fine clothing to the point of being bare, then put sackcloth around their waists. This would imply they are now topless. {11}
- This passage would suggest God is telling those women to go topless. {11}
- This is the only occurrence of ([[H6209]]) out of four that has to do with any form of clothing. The other three talk about razing cities or palaces.
- The siege will continue until the Spirit is poured out from on high. {15}

- On the other hand, Isaiah talks about The Lord's clothing: [17]
- He put on **righteousness** like a breastplate
- He put on the helmet of salvation on His head

- Oil of joy

- Later in the chapter, it seems that Jesus is praising the Lord because He: [10]

- As a groom wears a priestly headdress (See the definitions for [[H6287]] / [[H6287a]]. They aren't straight forward.)

2017.06.20
- The nouns “clothes & clothing” are not in the Greek [8]
- The word “fine” refers to soft or effeminate. It is the same word that Paul uses in his list of sins that will keep people out of heaven **1 Corinthians 6.9** {8}
- See also **Luke 7.25** in this study [8]
2016.09.12
- No SPEC [8]
- I am confused by **verse 8**. All of the translations are very similar. However, the Greek doesn’t have a word for clothing in either of the two occurrences in the English. [8]
- There are two verbs ([[G0294]] & [[G5409]]) related to being dressed or wearing. The first of these ([[G0294]]) is also used in **Matthew 6.30** and **Luke 12.28** to describe how God clothes the grass. [8]
- The word for “fine” ([[G3120]]) is better translated “soft” or effeminate [8]
- See my notes on [[2011.04.05.1058_Matthew_11|Matthew 11.7-10]] [8]

### Matthew 15
2016.09.13
- S > We need to avoid elevating the precepts of men as doctrine of God. We need to avoid worshiping our own rules. [9]
- The context of this statement by Jesus is the traditions of men versus true worship. The specific tradition in the context is hand washing before eating. It doesn’t specifically address clothing. [9]
- However, we (men) have been teaching a false doctrine about clothing. We need to worship the creator and stop condemning His [[Image]] that He created. [9]
- I’m not sure if there is a SPEC here, but clearly Jesus is teaching. Some of the things I see in His teaching include: [10-20]
- His teaching was in the context of food
- This is a follow-on teaching to the one above dealing with man-made rules
- It’s not what goes in our mouths that defile us
- It is what comes out of our mouths and hearts that defiles us
### Matthew 16
2016.05.17
- Jesus’ command: Deny myself and follow Him [24-27]
- Jesus’ example: Deny myself and follow Him [24-27]
- Sin to avoid: Attempting to save my life [24-27]
- Promise to claim: If I lose my life for His sake, I will find my life [24-27]
- Clearly, the context in which Jesus is speaking is His death. I think most people extend the analogy to any worldly thing based on **Matthew 16.26**. [24-27]
- Jesus said we must deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him. Since He was crucified [[Naked]] and rose from the dead [[Naked]], shouldn't we follow Him [[Naked]]? [24-27]
- Stripping off my clothes is a means of "denying myself". I am laying aside my [[Pride]] and exposing myself to everyone. I am laying aside all pretension before God and man. [24-27]

- Although [[G1131]] clearly means “no covering”, it is clear from the context that Paul isn’t talking about a textile covering, but a (2) heavenly dwelling.
- Based on **verse 3**, it would seem that “unclothed” in verse 4 means stark [[Naked]]

- At the wedding celebration of the Lamb, His bride will have made herself ready (7). **Verse 8** goes on to explain how she was made ready.
- At first glance, it seems that it is all about a textile covering that is bright and clean. However, John adds a parenthetical explanation. I guess Jesus wanted us to know He isn't concerned about textile fabrics. Apparently, the "textile" part of the bride's clothing, the "linen" refers to the "righteous deeds of the saints." [[Clothing_Characteristics_People]]
- So, it IS very important to Jesus that His bride be "covered", however, it seems that the covering has nothing to do with textile fabrics. It has to do with HOW we live our lives, HOW we spend our 24/7.

- From Life of Messiah - E. The Crucifixion, § 176-178; 8) The dividing of the garments
### Extra-Biblical
- What was the significance of the ephod?
- [[ephod_GotQuestions.org.pdf]]
- The connection between clothing and idols comes up again in this article about the ephod.
- Some scholars have suggested that the connection between the idol and the garment is that the idol was originally clothed in a linen garment, and the term ephod gradually came to describe the idol as a whole.
