# 10-Commandments Bible Study
## Background
- A while back, I wrote [[Thoughts_on_the_10_Commandments]]
- I recently did a lot of work on the [[Honor_Parents_Study]]. At the center of that study is the 5th commandment to honor your parents. With all that focus on the 5th, I felt I needed to do a whole study on all 10.
- This study also addresses the ToDo in the first note above
- This study will focus on the New Testament view of the 10-Cs
## Questions
- Do the 10-Commandments apply to non-Israelites?

## Chapter-by-Chapter Notes
### Exodus 20
#### 2026.04.16
- In verses 1-17 Moses wrote down the 10-Cs with more detail than is usually given on a poster, etc. all from the point of view of God {1-17}
- Here is a short list of the 10-Cs: {3-17}
- 1. Shall not have any other gods before Me {3}
- 2. Shall not make any idols nor worship them {4-6}
- 3. Shall not take Lord's name in vain {7}
- 4.Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. {8-11}
- 5.Honor your father and mother {12}
- 6.Shall not murder. {13}
- 7.Shall not commit adultery {14}
- 8. Shall not steal {15}
- 9.Shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. {16}
- 10. Shall not covet your neighbor's stuff {17}
- In verses 1-2, it almost seems like God is explaining / justifying Himself when He says:
> I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery."
- Regardless of God's motivation in saying verse 2, since He addressed these commandments to those He brought out of Egypt it would seem they apply to the Israelites.

### Deuteronomy 5
#### 2026.04.16 {6-21}
- It is my understanding that Deuteronomy is largely a recap of the previous books. Moses spoke all this as they were preparing to finally enter the promised land
- Consequently, verses 5-21 are almost the same as Exodus 20.3-17 and I won't repeat them here.

### Matthew 15
#### 2026.04.20 {8-9, 19}
- Jesus paraphrased Isaiah 29.13 as a part of His criticism of the Pharisees and scribes {8-9}
- “These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is but rules taught by men.
- Even though the 10-Cs ARE the word of God and NOT human tradition, perhaps my "objection" to them has to do with my sense that some people are "worshiping" the 10-Cs rather than God.
- [[777]] - Lord, please search me and know me and see what is in my heart and lead me in Your way everlasting {Psalm 139.23-24}
- As Jesus explained all this to His disciples, He said
- For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander. {19}
- He didn't link them directly to the 10-Cs. However, there is some mapping
- murder -> #6
- adultery -> #7
- sexual immorality -> #7
- theft -> #8
- false testimony -> #9
- slander -> #9
- It could be argued that the traditions of men map to idols #2
#### 20026.04.19 {4}
- Jesus used the 5th commandment (honor parents) to address the faulty emphasis on tradition over God's laws

### Matthew 19
#### Context {0}
- Teachings about Divorce {1-12}
- Jesus Blesses the Children {13-15}
- The Rich Young Man {16-30}
#### 2026.04.19 {19}
- Some thoughts on Jesus' response to the question, "what good thing must I do to obtain eternal life"
- Jesus listed off 4 of the 10 commandments
- He then added, "love your neighbor as yourself"
- I have heard it said that the interpersonal commandments can be summed up with the statement above. If that is true, then why did Jesus add it like it was an additional command to the other six?
#### 2026.04.16 {16-23}
- In the past I have attempted to bend the discussion about "good" into a commentary on whether Jesus is / is not God. I suppose it is possible that Jesus was making a cryptic statement about His deity.
- However, this evening I saw a totally different angle.
- Spoiler alert -- I think Jesus took the dude's statement as an opportunity to set him up to see his pride
- The Matthew version is different that the Mark 10.17-31 and Luke 18.18-30.
- In those versions, the rich dude addressed Jesus as "Good Teacher" and asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
- In the Matthew version: the rich dude addressed Jesus as teacher (leaving out the 'good' part)
- However, he asked, "what good thing must I do to obtain eternal life?"
- Jesus then listed off five of the 10-Cs all having to do with interpersonal relationships (none of the about our relationship with our Creator) {18-19}
- #6 - Don't murder
- #8 - Don't steal
- #9 - Don't bear false witness
- #5 - Honor father and mother
- Jesus also added, "love your neighbor as yourself"
- The dude then said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” Since I don't know the dude personally, I'll withhold any further judgement and rather speak about my relationship with God
- I know from many-many personal experiences with God that when I have made rash statements like that in the past, God has been quick, VERY quick to slap the pride out of me. This is not to imply my pride was gone forever. Au contraire, it returned as quick as a I was disciplined.
- But I digress!
- To clarify, I think Jesus was trying to show the dude that by declaring his innocence, he was making himself out to be god
