[4] • Then the writer continues with a reminder of an exhortation from Proverbs 3.11-12: My son, do not take lightly the discipline of the Lord, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you. For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises every son He receives.” [5-6] • The literal words in verse 6 are rather harsh. The various translations for "chastises" are ◦ Chastens (NIV, ESV, BSB, NET) ◦ Punishes (NLT, CSB) ◦ Scourges (BLB, NASB, KJV, WEB) • He continues with an exhortation to "endure suffering as discipline" because God is treating me as a son. The logic he proposes is: ◦ What son isn't disciplined by his father [7] ◦ If I don't experience discipline like everyone else, then I am illegitimate and not a true son [8] ◦ Furthermore, we have all had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them. [9] ◦ Therefore, we should submit to the Father and live [9] • Finally, he wraps up this section with some motivation: ◦ Our fathers disciplined us for a short time as they thought best, but God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in His holiness. [10] ◦ No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a peaceful harvest of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. [11] • The closing paragraph is confusing in light of the "external" discipline from God. The writer tells us to ◦ Strengthen our limp hands and weak knees [12] ◦ Make straight paths for our feet [13] ◦ So that the lame may not be debilitated [13] ◦ But rather healed [13] Exhortation [5] = G3874 Discipline [5, 7-1st, 8, 11] = G3809 Disciplines [6, 7-2nd, 10-1st] = G3811 Endure [7] = G5278 Disciplined [9] = G3810 Respected [9] = G1788 Submit [9] = G5293 Disciplines [10-2nd] = Not in Greek Painful [11] = G3077 Peaceful [11] = G1516 Harvest [11] = G2590 Righteousness [11] = G1343 Trained [11] = G1128 Strengthen [12] = G0461 Healed [13] = G2390 --- ### 2 Peter 2 Date - G1128 (14) --- ### Revelation 3 Date - (19) --- ## Other Notes - --- #### Outbound Links - Bible - Topics - Words - Other
