- There are two timestamps associated with this study. Since I don't recall the history and why the second exists. I am using the earliest ts, but both of them are shown below:

- This is a collection of my notes on the book of 1 Peter.

## General Notes
- Context
- In **1 Peter 1.1**, Peter addresses his letter to the diasporas (G1290) throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. The BSB note about this says, "Literally To the sojourners of the Diaspora. Originally referring to the Jewish people living outside the land of Israel, the Diaspora is applied here to the believers scattered abroad." And about "Asia", the BSB notes says, "That is, the Roman Province of Asia" [1 Peter 1.1]
- In **1 Peter 5.1-2**, Peter addresses the “elders”. It seems reasonable to think that he is talking to church elders. If this is the case, the letter does apply to Christians [1-2]
- As Peter is wrapping up his letter he addresses "young men" in verse 5.
- I mention all this because I am not 100% confident that all this applies to all Christians. On the other hand, I do believe that there are good principles that do apply to everyone. For example: (8-9)
- Peter tells us that we have an "adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."
- He goes on to say that we should "Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering."
## Specific Notes
- I noticed that the suffering(s) in verse 1 & 9 is (G3804) and the "have suffered" in verse 10 is (G3958). [1, 9-10]
- (G3804)--that which befalls one, a suffering, a passion; (a) suffering, affliction, (b) passion, emotion, (c) an undergoing, an enduring; turns out, this word is derived from (G3958)
- (G3958)--to suffer, to be acted on; I am acted upon in a certain way, either good or bad; I experience ill treatment, suffer.
- With all the discussion about suffering, Peter encourages (G3870) us in **verses 10 & 12** saying:
- "And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore you, secure you, strengthen you, and establish you." [10]
- I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. [12]
- The promise Peter encouraged us with is that the "God of all grace" will: [10]
- Restore--(G2675)--to complete, prepare; (a) I fit (join) together; met: I compact together, (b) act. and mid: I prepare, perfect, for his (its) full destination or use, bring into its proper condition (whether for the first time, or after a lapse).
- Secure--(G4741)--to make fast, establish; (a) I fix firmly, direct myself towards, (b) generally met: I buttress, prop, support; I strengthen, establish
- Strengthen--(G4599)--only occurrence; to strengthen
- Establish--(G2311)--to lay the foundation of
- Peter said to his readers that he testified to the true grace of God and they should stand firm in it. It seems reasonable that we should also stand firm in it too. [12]
- I noticed that there are two statements about standing firm.
- Peter said that the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. He then issued an imperative, "resist him, standing firm in your faith … " [9]
- As Peter is wrapping up his letter, he says that he has "written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it." [12]
- Word Analysis
- In **verse 9**
- “Stand” is NIG
- the literal translation for "standing firm" is "firm"; adjective--hard, firm (G4731) [9]
- On the other hand, in **verse 12**
- It is "you stand" (G2476); verb--to stand [12]
- Firm is NIG
- I think the message Peter is trying to convey is that we are to resist the devil and other attacks by standing firm in our faith in the grace of God [9, 12]
