# Accountability Bible Study
---
## Background
- I am trying a new / old approach to my Bible Study
- Now that I am using Obsidian, I am going to keep each study small and narrowly focused.
- Then, I will have other studies that will compare / contrast / etc the smaller ones to form a theological viewpoint
- So, the Accountability study will get completely restarted here in the new format.
- However, any notes from previous studies will keep their original dates. For example, I will start this one by pulling as much info from the [[Accountability - Submit Role in Obedience Bible Study.odt]]. Once all of the info has been extracted into various other studies, the odt file will be deleted.
- BTW, this study has been "refocused" numerous times

## Questions
- [[Accountability|Accountable]] to God
- Examples of how we are accountable to God
- What does it mean to be accountable to God?
- What is the role of the [[Holy Spirit]] in accountability? See [[Acts_05|Acts 5]].
- Scripture says we are accountable to God. Need to list verses. Also, what does that mean?
- Accountable to [[Man]]
- Are we just “accountable” to God, or also each other?
- Commands / examples of how we should or should not be accountable to man.
- Examples of where accountability to man is modeled and the outcome.
- Are there any other examples of the negative side of fearing man other than the Proverbs passage?
- Are there examples to follow of being accountable to man
- What about OT examples of God commanding the Israelites to hold people accountable to His laws? In some cases, the penalty was death by stoning.
- Accountability groups
- Where are "accountability groups" commanded or modeled in scripture?
- Other
- If [[Jesus]] modeled accountability, how did He do it?
- In the absence of a clear command from God, where do “traditions” fit into “accountability”?
- Accountability as it relates to other subjects
- What if anything is the connection between [[Exhort|exhortation]] and “holding someone accountable”?
- How is [[Exhort|exhortation]] related to accountability groups
- What does the Bible say about “holding others accountable” for “[[Obey|obedience]]”?
- How does “[[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_NOTES/2022/2022.12.06.1023_Submit_Bible_Study|submit]]” fit into all this? Is there a caveat for “conscience”
- Are there any “[[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_NOTES/2022/2022.12.06.1004_One-Anothers Bible Study|one-anothers]]” that apply to this study?

## TODO
- Copy stuff from [[Obedience Takeaway Summary.odt]]
- DONE!
- I am keeping this there until I get the notes copied to each of the other studies. Then I will delete that note.
- Look up “account” in Lumina with “relevance / exact” selected
- Status: start on page 6
- Add a reference to [[Accountability_References_J-121113]] in each of the passages below
---
## TL;DR
- We are now released from the law and are to live by the Spirit {[[Romans_07|Romans 7.6]]}
- Jesus makes it clear that [[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_NOTES/2022/2022.12.06.1002_Obey Bible Study|obedience]] from the heart is what counts. If we are more worried about what our “A-Team” thinks than what God thinks, then our hearts are not in the right place {[[Matthew_15|Matthew 15.7-9]], [[Mark_07|Mark 7.6]]}
- Praise / fear of man vs. praise / fear of God
- Fear of man has its consequences [[1_Samuel_13|1 Samuel 13.5-14]]
- Fear of man is a snare [[Proverbs_29|Proverbs 29.25]]
- Jesus said we are to fear God, not man. ([[Matthew_10|Matthew 10.28]] & [[Luke_12|Luke 12.4-5]])
- I am tempted by the desire for the praise of men [[John_12|John 12.43]]
- Paul makes it clear we are to seek God’s approval, not man’s if we want to be Jesus’ servant. {[[Galatians_01|Galatians 1.10]]}
- Hebrews has a strong command to obey our leaders {[[Hebrews_13|Hebrews 13.17]]}
- Verses on submit. What is submission’s role in obedience? After looking at all 38 occurrences of ([[G5293]]), I really don’t see any connection between “[[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_NOTES/2022/2022.12.06.1023_Submit_Bible_Study|submit]]” and “accountability”.
- For the most part in the OT, it was the people of Israel who exacted the punishment for failing to keep God’s commands. However, there are more than a few examples of where God took care of it Himself. {[[Leviticus_20|Leviticus 20.8-9]], [[Acts_05|Acts 5.1-10]]}
- Accountable to God (There will be no pleading the fifth!)
- The Holy Spirit established Himself as the one to which we are accountable. Lying to the Holy Spirit can result in physical death. {[[Acts_05|Acts 5.3-5 & 10]]}
- The whole world is held accountable to God {[[Romans_03|Romans 3.19-20]]}
- Each of us will give an account of himself to God. {[[Romans_14|Romans 14.10 & 12]]}
- Men will give an account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. {[[Matthew_12|Matthew 12.36]]}
- We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due {[[2_Corinthians_05|2 Corinthians 5.10]]}
- We will have to give an account to Him {[[1_Peter_04|1 Peter 4.7]]}
- ??Matthew 16.27
- ??Matthew 25.32
- ??Romans 2.16
- ??Ecclesiastes 12.14
- ??1 Corinthians 4.5??
- When we do the accountability thing, we put ourselves between the disciple and Jesus and make it about us. Instead, we should be training the disciple to be accountable to Jesus and Him alone. See my journal entry: [[Accountability_J-160203|J-2016.02.03]]
- Some of the accountability models do in fact tempt me and could tempt others to justify themselves before men instead of before God. {[[Matthew_06|Matthew 6.1, 2, 5 & 16]], [[Luke_16|Luke 16.15]]}
- If we love Jesus, we will keep His commandments {[[John_14|John 14.15-24]]}
- According to dictionaries: Accountability / Accountable implies some sort of consequence for failing to meet the applicable standard. The lack of a consequence is a waste of time for both sides.
- According to the Bible, accountable means to give an account. This could include simply telling a story about what happened.

- Biblical “death” is separation from God. (If we view Biblical “death” as separation from God, this passage makes more sense. Satan lied to Eve in **Genesis 3.4** about the definition of death.) {4}
- God “assessed” Adam and Eve’s actions {11}

### Ecclesiastes 4
- 2018.08.04
- This passage is the closest to the NPL version of A-Team (Accountability Team) [9-12]
- On one hand, I don’t see any mention of “holding” the other team member “accountable” [9-12]
- On the other hand, it would be difficult to coordinate a defense without some sort of communication. [12]
- I’d like to compare the A-Team approach or the “Loving Accountability” approach with the crew concept in the A-6. [9-12]
- The A-Team / “Loving Accountability” approach feels hierarchical
- Whereas the crew concept / battle-buddy feels more distributed, peer-to-peer
- 2015.02.24
- There are advantages to working in teams of 2 or 3 even if the reward must be split [9-12]

[[Matthew_06|Matthew 6]]
- 2018.01.17 & 2018.01.18
- The context of the **Matthew 6** passage is giving to the needy.
- I think most people would assume the “needy” are the type of people discussed in [[Matthew_25|Matthew 25.31-46]].
- I guess the case could be made that non-Christians need Jesus. Therefore sharing the [[Gospel]] with them would be included in this warning. If that is the case, then all the “accountability” schemes related to gospel shares are in violation of this passage.
- However, I think it would be a huge stretch and taking the verse out of context. Especially considering the Greek.
- Sharing the gospel is about God, not about the needy. See [Evangelism / Testify / Witness / Declare Bible Study](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1u7CYW1zGpfvFPvJPIpn1gVdHTwiP2IXc2CjxXAxvs2k/edit#heading=h.8n3rcmctafh3).
- Jesus warned about doing our [[Righteousness]] before men to get [[Praise]] from them. {1}
- Doing so eliminates our [[Reward]] from our Father {1, 2, 5, 16}
- Accountability tempts me to seek reward from men.
- Perform {1} = [[G4160]]
- Righteous {1} = [[G1343]]
- Men {1, 2}= [[G0444]]
- Needy {2, 3} = [[G1654]]
- To be praised {2}= [[G1392]]
- Give {3} = Not exactly in the Greek. Translated from [[G4160]] + [[G1654]] (doing charity)
- Giving {4} = [[G1654]]
- [[G1654]] is a noun. The NASB translated it, alms (7), charity (3), giving (1). It doesn’t refer to a needy person, but the gift that is given.
- Secret {4-x2, 6, 18} = [[G2927]]

- We should be “accountable” to God, not man.

- There is nothing here that implies we have to give an account to man
- 2015.10.26
- We will have to account for our words to Jesus at the [[Judgment|judgment]]. {36}
- 2017.07.31
- Not only will we be judged, but we will be acquitted or condemned by our words. Clearly, there is a “consequence” for our actions. However, in this passage, Jesus doesn’t specify what happens if we are “condemned”. {37}

- [[Mark_05|Mark 5]]
- 2017.08.02 {14-16}
- Although the BSB translated "apēngeilan" ([[G0518]]) into "described" it can also mean "report" which has a similar connotation as "accountability" which is a different Greek word. Mark wrote that after the pig herders "reported" ([[G0518]]) to the towns people, they then "described" ([[G1334]]) what happened.
- An interesting observation:
- Some people use [[G1334]] to justify their position that we need to hold our disciples accountable.
- In my opinion, it would make more sense to use ([[G0518]]) instead of ([[G1334]]) to justify "accountability"
- Another observation: Based on the story, it would seem that no one is holding the pig herders accountable.

- [[Mark_06|Mark 6]]
- 2023.02.27
- In verses 7-12, Jesus sent out the 12 on their first mission trip {7-12}
- When they returned (after the beheading of John), they "gathered around Jesus and brought Him news ([[G0518]]) of all they had done and taught". {30}
- There is no indication from scripture:
- that Jesus gathered any "numbers" or "statistics" from their efforts
- that Jesus did any sort of "accountability" with the Apostles
- The only thing recorded was Jesus' concern about rest {31}

- Some people use [[G1334]] to justify their position that we need to hold our disciples accountable. See more thoughts at [[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_NOTES/2017.08.02.1359_Accountability]]

- 2018.04.16 {15-24}
- There is an “interdependence” between loving Jesus and obeying His commands
- 2017.04.01
- Some thoughts from Life of Messiah:
- Verse 15 is not a “[[Command]]” it is a “statement of fact”
- We don’t keep His commands to “demonstrate” our [[Love]] for Him, our keeping is the “natural expression of our love”
- As a result of our belief we will have [[Eternal_Life|eternal life,]] and as a result of having eternal life we will have love. And as a result of having love we will keep His commandments.
- And what does it mean to keep His commandments?
- Again the Greek word translated keep is richer in meaning than the English word. It is τηρέω tēréō; from the noun tērós, a warden or guard. It means to keep an eye on, to watch or observe attentively, and hence to guard, keep, obey.
- So the second thing making it possible for them to accomplish His work is the fact that their keeping His commandments will arise of itself out of their love for Him
- My notes:
- This is a clear command to obey Jesus [15]
- Jesus obeyed the Father because Jesus loves the Father [30-31]
- From my Journal, [[y_STUFF_TO_PROCESS/NOTES_TO_PROCESS/MORE_NOTES/2017.04.01.1702]]
- Jesus said that if we love Him, we will keep His commands.
- What would it look like to [[Obey]] Jesus’ commands out of love for Him?
- I really don’t know what that looks like or how to explain it much less “train” someone to obey as a “natural expression of our love”.
- Some people in [[NPL]] are insistent on setting goals and “holding people accountable” to those goals. That approach focuses on man-made fear. I don’t see any connection to expressing our love toward Jesus through that “method”. Although I don’t know what the proper way looks like, I am pretty sure the NPL method is not right.

- The NET says "[[Fellowship]] in this verse refers to close association involving mutual involvement and [[Relationship|relationships]].
- I agree this passage is a great example of the epitome of what fellowship could look like.
- However, I don't see anything here that supports "[[Accountability_Group|accountability group]]" where one person holds another "[[Accountability|accountable]]" for [[Obey|obedience]].

- The word “accountable” isn’t in this passage.
- However, it could be argued that “accountable to” could be substituted for “obey” in this passage without changing the meaning too much which leads credence to the connection between accountability and obedience. (At least in the BSB translation) {29, 32}
- 2017.07.31 {3-5 & 10}
- Although the passage didn’t use any form of “accountability” it sure seems that the Holy Spirit (God) assessed their heart / actions, called them to account and dealt a severe consequence.

- It is possible that some people will try to use this passage to justify “accountability”
- The closest reference to accountability is to the Holy Spirit in verse 28.
- Paul doesn’t mention that the elders are accountable to him nor does the command the elders to “hold the parishioners accountable”
- Otherwise, this passage is all about admonishing / exhorting, encouraging the elders to do their job
