# Be Ready - Sunday, 2026.01.11
## tl;dr
- Those of us who believe in Jesus have eternal life {36}
- Those who reject Jesus can never escape the Father's wrath {36}
- The Father gives the Spirit without limit {34}
## Context
### Book {John}
- The 43rd book in the Bible
- The fourth gospel in the NT, but not a synoptic version like the other three
### Chapter {John 3}
- Jesus and Nicodemus {1 - 21}
- John’s Testimony about Jesus {22 - 36}
## Observations
- This note focuses on verses 22-36
- The last half of the section is a quote from John the Baptist talking about Jesus
- There are five occurrences of "God" in the BSB version of John's speech. However, there are only four occurrences of [[G2316]]. The BSB chose to substitute "God" for the subject in the last phrase the verse 34. The germane verses:
- Whoever accepts His testimony has certified that **God** is truthful. {33}
- For the One whom **God** has sent speaks the words of **God**, for **God** gives the Spirit without limit. {34}
- Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of **God** remains on him. {36}
## Questions
- To which entity of the Trinity does each occurrence of God refer?
## Interpretations
{33}
- "God" refers to the Father
- Based on the context of the whole paragraph, the pronoun "His" refers to Jesus
- It makes the most sense that "God" refers to The Father
- Certify that God is truthful
- Unrelated to this study, but nevertheless very noteworthy is a statement about those of us who accept Jesus' testimony about what He has seen and heard:
- "has certified that God is truthful"
- Various translations of "certified"
- certified (NIV, BSB, NASB, MSB)
- affirm / has affirmed (NLT, CSB)
- sets his seal / sealed (ESV, BLB, KJB, LSB, WEB, LSV)
- has confirmed (NET)
- [[777]] - Lord, I am still not sure what this verse means. Please explain it to me
{34}
- The two actual occurrences of G2316 refer to The Father
- The pronoun used as the subject in the last phrase is more challenging. About half of the various other translations I use chose to use "God" as the subject and the other half chose to use the pronoun "He."
- God (NIV, NLT, BSB, KJB, NSB, WEB, LSV)
- He (ESV, BLB, NASB, LSB, CSB, NET)
- Based on the rest of the section and paragraph, I will assume the subject refers to The Father regardless of the translation
{35}
- God refers to The Father
- I suspect that this verse is one of them that fuels the debate about what happens to us when we die
- For those of us who believe in Jesus, we get eternal life; but what exactly is eternal life?
- [[777]] - Lord, please clarify what "eternal life" means
- On the other hand, it seems clear that those who reject Jesus can never escape the Father's wrath
## Application
- Finish adding the references to all 1327 occurrences of Strong's [[G2316]] in the [[God_G2316_Summary]]
## Correction
As always, I am open to scripture-based correction.
