# Be Ready Bible Study
## Background
- Started - 2019.11.18
- What does it mean to [[Be_Ready|be ready]] for Jesus' return?
- This study is about Jesus' return and our need to be ready
- It is focused on our need to be ready
- It is not about trying to figure out when it will happen
- What does readiness look like?
- Compare with: Suffering, Persecution, Endurance and Perseverance Bible Study <https://docs.google.com/document/d/14U1ilq-tGHyXQ8GFW9vegiWaAjNT7zOyTZcsNe_7Bsg/edit#>
- 2019.11.26 - Decided to merge Revival Bible study into this one
- Started - 2019.07.29
- What does the Bible say about revival?
- What are the divine tensions?
- What is keeping the American Church from revival?
- What is "revival"? Is it the same thing as returning to God?
- How is repent in terms of revival different than repentance as it applies to salvation? Compare with the Repent, Believe, Obedience and Salvation Bible Study <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FPp6Cu2mkfnfIAr7ULs6iAVi9yX9m5wLsNQsCo2WhC0/edit?usp=sharing>
- 2019.11.26 - Decided to merge [[Wake-Up|Wake Up]] Bible study into this one
- Started 180131
- What does Jesus mean when He tells the church in Sardis to “wake up and strengthen what remains”? [[Revelation_03|Revelation 3.2-3]]

## Questions
- What does it look like to [[Be_Ready|be ready]]?
- Be ready for what?
- What should I be doing to "be ready"?
- How should I help / encourage others to "be ready"?
## ToDo

- Noah got drunk on wine and Ham, the father of Canaan did something that caused a curse on Canaan
- Notes
- Noah "awoke" ([[H3364]]) from his drunkenness and learned what Ham had done. {24}
- It isn't clear from scripture what Ham / Canaan did, but it did earn them a curse
- Perhaps the "be ready" lesson here is to not get drunk (on anything) because we are to be ready at all times

- Jacob's ladder {10-17}
- Notes
- Jacob had an encounter with [[Lord|the Lord]] while he was asleep
- Not all "[[Sleep]]" is wrong
- However, I am not sure about Jacob's reaction to the dream when he [[Wake-Up|woke up]] ([[H3364]]) from his [[Sleep|sleep]] ([[H8142]])
- He claimed the location: {17}

---
- [[Genesis_41|Genesis 41]]
- 2022.11.17
- Context
- Pharaoh's dreams and Joseph's interpretation
- Notes
- Much like Jacob's ladder dream, Pharaoh had an encounter with God during a [[Dreams|dream]]
- "God" occurs nine times in this chapter. Each of these is some form of [[H0430]].
- In **verse 38**, Pharaoh implies the "Spirit ([[H7307]]) of God ([[H0430]]) (or the gods) abides" in Joseph
- Some form of "dream" ([[H2492]] / [[H2492b]]) or ([[H2472]]) occurs 14 times in this chapter. In each case, the dream was the form that God chose to speak to Pharaoh {1, 5, 7, 8, 11-x2, 12, 15-x2, 17, 22,, 25, 26, 32}
- There are three occurrences of some form of "awoke" or "woke up" ( [[H3364]]) in this chapter. In each case, Pharaoh woke up from his dream in which God had been speaking to him {4, 7, 21}
- There are five occurrences of some form of to interpret ([[H6622]]) in t his chapter. In each case, it has to do with understanding what God is saying to Pharaoh and explain it to him {8, 12, 13, 15-x2}
- tl;dr
- There's no indication that sleep is wrong and every indication that God speaks in dreams while sleeping
---
- [[Deuteronomy_04|Deuteronomy 4.16-28]]
- 2020.02.12
- The context is Moses final words to the Israelites. He warns them that when they get into the promised land and have children and grandchildren there, if they turn away from God to serve idols, God will scatter them among the nations
- However, if from there, they seek the Lord, they will find Him if they seek Him with all their heart and with all their soul.
- Moses goes on to say that in the later days they will return to the Lord and listen to His voice
- Finally, Moses reminds the people that the Lord is a merciful God who will not abandon or destroy them, nor forget the covenant he made with their fathers

- [[Luke_22|Luke 22.63-65]]
- [[John_19|John 19.1-15]]
- This passage is about Jesus. However, **verses 4-5** resonated with me this morning {4-11}
- As Isaiah wrote about Jesus, he said that the Lord gave Him a tongue of discipleship. He went on to say that the purpose was to sustain the weary with a word {4}
- The second half of this verse has to do with listening to God in the morning {4-5}
- God awakens Jesus morning by morning {4}
- God awakens Jesus' ear to listen as a disciple {5}
- God opened Jesus' ears {5}
- Jesus wasn't rebellious {5}
- Jesus didn't turn back {5}
- There are "promises" that Isaiah wrote about. They specifically apply to Jesus, but maybe could be extended to us {7-9}
- Since God helps me, I won't be disgraced or put to shame {7}
- Because of my confidence in God, I can set my face like flint {7}
- Since God is near {8}
- Who will dare to contend with me
- let us confront each other
- Whoever has a case against me, let him approach me
- Since God helps me {9}
- who condemns me?
- All those who condemn me will wear out like a garment, moths will devour them
- Verses 10-11 seem to change the focus from being directed at to Jesus to the rest of us {10-11}
- Verse 10 is exhorting us to trust in the name of the Lord and lean on Him. It is directed at those who: {10}
- fear the Lord
- obeys the voice of Jesus
- Or, those who currently walk in darkness with no light
- On the other-hand, those who trust in earthly things will "lie down" in a place of torment {11}
- Even though I start my day with a short devotion before I do virtually anything, and often spend 15-30 minutes in prayer before getting out of bed, I want to listen better and obey better {11}

- [[Joel_02|Joel 2.1-32]]
- 2019.07.29
- Context
- The army of locusts {1-11}
- Within the context of an army of locusts invading a city, there is imagery of a human army and a heavenly army
- Return with all your heart {12-17}
- Restoration promised {18-27}
- I will pour out my Spirit {28-32}
- Notes
- Joel started this chapter with an alarm {1-2}
- Blow the trumpet in Zion
- Sound the alarm
- Let everyone tremble
- About the Day of the Lord he said,
- Not only is it coming, but it is at hand
- It will be a day of darkness and gloom
- A day of clouds and blackness
- In verse 11, Joel said: {11}
- The army was the Lord's
- Mighty are those who obey the Lord's command
- Joel says: {13}
- Rend your hearts and not your garments
- Return to the Lord your God
- For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, and abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending disaster.
- Verses 15-17 seem to be the "method" of repentance / [[Revival]] promoted by Joel. He said: {15-17}
- Gather the people for a fast
- Blow the trumpet in Zion
- Proclaim a sacred assembly
- Sanctify the congregation
- Assemble the aged
- Gather the children, even the nursing babies
- Even the groom and bride are not exempt
- The priests should
- Minister before the Lord
- Weep between the porch and altar
- Entreat the Lord saying
- Spare your people
- Don't make your heritage a reproach, an object of scorn among the nations
- Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?
- The next line talks about the "Day of the Lord" and how dreadful it will be and asks "Who can endure it" {11}
- The Lord declared, "return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning.” {12}
- So, after 11 verses talking about an invading army on the "Day of the Lord", the next section is about returning to the Lord with all my heart {12-17}
- The rest of this section, verses 13-17 are Joel's exhortation based on God's declaration in verse 12. {12-17}
- Joel muses: Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing behind Him {14}
- The second half of verse 14 is hard to understand what Joel is communicating. After reading all the various translations, I think the meaning of the whole verse is: If the Israelites will repent, then maybe God will bless them so they will have grain and drink offerings to give to the Lord. Considering the first 10 verses of this chapter talks about the locusts destroying everything, it would require a blessing from God in order to have anything to offer as a sacrifice. {14}
- The specifics in the next section dealing with the Lord's promised restoration may or may not apply to today. {18-27}
- Peter quoted verses 28-32 in [[Acts_02|Acts 2]] and connected it with the outpouring of the [[Holy Spirit]]. So, it seems reasonable to think that it applies to us. {28-32}

- As I was meditating on this verse this morning, the phrase, "Your kingdom come" really stuck with me
- What does it mean that His kingdom come?
- Come to where?
- Come from where?
- What will it look like when it comes?
- Although Jesus taught this prayer over 2000 years ago, it doesn't seem that His kingdom has come yet.
- When will it come?
- What do we need to do to be ready for His kingdom coming?

- Jesus' response to the disciples' questions about when will Jesus return and the end of the age is a long answer. Matthew recorded it in the rest of chapter 24 and all of chapter 25. Most of His answer related to this study on Being Ready. {3}
- Although Jesus mentions some signs, He says these are the beginning of birth pains. The signs He mentioned are: {4-8}
- Many will come in the name of Christ claiming to be Him and they will deceive many
- Wars and rumors of wars
- Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom
- Famines and earthquakes
- More signs {9-12}
- The apostles (and maybe future disciples) because of Jesus' name will be:
- persecuted and killed
- hated by all nations
- many will fall away and betray and hate each other
- many false prophets will arise and mislead many
- Because of this multiplication of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold
- Jesus offers three promises in the midst of a lot of bad stuff {13-13}
- the one who perseveres to the end will be saved
- the gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all the nations
- then the end will come
- Based on Luke 21.20-24, I think (other Jewish scholars agree) verses 15-22 apply to the destruction of Jerusalem and has already occurred. {15-22}
- In the next few paragraphs, Jesus talks about His return {15-22}
- 2019.11.18
- The disciples asked Jesus two questions related to when He will return. However, I will attempt to use Jesus' answer to learn more about readiness
- We need to persevere to the end
- Jesus said the gospel of the kingdom "will be" preached in all the world {14}
- Other translations for "will be preached" {14}
- will be preached - NIV, NLT, BSB, NET, WEB
- will be proclaimed - ESV, BLB, CSB
- shall be preached - NASB, KJV
- Will and "shall" are not specifically in the Greek. It is the verb "kérussó" ([[G2784]]) to be a herald, proclaim {14}

- Based on the definition of "remain" I don't think Paul is saying anything about falling away from obedience to Jesus. I think it is just a word he used to mean the people who are still living at the time of Jesus' return {15, 17}
- Other translations for "encourage" ([[G3870]]) {18}

- The Greek word ([[G1127]]) for "remain awake" really means to keep watch {6}
- The Greek word ([[G3525]]) for "sober" includes being drunk on wine, but is also broader to include being free from illusion and the intoxicating influences of sin {6}
- It almost seems like Paul is merging "[[Faith]], [[Hope]] and [[Love]]" and the armor of God into one verse.
- Compare with [[1_Corinthians_13|1 Corinthians 13.13]], [[Ephesians_06|Ephesians 6.13-17]] and [[James_02|James 2.14-26]].
- The Helps Word-Studies for breastplate ([[G2382]]) says "**Ephesians 6.14** refers to "the breastplate of righteousness" (ton thōraka tēs dikaiosynēs) and **1 Thessalonians 5.8** to "the breastplate (G2382 /thṓraks) of faith."
- This indicates righteousness results from obeying the faith God births in the heart (this is confirmed in texts like **James 2.14-26**)"
- 2019.12.10
- Paul said the "Day of the Lord" will come like a thief in the night. All the usual translations say essentially the same thing {2}
- The Helps Word Study says about thief "a thief who steals by stealth (in secret), rather than in the open with violence" {2}
- I think Paul is saying that when we least expect it, the Day of the Lord will come. {1-3}
- One of the "signs" that the Day of the Lord is near is people saying "peace and security" {3}
- Paul gives an example of a pregnant woman and her labor pains. Obviously, she knows it is coming soon, she just doesn't know exactly the day and hour. {3}
- Unlike the definition of a thief, Paul says the day will come with destruction {3}
- Next, Paul compares Christians and non-Christians {4-8}
- Christians
- Not in the darkness so that this day will overtake us like the thief
- Sons of the light and sons of the day
- Don't belong to the night or to the darkness
- Paul then gives some exhortation. He says, "Let us ...
- Not sleep
- Remain awake and sober
- Be sober
- Putting on the breastplate of faith and love
- Putting on the helmet of our hope of salvation
- Non-Christians
- Those who sleep, sleep at night
- Those who get drunk, get drunk at night
- Paul continues his exhortation to the Christians
- God didn't appoint us to suffer wrath
- But rather to obtain salvation through Jesus
- He died so whether we are awake or sleep, we may live together with Him
- Therefore, encourage and build one another up
- I'm not sure I fully understand Paul's use of awake and sleep. It seems that in **verses 6-7** he is using awake to refer to being alert to Jesus' return. Then in **verse 10**, I think he is using"awake" to refer to physically alive and "sleep" to talk about being physically dead.

- When talking about the "day of the Lord", Paul said a couple of interesting things: {1-3}
- He started off by saying, "Now about the times and seasons".
- I am curious about a couple of things
- why did he mention both times and seasons?
- what does "seasons" have to do with the end times?
- He said there was no need write to them "for" they were fully awary that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. Yet, he devoted a few paragraphs to the subject
- All the usual translations say "times" ([[G5550]]) except NLT which says "how"

- Jesus told the church in Sardis “wake up and strengthen what remains”
- Then Jesus warned them that if they didn’t wake up, He will come like a thief
- **Revelation 3.3** seems similar to other warnings about Jesus coming back such as [[Luke_12|Luke 12.35-40]].

- Notes
- Although it is clear that Jesus wants us to be alert to His return, I struggle with the idea that we need to be physically [[Awake|awake]] and [[To_Clothe|dressed]] 24/7/365. That would seem to go against [[Psalm_127|Psalm 127.2]] and others.
- I am guessing that the alertness and [[Clothing_Textile_Items|clothing]] are figurative, but I need more study.
