# Study on Repentance ### Notes - There are three Greek words ([[G3338]], [[G3340]] & [[G3341]]) in the Bible that deal with repentance.  I'll give the definition below and some representative verses for each. --- #### Change of heart / Change of mind - Greek Word - [[G3338]] - μεταμελλομαι - met-am-el'-lom-ahee - Count:6 - it is a care to one afterwards 1a) it repents one, to repent one's self Synonym - Passages - [[Matthew_21|Matthew 21.29]] - See my notes: [[Matthew_21.28-32]] - The boy answered, ‘I will not.’ But later he had a _**change of heart**_ and went. - [[Matthew_21|Matthew 21.32]] - For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe.  Although you saw this, you did not later _**change your minds**_ and believe him. - [[Hebrews_07|Hebrews 7.21]] - but Jesus did so with a sworn affirmation by the one who said to him, “The Lord has sworn and _**will**_ not _**change his mind**_, ‘You are a priest forever’” --- #### Repent - Greek Word - [[G3340]] - μετανοεο - met-an-o-eh'-o - Count:34 - to change one's mind, i.e. to repent 2) to change one's mind for better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one's past sins - Passages - See my notes on [[1391880918_Kingdom_of_Heaven|Matthew 3.2]] - “_**Repent**_, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” - [[Luke_13|Luke 13.5]] - No, I tell you!  But unless _**you repent**_ you will all perish as well!” - [[Luke_16|Luke 16.3-4]] - **3** Watch yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him. If _**he repents**_, forgive him. **4** Even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times returns to you saying, ‘_**I repent**_,’ you must forgive him.” --- #### Repentance - Greek Word - [[G3341]] - μετανοια - met-an'-oy-ah - Count 24 - a change of mind, as it appears to one who repents, of a purpose he has formed or of something he has done - Passages - [[Matthew_03|Matthew 3.8]] - Therefore produce fruit that proves _**your repentance**_, - [[Luke_05|Luke 5.32]] - I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to _**repentance**_.” - [[2_Timothy_02|2 Timothy 2.24-26]] - **24** And the Lord’s slave must not engage in heated disputes but be kind toward all, an apt teacher, patient, **25** correcting opponents with gentleness.  Perhaps God will grant them _**repentance**_ and then knowledge of the truth **26** and they will come to their senses and escape the devil’s trap where they are held captive to do his will. - See also my notes at: [[2_Timothy_02]] --- [[777]] - Lord, what do I need to repent from?  What do I need to change my mind about?  Please help me to see it and please give me the courage and faith to make the change.
